The hotel is located in the heart of Sasso Caveoso, Matera. There are eleven large rooms with independent access and all the modern technological comforts. They are partly built and partly caved out of the local tufa stone. They evoke the fascination of the prehistoric caves that you can see from the windows on the opposite Murgia plateau, site of the Archaelogical Park of Rupestrian Churches.

What an incredible place Sassi Di Matera is, and the Basiliani Hotel enriches the experience - our only regret is having just one night, I would recommend staying for two.

Right from the start, communication from the hotel was friendly and efficient - they gave clear instructions on where to find a carpark in the new part of Matera, and picked us up from there (cars are limited in old Matera).

The hotel is spread across various caves and has been restored skilfully and beautifully. The rooms have separate outdoor access. and have a modern stylish interior. Our room was huge, and the bathroom facilities were very cool including a separate glass shower at one end of the room! Breakfast was included in our reasonable room rate and it was plentiful and of a good quality.

The hotel is located perfectly to wander and explore Sasso Caveoso and Sasso Barisano – the atmosphere and sights are truly special, and it is definitely worth walking over to the gorge opposite. There are good restaurants near the hotel, we really enjoyed Dulcis In Fundo.

I thoroughly recommend this place – don’t just do a day trip, stay and savour!

We spent one night in another hotel in town and it was horrific. Even though we had pre-paid we decided to find another hotel. After a quick search we found this hotel and packed up our bags and walked over. The manager was extremely helpful and got us into a huge room right away (for less than we were paying at the other place). The rooms were modern and had everything we needed for our stay. Breakfast was also great. The views from the front patio are breathtaking and it is very quiet at night due to the location. The manager even drove us and our bags up to our car at the end of the stay. Highly recommend!

Well, where do we start. This hotel was fabulous, from the accommodation, staff / service and buffet breakfast.

The rooms are quite unique, part carved into the stone in Matera where people lived in caves until the 1950's. The rooms have their own entry / exit and they boast plenty of space and comfort. They can organise parking for you locally and will even meet you at the parking area to help with bags and lead you to the hotel.

The staff are excellent and very helpful. Special thanks to Onofrio, Roberto, Martina and Luchia for making our stay so very special. They were all so lovely to us as a family and particularly to our adult daughter who has learning disabilities.

Buffet breakfast is simply superb. Loads of choice and both tasty and healthy with loads of fruit.

Would we recommend this hotel.......yes, in a heartbeat. Well worth staying here as a base exploring Matera and surrounding areas. Matera is simply magical as a destination. Visit if you can. You will not be disappointed. It was even used as the backdrop to a Bond film.

We will return - the area is so very different to other areas of Italy we have visited.

I aim to provide an honest and respectful account of my experience, even though the behavior of Giuseppe? and Roberto? whom I believe are the hotel owner and the receptionist, fell far short of professional standards.

Summary:
If you’re seeking a hotel in southern Italy with unprofessional staff who fail to meet basic hospitality standards, this might be the place for you. However, if you value accountability, respectful service, and reliable communication, I strongly recommend staying elsewhere.

Details:
As someone who stays in over 30 hotels annually, this was, without question, the worst experience I’ve had. Despite booking a superior room through Booking.com, we discovered on the last night that we had been placed in a lower-category room. This appeared to be due to a clerical error, as the staff failed to properly manage room assignments in a hotel with only 20 rooms.

When we raised the issue, both Giuseppe and Roberto admitted their mistake but offered no solution, including a refund for the price difference or even a simple apology.

On the day of departure, the situation worsened. The staff unexpectedly refused to provide the shuttle service we had confirmed in writing, forcing us to carry our luggage (me, my wife, and my daughter) to the square to find a taxi. While waiting for the taxi, Giuseppe displayed unprofessional behavior, including using inappropriate language toward me. What was especially troubling was his attempt to approach my wife in an unsettling manner, which he abandoned when I intervened. This behavior was completely unacceptable and left us feeling uncomfortable and disrespected.

Conclusion:
If you’re willing to tolerate unprofessionalism, inadequate service, and inappropriate behavior, this hotel may suit you. For anyone else, I strongly recommend considering alternative accommodations.

Widespread hotel with excellent features for both hospitality and assistance. Well-furnished rooms housed "in the stones" surround an evocative setting. The shuttle service is excellent given that the hotel is located in the historic part of the ancient village...

We contact this hotel in order to stay for few days in Matera, and we don’t regret.
First impression through emails was really good. We were a group of 11 motorcyclists and travelling to Matera. They explain to us that the “Sasi area” is not accessible by cars or motors, and they suggested and offered us free shuttle service to the parking, this was a very good touch for us.
The hotel is a really GEM. Big spacious and clean room, with great location and excellent view.
Breakfast really good, and most important very nice and polite staff!
Definitely we will be back one day!

We were very well received in this establishment which offers a breathtaking view of the historic park opposite. We had requested two beds and we were accommodated in a huge room, very clean, very comfortable with air conditioning, mini bar, coffee corner. Delicious breakfast with very kind staff and this is the point that deserves the highest rating. Little extra transfer included from the parking lot and very accommodating with our schedules. I recommend ++++. Very happy to have spent three nights there.

Very special hotel. A few rooms in the vaults of Matera. The rooms are large and beautifully furnished. It is a special experience to stay here - you just have to do it - even if it smells a bit musty because of the humidity. But that doesn't bother you (and no, there was no mold). The owners are very friendly and helpful. The shuttle service from the parking lot to the hotel worked perfectly (just call before you arrive and they will pick you up). Nice breakfast buffet. Small terrace with a view. We can only recommend the hotel.

Magical location in a magical city. Spectacular view from our room across the valley to the cave-filled hillside. It was quiet at night even though close to several tourist attractions. The room, built into an existing cave, was very comfortable and attractive. The staff were very helpful, especially Roberto who gave us excellent ideas for how to explore the city.

You can’t park anywhere in the old city of Matera, but the hotel picked us up at the parking garage - just a 5 or 10 minute wait.

Superb hotel in a great location with a breathtaking view. Rooms carved into the stone, modern and perfectly comfortable
The welcome, particularly by Giuseppe (with whom we were able to communicate in advance by WhatsApp) was exceptional. He gave us (in French, best of all) explanations about the city and pointed out excellent restaurants (he even took us there himself by shuttle) a big thank you to him for this exceptional welcome. There were 7 of us and we were all enthusiastic about our stay.

Super hotel. They give you directions to a square near the hotel, 200m, where parking is free. You phone them and they pick you up, taking your luggage to the room. Very easy.
