Just to make clear- we have not stayed at this residency. The review is only for the terrace. It’s the most beautiful picturesque terrace with breathtaking view and such wonderful statues by Margherita Grasselli- you really need to stop by here!!! It was my favorite place in Matera during our visit. The entrance is right from the street, there is no fee or private entrance. Anybody can see it at any time. Artworks are fantastic and the view on Matera is stunning! We took fabulous pictures here (check my photos). Also, we were pleasantly surprised to find out that the artist is from Perugia, like my husband. Great work!!!

Great location just in the heart of the ancient town called "Sasso Barisano", few steps away from nice restaurants and main touristic attractions. Our room, partially carved from the rock, was comfortable and fully equipped. The hotel manager Francesca and and her assistant Cesare are kind and friendly. Surely a good choice !

We stayed here for 3 nights. It is good value for money. Very clean spacious rooms in a very central location with lots of really good restaurants a very short walk away. The staff were really helpful and provided a good continental breakfast. You actually stay in a cave, which is very peaceful and novel. I would highly recommend this as a place to stay at a reasonable cost.

We spent 2 nights at this hotel in late June, and to be honest chose it only because others were already full when we were making our bookings for our holiday (in January ... a forewarning to book early for Matera!) While this hotel is in a wonderful position to explore this amazing town, this 'hotel' let itself down in so many ways, that could so easily be fixed! We agree with other comments about the parking - the receptionist was less than helpful. The hotel is not easy to find, and once found and you have climbed all those stairs with your luggage the last thing you want to hear is that the secure parking is more than a kilometre away - and no offer of any help with transport etc (which we would happily have paid for!) We knew parking was going to be an issue, but in our correspondence with the hotel prior to our arrival they had made it very clear that parking was available 10 minutes from the hotel. We ended up parking on the street just above the sassi - not secure, but fine (but quite a walk up!!) The room itself, in a cave, was very large - but for the price very basic. And it's the little things that count - we had to ask for a pillow case for one of the pillows, the towels were clean but still a little damp, the breakfast was poor (one morning the croissants were stale, obviously left overs from the day before.) Wifi virtually non-existent, and only available in courtyard, directly outside office area. (We were told this was because of the thick walls of the hotel, yet we could get the signal from other nearby hotels, but not from ours!) And as we checked out we realised that the gentleman we had seen a few times standing in the courtyard was actually the owner, and it was his son in the office. Yet at no time was there any welcome, 'good day', or hospitality shown. And we speak some Italian too! Such a shame - with just a little bit more effort from the owners this really could be a lovely little hotel.

Nice apartment in the heart of Matera in a typical sasso (which is a cave used as accommodation in ancient times). Location was beautiful and from the hotel is a short walk to all interest points and some nice typical restaurants. The only downside is the parking, which is 10 mins walking from the place but it's common to all hotels there...at lest we were allowed to unload the car in front of the reception before going to the parking.

Perfect place if you want to taste the flavour of the old caves! Location is great to visit Matera's Sassi but be ready to fight with mosquitos.. We had quite a few in the room and no A/C, just a fan.
Breakfast was good and staff very kind.

We stayed here for 3 nights in the luxury cave suite and it was amazing. We could easily have stayed longer. The location is set in the middle of the stunning Sassi, steeped in rich history and very Romantic. The staff were extremely helpful and provided us with a map of the area and pointed out routes to explore, viewpoints that were truly breathtaking and lovely places to eat. It was an amazing experience and we cannot wait to return.

Matera is well worth visiting. We recommend arranging a guide to learn more about this quite different area. Location is great for exploring the sassi. Staying in a cave is maybe a one time experience for most but worth it. The room was very nice, clean and well appointed. Wi-fi worked well in the room (others have complained but we did not experience any issue) and breakfast is next door and was buffet style Italian probably best described as ok. Parking is not allowed near the B&B so drop off bags and then the staff (who speak English well) will show parking options but you are on your own to get there. A good time to have a GPS that works. Staying in the sassi is worth it but there may be cheaper options.

We really enjoyed our stay in this hotel. The room was great with a large kitchen / eating area, bath and a very nice bedroom with a balcony with a view of the north side of Matera. There was also an excellent common use balcony with a similar view.

The access to most hotels situated in this part of old Matera is a little tricky, parking is not allowed and access is only available from 1 PM - 5 PM. You have to get parking outside the controlled are and walk or take a cab back to the hotels. Walking back would in most cases be 15 - 30 min depending on parking and hotel locations.

However, with that in mind, I would still recommend a stay in "Old" Matera as a must.
Once we got settled it was fantastic. Close to most of the sites to visit and close to some great restaurants.

Our hotel host was very friendly and helpful, made our brief stay even more enjoyable. He arranged dinner reservations at a location he recommended and the owner of the restaurant played the piano for a brief period during our dinner, very memorable.

Matera is a curious place. It is an interesting experience to sleep in a cave, albeit a slightly damp and dusty one.
We arrived after lunch and were told (in perfectly good English) to go away until the English speaker arrived at 3.30 (she works for two hours & then leaves again). When she arrived she told us - politely- that we had to remove our car from the UNESCO area, look for a park about 2km away & come back. She graciously said we could bring our bags up the (100) stairs before doing so. After we expressed incredulity at this, she said we could hire a company to come and take the car away. In addition to the cost of E20, this involved handing the rental car over to an unauthorised driver.
None of this aggravation need have occurred if the proprietor had a less contemptuous attitude to her clients.
