Following the historical street numbers of the Rione Pianelle from which the scattered hotel takes its name, the guestrooms of the Pianelle resort develop on three levels and all have independent entrances. Faithful to the memory of places, design is sober and minimal, in symbiosis with suggestion of interiors, partly built and partly carved into the tufa stone. References of functionalism are not lacking as the Lampe de Marseille designed by Le Corbusier in 1949, which, with its two reflectors orienting light beam in opposite direction, creates special chiaroscuro effects. Essentiality and sustainability blend in with furnishing strictly made by companies involved in the EU’s “Legal Wood” project for the sustainable world’s forests management. Beauty, style and harmony with nature are perfectly integrated within the Pianelle resort, offering guests unique and unforgettable experiences. Suite Subdivo | Ipogea Deluxe Subdivo | Ipogea Comfort Single Why Pianelle Resort What yesterday was know as Chianella, the ancient toponym of the medieval district where many trades extramoenia- outside the high walls of the Civita- took place, today is named Rione Pianelle, landing place for travelers discovering the outstanding universal value of the Sassi and the Park of the Rupestrian Churches of Matera, World Heritage Site. Here, among vicinati- courtyards- voices, rocks and memories from the past, takes shape the Pianelle Resort scattered hotel, the tribute by Donato Iacovone to his family and hometown: Matera. Everything is recovery and everything is recovered, an ancient wisdom that is renewed today as in the past. Sacrifice becomes project and contemporaneity. The result is a fil rouge linking seventeen unique places where living is a challenge and a conquest. Perspectives on internal landscape. The Suites ipogee, carved into the rock, 62 and 65, are privileged places where you can observe the other landscape, the internal one. The presence of fire, the large hearth-red-stone and the archaic calcarenitic walls, take you back to ancient times. A point of view on the past and on the rupestrian culture. Water, essences and light variations, invite to psychophysical balance and well-being suspended in time. Perspectives on external landscape. The Suite sub divo coelo, in the ancient meaning built under the shining sky, 38 and 68, are privileged places where you can observe the external landscape. The Suites sub divo are perfect for you that do not want to miss a minute of the stay in Matera. Impactful are the enchanting views on the Church of San Pietro Caveoso and the rocky spur of the Madonna dell’ Idris where architecture and nature come together. Colours, fragrances and relax are all enclosed in our Suites: aromatherapy, colour-therapy, nebulized and waterfall jets, underline the style. The Deluxe ipogee, carved into the rock, offer an intimate experience of hospitality with elegance, warm and welcoming ambiences in which your individual needs are met. Each one 49-50-51, is unique and has a special feature. The ancient canals and cisterns for collecting waters, with their monumental nature, become the key elements in all our rooms. The Deluxe sub divo coelo, in the ancient meaning built under the shining sky, offer impressive perspectives of surrounding landscape infusing unique and unforgettable sensations: the room 54 bright and airy with an amazing view on San Pietro Caveoso Square, the seventeenth- century room 41 rich in sculptural elements and developed on two staggered levels, the room 43 where the incredible view overlooking the Park of Rupestrian Churches and windows frame the murgia landscape as in the Henri Cartier-Bresson’s b/w photos, taken in 1950’s. The Comfort rooms are perfect for you want to be comfortable in the heart of the Sassi within walking distance from the stunning historic Piazza San Pietro Caveoso. Intimate and cradling rooms, each one unveils its own proper character with refined details in line with the traditional Sassi architectural style: from the wooden ceiling of room 42, the pavilion vault of room 40, to the round-arched vaults of rooms 48, 55 and 56.

Superb Inn located on San Pietro Caveoso Square. Brand new structure with very design rooms in a stone and cave environment typical of the Matera sassi. Rather in the lower sassi and easily accessible by car but you will have to climb rather than descend for visits. The host is in the Matera ZTL so not accessible except fine to rental cars. The Pension arranges shuttles from a covered and guarded (and paid 😉) car park in the non-ZTL part of the city. Many restaurants nearby. Professional and adorable staff. Perfect to discover this wonderful city of Matera... A little flat on the air conditioning which is very modern with Bluetooth system but which sometimes goes out (often) too understand why...

Hospitality of the highest professional value and at the same time empathetic welcome. The staff is very attentive to any need to make guests feel completely at ease and make them feel at home.
We stayed in room 41, a beautiful and comfortable room where the ancient structure meets the most modern technologies. Particularly in the bathroom where the immense hydromassage shower with aromatherapy makes the stay particularly fascinating.
Top breakfast with a wide choice of genuine products.
Perfect cleanliness, nothing left to chance. We are also very attentive to the needs of our Maltese.
The location of the resort, in front of Piazza San Pietro Caveoso, is enchanting in terms of landscape and truly strategic, with the most beautiful places close at hand.
A truly unforgettable experience.

Suite number 38, splendid. Extraordinary bathroom, dug into the rock with double sink, double shower, beautiful lights, aromatherapy Large room with beautiful exterior view, enjoyable if you feel oppressed in a troglodyte room, free minibar, espresso machine.
Very refined and perfect place to visit this magnificent city.
You can park in a public car park outside (underground parking is cheaper than above ground, €0.5 per hour). A small bus takes you to the terminus located a few meters from the hotel. It is also possible to take private parking with the hotel shuttle service, higher price.
At least 2 nights are necessary in my opinion to enjoy this magnificent hotel and the magical atmosphere of Matera, especially at night.

Most exclusive italian design at its best. You cannot imagine a more succeeded renovation conserving the ambiance of the caves with the most ultra luxury modern design making the resort THE pristine luxury destination in Matera.
Everything is high class from the organisation of welcome before your arrival with the shuttle service from the central parking to the welcome at the property by Cristian to the stay itself. The staff makes everything possible to make your stay the most special experience.

Matera is a unique place that we hope will manage to conserve its uniqueness and cultivated way of tourisme and this despite all the visitors emerging every day.

What an incredibly wonderful surprise of a hotel in a beautiful town where there were so many from which choose. In doing my research from home, other reviews along with the photos of this property helped me with my decision, and we couldn't have been happier. Everything about this place was superb...from the location to the design and cleanliness as well as the amazing staff and owners. The rooms are bright and well designed with a minimalistic wonderful designer look to them and they were immaculate. The bed and pillows were incredibly comfortable with the highest quality of sheets. We loved being in room 54 with plenty of space and our own private terrace where we enjoyed our morning tea. The breakfasts were delicious and bountiful. An added plus was the public terrace they have on the top of their building where you can enjoy cocktails and an incredible view. The staff couldn't have been any more welcoming and delightful with a very special "thank you" to Ediola in reception who is an exceptional professional with superior customer service skills. We are so very grateful to her and to the wonderful owners who really know how to take care of their guests. I can't say enough about this property as it truly was one of the highlights of our 17 day trip through southern Italy. It was hard saying "goodbye" to Matera and to this gem of a hotel and the wonderful people who operate it. After touring Matera and learning all about the Sassis, we had a real appreciation for what it took to convert this property into the first class stunning hotel it is. Thank you, Ediola and the wonderful owners, for all you did to make our visit so memorable!

Dear Guests, we just say "thank you" is not enough and does not make merit to your beautiful words in describing the Pianelle Resort of Matera. What we read with you made the owners very happy, all the staff and in particular our Ediola. In the world of Tourism, the task and duty of those who "welcome" is precisely to be attentive to every detail, not to wait for our guests to make a wish but to think and offer it before they ask. Among the wishes of the Guest there is the welcome, accessibility and cleanliness of the property, the quality of services and rooms, the professionalism of the staff, combined with the friendliness of the Iacovone Family, owner of the Resort, manages to instill the pleasure of an ideal stay in Matera. Today, in thank you sincerely, we hope to see you again and soon in Matera and of course at the Pianelle Resort!

Good hotel, renovated, comfortable, but I don’t give it 5 stars because when they gave me the check, i noticed that they charged me extra for the 2 towels I asked for everyday and they charged me extra for a blanket because according to the city rules they can only turn on the heater starting November 8th every year, and frankly it felt cold in the room at night. Ridiculous reasoning for a luxury hotel. This is not a boarding school, this is a luxury hotel. They only serve breakfast and they have a bar. We were in Room 54 with balcony, the best room in the hotel

Hotel of authentic beauty, beyond expectations. Strategic location in the Sasso Caveoso that allows you to enjoy exceptionally bright rooms in a context that, by its nature, has very dark private spaces.
Impeccable renovation and not obvious in its minimalism, with materials whose high quality is perceived. Service h24 and good level. Staff of extreme kindness that respects confidentiality and is always available. Excellent cleaning. Absolute relaxation. A jewel in the jewel of Matera.

We were extremely impressed with this hotel. The room we stayed in was beautiful and well appointed. All of the staff was most helpful and welcoming! Particular mention to:
Asia in housekeeping who was so lovely-she went out of her way to accommodate our requests and made sure she was there to say goodbye when we checked out. She is a breath of fresh air and an asset for this hotel!
Christian at check in was most helpful to make recommendations for restaurants in the area and help us with transportation options.
The breakfast offered was excellent with many options and traditional Piatto Cialledda and Foccacia which were both delicious!
The hotel is centrally located in the Sassi with many restaurant options nearby.
We wouldn't hesitate to recommend this delightful hotel and would stay there again without any hesitations!
