Detailed Reviews
Your impression of the hotel Sassi is going to vary wildly depending on which room you are allocated - judging by our group’s experience (about 10 rooms between us) there is a huge variation in size, atmosphere and quality. Mine was 504, in the area behind reception. Simple but very clean, with an almost domed concrete (?) ceiling, it felt really quite monastic! The bathroom was small but manageable and the shower was great. I had a view of some of the sasso houses from my room, although not the most picturesque (which was round the corner). There was a fridge but no other “kitchen” facilities like a kettle.
Breakfast was excellent, with a good choice of fresh fruit, breads (sweet and savoury), hard boiled eggs, tomatoes, cheese, ham, yogurt, croissants and cake. Tea and coffee were made to order.
The hotel’s location is excellent, right in the middle of the Sassi, so there is plenty of opportunity to wander around and explore locally, and the views by reception are stunning!

This is certainly a unique experience staying in the Hotel Sassi which is constructed using the caves which are the dominant feature of beautiful Matera.
We stayed for 5 nights which was rather too long!
The main attraction of the hotel is its quirkiness and definitely nothing to do with luxury.
The first room we were offered was tiny and we felt it would not be comfortable staying there for 5 nights so we asked for a change. The girl at reception was delightful and seemed eager to please
The second room where we stayed for 2 nights was beautiful and appeared to have been done up recently. It was very spacious and would have been perfect had it not been for some sort of generator just outside the room which made a terrible din, coming on every 30 mins day and night!
We moved again to an ok room which was small and very dated but we stuck it out for the next 3 nights!
The breakfast was basic but good with excellent coffee
The bar was only open 1 of the nights we were there!
We felt that the hotel could definitely do with some investment to bring it up to scratch

The Hotel Sassi (sassi means caves) is actually built on multiple levels into former cave homes in Matera. There are many steps, so if that is a concern, think twice. The rough rock-hewn walls are atmospheric. The hotel is fairly no-frills. There are great views across the valleys and up the hill to the Cathedral. The weather was warm and the room was quite warm. The AC cannot be set lower than 23 C and in fact the room temp never got below 24 C, which is too warm for sleeping. They did bring a fan at my request. There was a good strong shower, and a min-fridge. There is no safe in the room. Breakfast was quite nice, no hot food but extensive, varied and interesting choices, and cappuccino was served quickly at the bar.

+1
We stayed as part of an Exodus tour group - rooms extremely varied with some renovated rooms/caves which were pretty but still damp and so made all belongings damp and smelly. Our cave was very old with sofa beds and a tiny bathroom that was horrible - small and dirty. Of our group of 16 - 6 people asked to move and this was accommodated after one night. If you are going with exodus ask for a renovated room and pay for the upgrade it will be worth it.
Breakfast is good with great views from the terrace. Don’t take good luggage as these are dragged and bounced down the steps . Avoid room 608.

Very characteristic room with spectacular views of the Sasso Caveo and the Cathedral.
There was a problem with the air conditioner during the entire stay that could not refresh the room (as a result between afternoon, morning and night the temperature in the room averaged between 30° and 31.5°). Although we pointed out the problem in reception the problem was not solved.
Breakfast that presented both sweet and savory, with a greater presence of sautéed products than dessert.
Too bad for the problem of the air conditioning in the room, which with the 37 ° exterior has certainly created discomfort during our stay.
It would be enough to pay more attention to guest comfort and detail to reflect excellence.

I recently stayed at Sassi Hotel - Matera and was thoroughly disappointed with my experience. The rooms are in desperate need of renovation and updating - the furniture is old and creaky, and the decor is tired and outdated.
But the real issues began when I entered my room. The cleanliness was appalling - there was dust and dirt everywhere, and the bedding was stained and worn out. I even found a spider crawling on the bed! The bathroom was no better, with mold growing on the walls and a perpetual musty smell.
The breakfast was also extremely basic, with a limited selection of stale pastries and overcooked eggs. And to top it all off, the service was unfriendly and unhelpful.
I was really looking forward to exploring Matera, but the Sassi Hotel's subpar conditions and service made my stay a complete disappointment. I would not recommend this hotel to anyone, and I hope they take the necessary steps to improve the conditions and service.

A bit of a challenge to get there, as the hotel is in the middle of the pedestrian area, so you needed to walk down coble stone uneven steps with your suitcase – and make sure it wasn’t a dead end 😊. Luckily I could walk down when leaving – still a bit of a challenge with the suitcase, but easier than walking back up. Very welcoming and helpful staff.
My cave room was very small, the bathroom was tine and the ceiling was “held up” by small manly figure. All nice and clean. My favourite part was the balcony, which had a stunning panoramic view of the cathedral and most of Matera.
My room was located just behind the reception, which was a bit noisy at night. Loud talking, which was a bit annoying when it’s 1 am. Heard very little from the town, even if I slept with my balcony doors open (prefer this to AC).
Lovely breakfast with lots of choices, both savoury and sweet and lots of fruit. So all in all, very nice stay.

Hotel (which is not a Hotel) in the heart of the Sassi. There is the central core with the Reception and the breakfast room, while the rooms (and this is the beauty) are scattered in various suggestive spots. We had a room with a wonderful view directly on the Sassi and in the evening it seemed to be inserted in a Nativity scene when the lights of the lampposts and in the houses began to come on. I forgot: a great and hearty breakfast with fresh desserts and an infinite number of drinks. Also good salty (Recommend the Pecorino cheese... )

Very interesting cave hotel! Since there are no cars allowed on adjacent streets, one must walk from the nearest plaza. Cobblestone streets may be treacherous when wet. Handrails rare but helpful when available. Clothes dry very slowly in the rooms because of high humidity. Good breakfast. Great views!

We stayed on July 26th in room 601, clean, small but very cuddly. In the afternoon, at six, we toured Matera with Giuseppe, a very expert guide who emotionally involved us in the history of the city, which concretely went from STALLS to STARS. The visit to the cathedral was not included in the tour and we were unable to see it. Ask first if there is a visit, otherwise go alone. In the morning, a delicious sweet and savory buffet breakfast. Tip: when you leave your car at the external car park that has an agreement with the hotel (€20 per day), pack a backpack with everything you need for a night or two. To return.😊

Being located in the historic center and surrounded by pedestrian streets , you can't reach the hotel with car , but we have an agreement with a private garage, the daily cost is Euro 11. It is about 5 minutes walk from the hotel , on request they also organize pick-up services . PARKING Nicoletti MICHELE Via Vincenzo Cappelluti , 1 - tel 0835/330896 .
Otherwise , you can park in the white stripes for free ( eg . Via Piave , Vico Piave ) or the blue lines for a fee of Euro 0,70 per hour ( eg , Via Amendola , Via Roma , Via Lucana )
no, occorre lasciare l'auto fuori della zona pedonale e farsi accompagnare vicino all'albergo, per i bagagli occorre fare diversi metri a piedi.
