Corte San Pietro is a micro district, a neighbourhood, with a courtyard onto which face rooms and suites carved out from the tufa stone, soft local sedimentary limestone. The rooms, former cave-dwellings, keep the same house number as in the past, when they were inhabited by large families. Remained uninhabited for over 50 years, they have been subject to a long and accurate process of preservation and restoration with discreet modern technological systems and have now become unusual and unique rooms and suites. Breakfast is being served in the courtyard in summertime. The historical structure has been laid bare, enhancing the masonry in tufa stone featured by niches and old-aged openings, and topped by large vaults. In the courtyard, the upper part of three cisterns helps understand the systems formerly used to collect the rain waters, subsequently connected to one another probably during the second world war. They now can be visited through highly suggestive inner passages. This is one of the main reasons why Matera is part of the Unesco world heritage list since 1993, rainwaters were then used by the inhabitants of the cave-dwellings. At Corte San Pietro, technology is invisibile, Wi-Fi is available everywhere, which allows our hosts to use it admiring the plants typical of the mediterranean vegetation such as salvia, rosemary or myrtle. Just a stone away from the hotel, the cave-church Madonna de Idris overlooks the Sasso Caveoso and the suggestive stream Gravina. Leaving the church, downstairs is the Piazza S. Pietro Caveoso with the beautiful baroque church dating back to the 14 C. Farther up, Via Purgatorio vecchio with the church where Saint John of Matera was born and where now it is possible to visit a huge cistern called Palombaro, used in the past to collect the rain waters coming from the hill where the castle Tramontano stands. Nearby, the district Malve, where graves dating back to the lombard period were found and mentioned in Carlo Levi's book as "the dead are above the living". Going from Via Buozzi up to the Civita Hill is the MUSMA, the most important italian museum exclusively dedicated to the contemporary scuplture, located in the 17 c. Palazzo Pomarici, the only italian museum in cave: a perfect symbiosis between the sculptures and some of the most characteristical places in the heart of the Sassi. A little farther up, the cathedral dating back to the 13 c., built in romanesque-apulian style on the highest point of the hill that divides the two Sassi. And a lot more to see...

Ladies and gentlemen, here is class and elegance in a corner of Matera, with apartments and residences built from stones, colors and a high-level atmosphere in the same mix that welcomes the guest and pampers him minute by minute. Our experience has enhanced the concept of being able to experience earthly pleasures, in a historical context of all eras. My wife and I lived 3 nights and 3 days of dreams. An almost unique experience in the world of Corte San Pietro; since their welcome. Mrs. Anne, a Frenchwoman who found her prince many years before in the historic city, was so affectionate and helped me a few days before our arrival to choose the room, number 13, a house on 2 floors, a suite with a stone sitting room , adjacent room with bathroom with shower and tub, simply divided by a light and light fabric curtain. A copper staircase and Jerusalem stone steps took us to our love nest, a window overlooking the courtyard of the complex. A fairy tale in a small location where even the owner and the family care that the guest is sacred and venerated. Well done to Giuseppe who did his utmost with assistance and attention to detail and Agnese who made every breakfast in an ancient room an appetizing touch of class. Matera is history and Corte San Pietro is part of it!! Chapeau

We only stayed here for one night, but there were 5 of us and we had 3 rooms. It was a great stay - the front desk was extremely friendly and helpful. The rooms were very nice and all a good size. The breakfast room was great as well. The sweet owner came by to thank us for staying at their hotel. We so appreciated that we were able to check in early when we arrived, and also that they kept our luggage for us until 4;30pm after we checked out at 11am. It is in a great location in the sassi - located on a street that cars can drive on so our driver was able to drop us off right by the front door. Would highly recommend staying here.

The hotel is truly typical of Matera, built into the stone of the mountain. It has an interior courtyard and a large room in which to have a drink and/or breakfast. The welcome there is perfect and in French to boot. However, the hotel also has rooms outside the base hotel…. The hotel has expanded into the city like others, it seems... We found ourselves in a very well renovated and very well equipped room (including a bubble bath) but without a window except the one from the front door and located along a pedestrian road about 50 meters from the hotel. Despite this and even if we would have preferred to be located in the hotel rather than in the outbuildings, we had a good stay. The musical breakfast was of a very good standard. Served at the table, it allowed us to discover very good quality local products. Little tip: ask to visit the old water tanks of the hotel... they are below the main room and are worth the visit. Two things to know: the hotel does not have a view of the city or the valley and the hotel is located in ZTL. It is therefore necessary to park your vehicle in a public or private car park outside the area…

Fabulous experience!!! the beauty and comfort of the room created in the cave is unimaginable. everything perfect, friendly and helpful staff. Excellent breakfast served at the table, with the background of live music from an expert pianist. Fresh fruit in the room every day, much appreciated after intense days outdoors. Furthermore, for New Year's Eve they made us find a delicious artisanal panettone in the room. They also showed us the original and very well kept cisterns in the basement. Thanks to all the staff. Highly recommended!!!!!!

Very central location, friendly and super helpful staff. We spent a wonderful end of the year with our big dog Ares.
The owners are 2 extremely refined and elegant and super nice people
An excellent breakfast with top quality products accompanied by live piano music.
Each room personalized with guests' names.
At the reception a lady of French origin, I think her name is Anna, (forgive me if I don't remember her name☺️) and Giuseppe satisfied all our requests making our stay unforgettable
Impeccable cleanliness. Affiliated garage and shuttle service to the hotel (for a fee)
A magical place in an even more magical place☺️
Thank you

We were traveling around Southern Italy and we thought of visiting Matera. When it was time to choose our hotel. My husband and some chose Corte San Pietro for several reasons. Entrance was near the road - no need to climb steep stairs to reach the front desk. They had reserved parking slots in a parking garage with transfers (for a fee) to and from it. But the hotel offers more - The owners and staff were friendly and helpful. The rooms kept the integrity of the cave theme but were modern and cozy. There was constant hot water for showers. The bed was large and firm. Breakfast was plentiful and yummy.

We enjoyed our stay in the hotel. I highly recommend you stay here if you are in Matera

Corte san Pietro is a beautiful modern hotel in a perfect location near the base of Sasso Caveoso in Matera. Each room in the hotel is unique, and most are located in the old caves (“sassi”) that give this section of Matera it’s unique character. But the hotel amenities all are modern and up-to-date. You’re literally right across the street from entrances to famous sites such as San Pietro Caveoso, Madonna D’dris, and San Giovanni in Monterrone, and steps away from numerous alleyways and streets leading through the Sasso Caveoso district. Hotel staff are cordial and incredibly attentive. They made us feel very welcome indeed; their introduction to the Sassi district upon arrival is particularly helpful for newcomers. The breakfast was sumptuous Lucanian feast. (Don’t miss the ancient cisterns they discovered underneath the property when building the hotel…entrance located in the breakfast area.) All in all, a really magical place. One note on parking: because of its location in the traffic-limited Sassi district, the hotel doesn’t have adjacent parking. However, they suggest several local garages; we’d recommend Damasco on Recinto XX Settembre; nice attentive people, and for a small charge they’ll shuttle you to the hotel door.

What a find! We stayed for our 30th Anniversary and we were treated royally (thank you, we really appreciated all you did for us, you went above and beyond).

We’ve never stayed in a hotel like it, the location was fantastic, the rooms were built in caves and had everything you wished for. The breakfast was outstanding and you ate whilst a pianist played in the corner of the room.

All the staff were attentive and friendly, arranging tour guides and recommending great restaurants ensuring a memorable stay.

A true haven of comfort and elegance, highly recommended for discerning travellers!

We wanted to stay in the Matera Sassi district - this hotel was perfect. It started with staff offering to book a car park in the new area of town. It was walkable to the hotel but we chose to take them up on their offer to have a driver pick us up at the car park - 20 euro for 4 adults. The garage is new and was the easiest parking we've ever had in Italy. Hint: if you're driving, use Google maps on your phone instead of the car's nav system to get to the garage. The car system took us to the wrong place and we talked to another couple who had the same experience. When we put in google nav, we got to the garage easily.

Check in was easy and very welcoming. We got lots of info and a nice orientation to our rooms. Everyone was telling us "relax, this is your home now and we will take care of everything" (and they did). Our rooms were lovely, ours even had a sauna in the larger shower. Nice amenities like robes and slippers and cold bottles of water in fridge at no charge. Note that the rooms are carved out of caves so they are on the dark side. I asked for an extra lamp, and it was very promptly brought to our room. Beds were quite comfy.

Breakfast was fantastic! Lots of typical Italian foods along with American basics. The coffee was great, and our waitress cheerfully accommodated our requests.

Finally, location is perfect - we walked everywhere. Didn't need the car at all during our 2 night visit.

All in all a five star experience!

What a special experience it was staying here. Our room was a renovated cave room that mixed traditional local architecture with tastefully done modern convenience. The breakfast room was also a beautiful room, with access to old underground cisterns that the hotel owner preserved (very interesting to see, and a nice bonus to staying here). The food was terrific, with generous portions. But the real treat in staying here was the lovely owner who made the rounds greeting guests at breakfast. We learned a lot talking with him, and his warmth and hospitality clearly sets the tone for the entire staff, all of whom were excellent, and were exceptionally helpful (including phoning numerous restaurants to find us a table on a busy night). All in all, a lovely, peaceful, hotel that treats its guests very well.

Take the room which has full court Yard access, not the room which has one window to the street, as that room was noisier.
