Il Belvedere hotel garners high marks for cleanliness, with guests often noting the spacious and immaculate rooms. The prime location is a hit among reviewers, affording stunning views and proximity to local attractions. While the unique rooms—some carved directly into rock—add character, a few guests find them somewhat chilly and dated. The hotel's atmosphere, enhanced by soft lighting and charming courtyards, alongside the commendable staff, contributes to a memorable stay. However, opinions on the hotel's value for money are divided. The terrace and breakfast options are among the amenities that earn rave reviews.

This is an absolutely lovely spot. We stayed for 2 days and wished we had stayed longer

The views from the hotel terrace are just jaw dropping. On both mornings we enjoyed breakfast on the terrace whilst admiring the view. Also enjoyed an aperitif on the terrace in the evening.

David, who welcomed us on check in was fantastic. He provided an overview of the town with some recommendations of locations to eat/drink. Also helped with luggage to the room and was genuinely helpful and accommodating.

The room was lovely. We paid a little more for a
‘cave’ room which was large and very pleasant. Bathroom was good, large with an excellent shower. There was plenty of space and storage.

The only downside for the stay was the bed which was unfortunately not comfortable and very noisy to the extent that my wife and I did not want to roll over in the night as the noise would wake the other. Hopefully just a quirk for that room that will be remedied. For this reason I felt I could not give five stars

Breakfast selection was excellent with everything that you would expect from an Italian hotel breakfast. Lots of fresh products, cakes, croissants, cold meats, cheeses etc. the fact you could then eat on the terrace with the incredible view of the town meant it was a meal to be savoured and remembered. Coffee was freshly made by the staff and very good.

For parking - talk to the hotel prior to arrival. If possible arrive before 8pm as the road is restricted after this time. Prior to that time you can drive to hotel to drop luggage. The hotel staff can guide you to either on street free parking nearby or a secure parking station which is a few minutes drive away and provide a shuttle (for a small fee) to and from the hotel.

We loved our stay here

the Belvedere is first of all very clean, welcoming and in a truly excellent location: not in the center but within walking distance, this allows you to both park and have your car nearby and enjoy a truly perfect view of this enchanting city . My room, although standard, was very spacious with a very comfortable double bed (memory top which makes the difference) and wider than the standard measurements. It is also possible to use a private secondary entrance both day and night, as if it were a private apartment. Abundant breakfast for everyone (including celiacs). Highly recommended.

We stayed here 2 nights but could happily stayed longer!

Staff was exceptionally, amazingly friendly, with best recommendations also what to see, where to eat etc. (Both, the guy and the girl at reception) - really going the extra mile!

Hotel is very lovely, wonderful terrace with the best view in the city (onto the old town), short walk to everything, free parking right in front of the hotel on the street. Nice lobby, nice breakfast, wifi worked well even on terrace! Its before the exclusion zone so you can drive up by car.

Our room was beautifully cave themed, comfortable and just a few stairs up the common terrace. Terrace has wonderful views, best in town and you can buy wine and snacks at the nearby store and enjoy them on terrace, hotel even happily offered us glasses and plates.

Breakfast was great, ham, cheese, eggs, 3 types of cake, croissants filled with jam, vanilla, pistaccio, and plain. Juices, cereals, tomato, fruit, bread and focaccia, tea or coffee....and some cake was still available to take later for if you want to enjoy it on terrace.

Wifi works great, room offers tea cattle and tea/coffee, slippers and nice bathroom amenities.

This place is really a must - a gem!

This hotel is incredible. It is perfectly situated towards the end of the old city, with a back gate leading onto the tourist walkway that wends it's way through the fascinating old city of Matera. We were hosted by Simone, who was so helpful to us with recommendations, tour options, transportation issues, and providing us with all the things we needed to make our time in Matera magical. Thank you so much!!! The cave rooms are large and special with the special lighting and the cave walls making up interesting alcoves. The bathrooms are very large and have anything you could possibly need. The patio has incredible views of both the gorge and the rest of the city, which when lit up at night is truly spectacular. The breakfast is to die for. The "drunken" cake is a recipe I will now have to try and replicate because it's the best chocolate cake I've ever had. There are also a large selection of pastries and savoury treats in addition to the more traditional fare. If you are planning a trip to Matera, which I highly recommend, you need to stay at this hotel.

This Pension is beautifully located opposite the Matera Sassi. Therefore, they appear in an area in which persons not residing in Matera are not allowed to park the vehicle on the street at night. For this reason, the Inn contacts us in advance to offer parking, paying in nearby areas.
Although the Pension is not built in a sasso, it offers a wonderful panorama facing Matera.
The receptionist warmly welcomes us, shows us the room, then explains again the parking situation in the Inn area and finally offers us a pleasant route around the Matera sassis. It also gives us valuable advice about restaurants in the city, which we were able to check and enjoy.

The room is beautiful, is about 23 m2. It combines antique charm with modern furniture. The bathroom is large and very functional. The huge Italian shower was designed in the rock, like a small cave.

Breakfast is of very high quality and is served on a terrace overlooking the Sassi and the dome.

In summary, this Pension deserves 4 stars.

The hotel is built in the rock with a stunning view on the city that you can enjoy from the terrace where you have breakfast. I had a tiny room in a cave, small but lovely and with all the necessary things. The guy at the reception was very helpful, giving information on the city and also finding another hotel for the following night as they were full. Breakfast is rich and very good, beginning from 7.30, a very rare event. The price is very good.

This gem hotel is based in the hearth of the 'sassi'.
All the rooms are excavated in the rock, they have independent access, are very spacious and accurately decorated. The hotel has a terrace with the best view of Matera where breakfast and aperitivo are served.
The staff is extremely welcoming and helpful.

Excellent location, that is, at the beginning of the stones, high up, with a view of all the stones of matera. Idea at dawn, with the sun on the right illuminating Matera on your left. With the car you unload forts at the entrance, and at 100 meters you have the covered and guarded parking. At the reception there is David to receive us: very welcoming and professional. The price, we were in a superior even, was a last minute, really competitive and affordable. Room in fabulous stone. The best location in Matera for views of the city itself. The panoramic walk in front of the hotel, directly a stone pavement that leads directly into the center of the most historic part. Outdoor terrace for breakfast, almost cantilevered over the gorge and with spatial views. Breakfast not excellent but complete and good.

Hotel in an excellent position for visiting the Sassi area. Breathtaking view from the breakfast terrace over the gravina and the caveoso.
Room "in a cave" furnished with taste, impeccable cleanliness, courtesy and kindness of the staff who advised us on the itinerary.
A few meters away you can leave your car in the covered public car park.
I recommend the hotel without any doubt, it is the perfect choice for Matera!

Together with my family we returned for the second year to this beautiful hotel. The staff welcomes you impeccably, the cleanliness is always perfect and a rich breakfast is served on the terrace that allows you to get lost between the stones of Matera and Murgia. Thank you for hosting us again this year.

Sorry for the delay in responding! There is a "museum" of a typical cave dwelling within about a 5-7 min. walk downhill from The Belvedere. We used a guide and since one of our party has severe arthritis, the driver drove to points of interest which minimized the need to walk. You might want to consider something similar since walking in general is a bit challenging.

I am sorry; I can't remember but to explain to the desk staff ( they all speak impeccable English). You go up the stair case BEHIND the check in desk, go up one flight of stairs. It is the BR door on the left (there may be only 2 rooms up there) whose patio door opens out onto the street that overlooks the caves. It has 2 double beds.

Hello Barbara, 1) "standard plus / comfort " and " double or twin room " are NOT cave room. If you make a reservation, write a note and let the staff know that you want a non cave room. 2) Yes, there are different prices. 3) There is no one room with view, but you can enjoy a great view from the common terrace. Thank you
