In the central Piazza San Pietro Caveoso, this property offers rooms, inside the caves, that take you back in time without sacrificing comfort. Expertly furnished, precisely because they follow the rooms where local families lived in the past, they are not very bright, but very characteristic. Breakfast, rich and varied, is served by friendly and professional waiters, inside a large cave. The only drawback is the affiliated garage whose shuttle, indispensable because the Relais is in the ZTL area, costs 10 euros each way, and if those who stay overnight need to travel by car several times a day, it becomes quite expensive.

It was really wonderful experience.
Staff were extremely friendly, always smiling, ver polite and helpful.
They brought our luggage to the room and did not allow to carry it on our own.
Room was beautifully decorated and integrated into to the cave. Wow!
Highest class cosmetics up there:)
Breakfast is served in amazingly refurbished cave restaurant with a terrace to Matera. Food selection is a VIP class - from ordinary scrambled egg to fresh cheese and Michelin chef prepared pastries. Book your time to enjoy slow breakfast and celebrate life for such gourmet moments:)
Matera itself got some magic- you may walk those stony streets all day long and enjoy each corner for a beautiful pictures and restaurant with amazing food and souvenir shops.

We had a car. Hotel offers city parking and transfer from parking to hotel and backwards. This service costs 45 eur for the first night and 30 eur for the each next night. So it is really convenient and you do not need to take care about your car. Because parking in ancient Matera is allowed just with permission.
Next time we would stay ant Sant'Angelo without any doubts again:)
Compliments!!!!

A really beautiful little boutique hotel right in the middle of the sassi. The staff were really wonderful. Michele greeted us, showed us to our room, and organised breakfast the next morning (which was wonderful). He is a truly a treasure! As is the young lady on reception, who was bright and efficient and a pleasure to deal with (I'm sorry I don't know her name). She arranged an Ape tour for us at short notice and guided us through the breakfast offerings the following morning. These two very much contributed to the enjoyment of our stay. The only negative in our stay was that the air conditioner in our suite (room 15) was incredibly noisy and kept us awake through much of the night. It was incredibly hot when we stayed, so unfortunately turning it off wasn't an option. I contacted reception about it not long after we checked in. I do understand the difficulty of getting such things rectified in Italy on a Sunday, and it was explained that they would have offered us another room but they were fully booked, however the room was relatively expensive and it did impact negatively on our stay. I hope this is rectified for future guests!

Keep in mind that the brightness of the suite seen in the photos on the site is deceptive.
The room is oppressively dark.
I can understand wanting to evoke the atmosphere of a cave house but it is not possible to stay in a room where you can't even read the newspaper and to see in the wardrobe you have to use the flashlight on your mobile phone,
Even the bathroom is dark, there is a nice magnifying mirror but what's the point if you can't see anyway?
It would be a well-paid 4-star hotel, perhaps a simple rheostat could have been applied to allow guests to adjust the brightness.
Furthermore, the cleaning of the room is very neglected, dust accumulated in quantity.
The sink is completely chipped as is the tap, which is also full of limescale.
Bath towel clearly stained.
The only positive thing is the bed, comfortable with soft pillows and soft sheets.
The breakfast is simple but good, certainly not 4 star, but there is Mr Michele who is very kind and helpful.

The hotel is ideally located in the center of the Sassi with a magnificent view of Matera. The reception is run by Michèle and her daughter, the warm welcome from this person makes your stay start well.
We were in the 15.50 m2 suite with a magnificent stone bathroom.
Spacious room is very well equipped and very clean. Mini bar available, bathrobes.
Breakfast is served in the cave under the hotel, really typical.
Michèle is always at your service to prepare a beautiful plate of local charcuterie and cheese.
The breakfast is really very generous
Paid parking is available with transfer to the hotel, very convenient...
Thanks again to Michèle for making us have a pleasant stay

We wanted to stay in the Sassi and Matera was the one place on our road trip that had "luxury" hotels, so we decided to go to the Sant'Angelo Residenze. So happy with our choice. The room was about 300 metres from the main hotel. It was was really comfortable, spacious and tastefully decorated and furnished. Reception was very helpful, recommended a nice restaurant for dinner.

There's plenty of reasons why you are going to love your stay at this "scattered hotel", made of rooms hosted by different parts of a large, typical Sassi house (the street is the hotel's corridor!). It's quiet, well furnished, elegant and cozy. But THE reason why my family and I loved the place was Michele, a mid-aged Italian gentleman who welcomes you in the breakfast room as if it were his home. He chooses gourmet cheeses and sausages in little local shops and advises you on great homemade cakes, commands a reasonable self-taught English and is always happy to help, amiable and discreet. He and his colleague Rosy were the extra touch that made our stay a charm. If you choose to visit La Casa di Lucio, bring him our regards!

Great little hotel right in the middle of Matera but a bit off the main busy roads which means it is quiet and relaxing to stay there while exploring town during a few days. The room was like an old cave with a special bath tub you won't forget. Best part though was Michele at reception who took care of us as if we were part of his family (he also prepares the great and delicious breakfast with freshly cut ham, mozzarella, breads, yoghurts, etc). They also organized parking and transfer from and to there directly from the hotel. Recommend staying here if you visit Matera.

We had been to Matera a couple of times in the past but only as a day trip, this time we decided to stay a few nights so as to fully explore this wonderful place. We chose Sant@ Angelo Hotel and were not disappointed, Our rooms were modern and well maintained. Breakfast was a few minutes walk away and up a picturesque stairway in the main building which was a fantastic and soothing place to start our day with a large choice of breakfast goodies to be had. The staff were attentive pleasant and extremely helpful, this includes our site contact Michele,
He was the font of all knowledge re the area, helpful to the max and just a fantastic chap to get to know. I had many a chat in the evenings and found out much more about Matera just from him. He is passionate about his work and more so in keeping the visiting tourists happy and content. Would we go back to Matera? yes, would we go back to Sant'Angelo? Big yes... Thank You MIchele! And see you soon :)

Wonderful location, close to the gorge, albeit hard to find on foot. We were rescued by the delightful Anna, who showed us to our room, situated in a courtyard beneath a huge jasmine. We were introduced to the ubiquitous Michele and shown to our well appointed room. At this point, it’s fair to say, we booked this hotel as it was cheaper than it’s contemporaries but, the room over delivers in size, comfort and facilities and is remarkable value. Anna gave us a great map with her recommended walking route which meant that, within a few hours, we felt we’d seen everything of import given we were only in Matera for 24 hours. A great night’s sleep, a walk down in to the gorge and Michele’s well documented breakfast beneath the jasmine, were just perfect.
Happy days, yummy food!
