Sant'angelo - Matera hotel boasts a unique atmosphere that seamlessly marries traditional charm with modern aesthetics, a feature that has earned consistent praise from guests. The hotel's cleanliness and spacious rooms are often highlighted as significant positives, while its central location near attractions is popular despite the challenge of stairs.
Travelers enjoy the modern amenities and the stunning views, although some have reservations about the service consistency and privacy concerns on shared patios. While the amenities, including an extensive breakfast, are frequently lauded, the value is sometimes questioned due to the costly parking and shuttle services.

Hotel's Favourite
My Aunt and I stayed here two days in September. We ABSOLUTELY loved it. One of the coolest hotels ever. And I've stayed in a lot of amazing places in this world. Matera is a gem, ancient, different, beautiful. It's best early in the morning or at sunset as the tourists begin to leave. Our room overlooked the historic center, and we woke up to the bells chiming over the valley. We had a gorgeous terrace too! The soaps and shampoos were Ortiga, everything smelled awesome. The breakfast buffet was unbelievable - the best I had in Italy. But mostly the people - everyone who worked there was terrific. The woman at the front desk, was soooo gracious and helped us with everything. She had grown up in the area as well, very friendly and warm. Something so great for a luxury hotel. I would go back in a heart beat!

Dear Angela, I thank you the kind words! I am very happy that your stay lived up to your expectations, it is a source of great pride for us to know that everything was perfect. Matera is a unique city, and it leaves its mark on anyone who comes to visit. You and your Aunt Valerie were two lovely guests and I will be very happy to have you as our guests again in the future! Best regards from our caves!

The room was quite beautiful and you really felt the "cave experience" as it was quite dark with only two small windows. The decor was lovely. The only drawback was the bathroom which had the smallest shower I have ever seen on land. I understand that they hotel had to work within the confines of the original caves but perhaps that could have been better designed. The staff was wonderful, particularly Biagio at the front desk. The doorman/bellman was also very helpful but I don't recall his name. The location off the main square was ideal.

We stayed at the Sant'Angelo hotel for 4 nights in January 2020. We stayed in Room 52, and I have to say that the view from the room was absolutely unique and breath-taking. The room had its own balcony on three sides and from here it was possible to look across Matera and Piazza San Pietro Caveoso. The facilities in the room were excellent and the breakfast service was also perfect. The room was completely silent and we slept very well in an excellent bed (very large and comfortable). The staff at reception were extremely professional and friendly.

The view from our room was incredible, the breakfast was very good, and the staff did a great job making reservations at unique local restaurants. Other than that, I do not feel like the hotel justifies the high price. The rooms are okay, but not ‘luxury’. And the air conditioning is basically non existent. We stayed for 3 nights and slept on top of the covers with no clothes the whole time and were still sweaty. After the second night of not sleeping well, they moved us to another room that was a few degrees cooler. We were in Italy for 6 weeks during record heat, and stayed in plenty of hotels that had adequate AC. If I was paying €100 a night I would not have complained, but we splurged to stay at this ‘luxury’ property & paid over €400 a night, so being sweaty and unable to sleep just wasn’t acceptable.

We opted for a junior suite in a cave originally occupied by the Sassi people. The cave had been updated and a special paint covering applied to the walls to reduce humidity. Despite the modernizations, you were always aware you were in a cave. For example, our night stand was a ledge in the cave. When you turn off the lights, the room becomes very dark. And because the walls are so thick, you don’t hear any exterior noise. Visitors should be aware that there are a lot of stairs to climb to the rooms. The included breakfast is very good.
Rooms are relatively expensive. I believe our room was €380 per night.
The hotel is in a good location and the service at the hotel is exceptional.

What a disappointment this was for us after having read all the wonderful reviews. On arrival we allocated a beautiful suite which we had booked with spectacular views of Matera caves and the church. This is where it ended. The staff are stuck up and snobbish & having come from Canne Bianche boutique hotel where service is on another level we were shocked by the employees at this hotel.
On the second day we started smelling this awful stench in our room to the extent that we did not sleep the entire night. Absolutely disgusting. At 6am we called reception who sent someone up at 8am who confirmed that sometimes they have issues with drainage. 🤢🤢 they offered us €100 reduction which I’m sorry Is not acceptable! Having paid a fortune to be in this establishment & not sleeping due to issues on their side they should own up and we should have been credited for the 1 night.
Also employee service is paramount when you paying rates like this.
Unfortunately the service coupled by the stench ruined the experience for us

Hotel is well situated in Matera - rooms are spread out and not within the Reception area - those with a view and small terrace are large, clean and beautiful. Staff is very attentive and did a great job helping with reservations and private transportation. While no fault of Hotel, if you have mobility issues be forewarned that there are many steps to climb to access both room location and within some rooms. Their restaurant which has a great view requires even more climbing.

It is difficult to find the right words to describe a magical city like Matera, you have to live this experience to understand why today it is considered a UNESCO World Heritage Site, but you have to live it starting from the choice of where to stay.
I would like to share with you my magnificent experience during my three short but intense days spent in Matera as a guest of the Resort ’Hotel Sant’Angelo.
A fantastic welcome, friendliness and helpfulness, impeccable service but sleeping in a “cave” was a unique experience that must be lived at least once in a lifetime, a magical place, especially the unique view of the Church of Santa Maria de Idris overlooking the terrace of the room.
The room is furnished with taste and attention to detail and details, considering that the cave has been transformed into a room, is extremely comfortable, dry and really welcomed.
The Resort has two catering services, the first is the Pizzeria “PIU ‘SUD”, an excellent room carved into the caves and furnished and cared for in every detail. The goodness and particularity of the dishes on the menu, is characterized by the attention in the choice of raw material then by the quality and delicacy that is served at the table.
The second is the Regiacorte Restaurant where from breakfast to dinner, unique dishes of high quality are served, delicious and prepared by fantastic chefs.
The service is impeccable in particular from the reception to the service, the wine list offers a wide choice of excellent quality wines the menu instead, seasonal with attention to detail and above all, oriented to uniqueness and attention to preparation.
From appetizers to first courses, main courses, side dishes and desserts, are of excellent quality and served with class on refined dishes and always carefully chosen for each course.
The price is to be considered medium-high within the reach of many and still adequate and not excessive considering the place.
The setting between soft lighting and the terrace overlooking Matera, make this place unique and particular.
If you pass by Matera, I highly recommend this Resort, I already miss it and hope to be able to return.
My sincerest thanks for the hospitality and services offered.

The Hotel Sant'Angelo in Matera is a hidden gem in the heart of the Sassi. The unique and fascinating atmosphere of this hotel, nestled among the ancient caves, offers an unforgettable experience. The rooms are luxurious and with attention to the smallest details, with a perfect balance between modern comfort and historical tradition. The panoramic view of the city is breathtaking and the staff is exceptionally friendly and professional. The breakfast is rich and delicious, with fresh and local products. The central location allows you to easily explore the wonders of Matera. A stay at Sant'Angelo is a journey back in time with all the comforts of the present. Highly recommended!

I spent one night in this beautiful Hotel with a breathtaking view of Piazza del Caveoso! Upon arrival I was greeted with kindness by everyone! The room was clean and gives a unique experience, a return to the past!
Breakfast is served in the fantastic dining room of the restaurant, clean and tidy and I must congratulate the breakfast manager, Maristella, who welcomed me with sympathy and described the various typical products of Lucania on display on the buffet, advising me at best! Thanks for everything! A place to come back to!
