The Hotel San Giorgio, in the heart of the Sassi of Matera, has ten unique suites spread out over several residences. Our guests can immerse themselves in an atmosphere of relaxation and history, an environment of familiar warmth. All suites have outdoor spaces During the renovation work, a rupestrian complex came to light, its origins dates back to the X century; the many traces of centuries of culture and life in the Sassi are shown by the change over the years in the use of this place full of historical values.

Every aspect of this hotel was perfect! The location is close everything. The staff, especially Gianluca, went above and beyond! He had so many stories about how the family started the hotel. Lots of information about the olive mill that on of our rooms was attached to. Can't forget the wonderful breakfast/lunch offering set out daily!

If you want a hotel in the heart of the Sassi area of Matera you can't go wrong with a stay here. It's within walking distance of all the main sights. Staff really excellent ....they were able to facilitate early access to room & allowed us to leave our bags for a while on morning of departure. All facilities in good order & breakfast was fine. It was the most interesting room we've ever stayed in:- a red curtain the in kitchen area was pulled back to reveal a direct view into the San Giorgio caves. A guided tour of the San Giorgio church cave excavations was offered at reduced price to guests and definitely worth doing.

Rooms full of character, nestled in the cave community. Unlike any place I've ever seen. Large rooms with a basic but clean bathroom and a full kitchen, stocked with fruit, coffee, snacks, charcuterie and cheese. It appears every accommodation has a small outdoor area as well. Be prepared to walk with your luggage through the small streets for about 5 minutes from the car dropoff to the rooms as these are primarily pedestrian streets. A very good experience with a friendly staff. I would stay here again.

Room was very spacious, well furnished and decorated. Enjoyed staying in such a historic treasure. Staff were very professional and helpful. Would stay again. Drop a pin on your location or it can be a challenge to find your way back to the room. The office is easy to find.

We had booked a junior suite which consisted of an eat-in kitchen, bedroom dressing room/cloakroom and a large bathroom. We also had a nice little terrace. Everything was very lovingly decorated and designed. In the eat-in kitchen everything was included for breakfast the next morning. The reception was very friendly and warm !!! Since the hotel cannot be reached by car, we recommend using the information provided by the hotel in advance by e-mail. We have our car about 5 km outside housed in a garage for a fee connected with a shuttle service.

Beautiful experience, I slept in the typical Sasso but with all the comforts. The location was excellent for visiting the city (clearly the car must be left in one of the paid car parks). We had a fridge with ham, water, cheese and milk and all the products to make a rich breakfast (biscuits, fruit, jam, bread). Air conditioning which did not need to be accessed despite the scorching temperatures.

Widespread hospitality hotel, in our case we were fortunately assigned a comfortable apartment finely furnished right above the reception, also equipped with a small kitchen with oven, fridge and everything you need to possibly prepare something at home.
Discreet breakfast, although certainly not a full buffet service typical of hotels, is offered fruit, a small part of savory with a packet of cold cuts and cheese (actually it is the amount for one person and not for four), different types of cookies, croissants, jams, rusks, cereals, water, milk etc.
The apartment is strategically located to visit the stones, of course you can not get there by car, the nearest parking (blue stripes) is 10 min. walk.
Very noisy location as its own on the main street Via Fiorentini and the windows are not soundproofed at all, also on a couple of them there are also no doors so in the morning comes a lot of light, organize yourself if these situations bother you with earplugs and eye masks.
Wi-fi in structure present.
Very kind staff ready to give any kind of information, to recommend if you are looking for a structure in the center, less if you are looking for tranquility and comfort to arrive with luggage.

Comfortable and fascinating cave rooms in the heart of the Sassi, and friendly staff with great customer service. My husband and I stayed at a Superior Double Room in Hotel San Giorgio recently at the recommendation of American friends who had previously stayed there. We loved our stay! The room was a huge cave with a wine cellar below. Bed was comfortable and location was perfect. We loved actually having a big jacuzzi tub! I’ve found that sometimes what is advertised as a “jacuzzi” in an Italian hotel is just a slightly larger bathtub, but this was a full, big real jacuzzi! It was very welcome after walking around the Sassi!
Breakfast in the room was great - plenty of choices, including meats, cheese and yogurt for those who want lower carbohydrate choices for breakfast. We enjoyed the fresh Matera bread, olive oil and tomatoes!
My sister stayed in a separate room and also loved her room and the breakfast.
Communication with the hotel was very easy on WhatsApp. They always responded immediately if we had any questions. Valerio and Benny were so friendly and accommodating. We parked at Parking Via Saragat which was a 20 minute walk to the hotel. As the hotel informs you before arrival, you can’t drive into the Sassi area. There are roads which show up on Google maps, but their use is strictly reserved for residents, taxis and buses. When we checked out of the hotel, we caught the Sassi bus line just 25 feet away from the hotel reception and rode it to the Saragat stop right next to the garage.

Dear Leslie, we are so happy that you chose Hotel San Giorgio for your stay in Matera and that you had such a pleasant stay in the Bifora and Chimera Suites, appreciating their services and comfort. We are also very pleased that you enjoyed the in-room breakfast whose assortment is the result of a long search and selection of local products. We are well aware that you have faced a long journey to come to Matera but we still hope that one day or another you will come back and be our guests again. An affectionate greeting Benny e Valerio

Beware STEEP FINE for driving to this hotel's entrance during wrong hours! We were ticketed $52 US through our car rental for entering a "zona traffico limitado... 10,00 to 20,30... controllo elletronico ZTL." We had no idea this area was restricted and only later walked back up the hill to see some signage, which hadn't been obvious to us, as we'd negotiated the turn into the street in heavy traffic. Even if we'd seen the signs, we hadn't yet seen a ZTL in Italy and didn't realize there'd be consequences.
Hotel didn't adequately warn us, until we were there to register, at which point they told us we'd likely be fined €200 for driving down this street. Confirmation email had suggested places we might park, but didn't mention that we shouldn't drive there during certain hours - should be stated clearly! We are relieved now that it turned out to be just 1/4 of that amount, but we were very upset for the first few hours of our visit to Matera.
The hotel didn't offer us any help at all financially. Matera is lovely, but we didn't feel especially welcomed by the city or by the hotel. Be careful!

Dear Guest, We have exchanged several e-mails regarding your transit in the ZTL and we have tried in every way to help you by contacting the local police office in charge both by telephone and by mail, but unfortunately we have been unable to do anything to avoid you the fine. On the other hand, in the confirmation email that we sent you it is expressly written: " Since we are inside the ZTL (limited traffic area Sassi), entering the Sassi by car won't be possible." In addition to the precise indication that it is not possible to travel by car, we indicate to guests all the possible parking solutions with the relative possibility of transferring from the car parks to the Hotel. We are sorry that you have received a fine but we are in no way responsible for this. We regret that you have attributed your oversight to the Hotel, penalizing it with a review that we believe is unfair. Sincerely Alessandra

We received messages welcoming us just before we were due to arrive and sent another one letting us know when our room was ready. The staff were welcoming and friendly and gave us options for which room we wanted, which was a very nice touch. There was a lovely assortment of meat, cheeses, tomatoes, bread, cereal, and other items for breakfast stocked each morning in our room. The rooms were within an easy walk to all the major attractions that we wanted to see. Be advised that there is a lot of uphill and downhill walking throughout the city, s wear comfortable shoes. Overall, we could not have been happier with our time at the Residence Hotel San Giorgio.

Hi. I apologize for not answering sooner - I just saw this. When we arrived we unpacked our suitcases and were told we could either drive and park the car ourselves and walk back to the hotel or someone would pick up the car for us and then deliver it to us on the day we leave for a very small fee. We chose to that and were very happy we did. They picked up the car promptly and delivered it exactly when we needed it. We did not stay in a cave room, but had a wonderful apartment instead. One bed in bedroom and perhaps a pullout bed in sofa, but not sure because we didn't need it. Wonderful place to stay!! I hope this helps.
