Detailed Reviews
The rooms are old caves modified to hotel standards and are quaint but comfortable with a small fridge, Sky TV (little in English) and reasonable AC. We enjoyed four nights with friends in Matera. The hotel is well placed, surrounded by restaurants in the heart of the 'Sassi' - Old Town.
There are tables and chairs outside the 'Hobbit' style rooms to enjoy an al fresco breakfast or late night drink. There is no bar and reception is closed by 10pm, so you will need to be prepared with beers and drinks.
Some reception staff only speak Italian or very limited English.
There is no parking at the hotel or for non Matera residents in the Sassi. We found parking at 'Damascus Parking' (details provided by the hotel), was reasonable at 20 Euros per day with a shuttle to and from the hotel. Be sure to organise your return shuttle in good time especially if leaving early.
The rooms have a portable dehumidifier which would be well advised to use. If you are not familiar with these boxes on wheels ask the hotel to explain.
The access to the hotel and all of the old town is by steps and a labyrinth of paths which are smooth and can be slippery. We advise god trainers rather than flip flops for getting around.
We found Matera a charming adventure built in a higgeldy piggeldy warren that is firmly focused on tourism. Three days are more than enough, more would be stretching everything on offer.

The ancient part of Matera is divided into two distinct archaeological areas: the sasso Caveoso and the sasso Barisano.
The hotel is located in the area of the sasso Caveoso, near St. Peter's Square from which you can enjoy a spectacular view of both the valley of Gravina and the beautiful rock church of the Madonna de Idris overlooking the ancient mansions.
We got a room with a terrace on the first floor with stunning views.
The room is spacious , bright and well ventilated with two windows beyond the door overlooking the terrace.
Perfect decor, cleanliness at the top.
Very recent bathroom, located on the ground floor.
The staff is very helpful and very efficient.
Breakfast, served in the room at no extra charge, is of excellent quality and very plentiful.
A dream place, unique in the world, that we will never forget and that we promised to return as soon as possible.
During our 4-day stay we were lucky enough to be accompanied by an exceptional Guide: Liborio Nicoletti, a native scholar of Matera, who has been able to transfer to us, with great professionalism, the evolution of Matera civilization, from the Paleolithic to today I walk the streets and visiting the most important houses and monuments.

We stayed in this hotel for two nights to visit Matera. Truly excellent welcome and accommodation. Friendly and extremely helpful staff. The only small note is on the breakfast which we chose to eat in the hall even though room service was free. We thought we would find a nice buffet, as usually happens, but instead table service was a bit modest in quantity and very slow

The room was not at all consistent with the photos. Very expensive room for one night (180 euros). There was an automatic light in the stairs that we couldn’t control and that turned on several times very early in the morning and lit up our entire room. Noisy room it felt like sharing the room with a family.
Breakfast bad and very noisy.
Unkind staff not smiling we felt disturbed.

We stayed in the Junior Suite- Cave, which had a queen and twin bed. It was very roomy and quiet and a very unique place to stay. We were very comfortable, and we appreciated the terrific breakfast in the morning. The staff were very helpful and the person at the front desk coordinated with our cab driver when the road suddenly closed due to a movie being filmed outside. I would definitely recommend a visit to Matera, a visit to the museum that explains the history of this city, a walk around at night, and of course a stay at this hotel. There are a lot of steps in Matera and also some in the room we stayed in.

I had planned to visit Matera long before the city was popularised by the latest James Bond film and picked the Caveoso Hotel because of its caves and location. I arrived early and got an early check in on a very hot day. Had a lovely cool room. Breakfast I ate on the patio. Just a great city and lovely hotel.

Found the hotel by chance on the internet. Called and Mr Francesco was not only extremely professional but also very kind and friendly. Located in the center of Matera with a breathtaking view, a stone's throw from everything... or rather just a stone's throw away!! In the evening we had a small problem (ours, not the structure's) and the Manager Francesco always did his utmost to help us, telephone and satisfy us with all the requests made. Highly recommended and we will definitely return. Well done!!!... I forgot, breakfast in the room (included in the price and without extras)spectacular.

Matera is beautiful, so everything is a side dish. Having said this, I gave this weekend to my husband for his birthday because we had never been to Matera. I booked this hotel for its particularity, choosing the room in the stones. Very nice and clean room. The "negative" things I found were:
-The bed was quite uncomfortable, in fact I woke up often during the night.
- the continuous noise of the dehumidifier even during the night, which for heaven's sake is useful and we can't say anything about it, but replacing it with a quieter one wouldn't be a bad thing.
- breakfast, which I expected to be richer and with a buffet.
Small things that make the difference. For the rest everything is ok, the hotel is in an excellent location and the staff is friendly and helpful. Would I go back? Yes but I would choose a normal room

I loved everything
Everything was clean and tidy.
The breakfast was excellent and absolutely pleasant that you could even have it in your room.
There is also wi fi which is always appreciated even if it doesn't work very well in the rooms

Location and room were super. Breakfast….. you need to order the evening before and it was then laid out on a table, covered with paper. You sit at your room number table and coffee is served - but only what you ordered. If you want anything different or extra….. this was an issue and certainly not encouraged.
Room was lovely, with small balcony and great view. Receptionist was lovely and helpful, but the man at breakfast and checkout was unfriendly and could easily put people off coming back!!
You do need to be able to use steps and to really enjoy the fabulous city, be pretty fit.

The hotel, as far as I know, has none. There are car parks available in Matera.
My wife said exactly the same before we went, but we were presently surprised When we arrived the room was warm not damp. The A/c was efficient but leaked, we complained ant it got fixed. There was no running damp off the walls etc.
Book it - enjoy your stay. Rooms 1 and 10 are recommended.
We parked our car just outside the hotel and then they take the car away and park it securely for you .
Salve,
non abbiamo avuto problemi con la macchina, anche se il parcheggio non è proprio all'interno dell'albergo ma ci si arriva molto vicino.
