Need to be careful with your choice of rooms as standard double at two level it sound quite exciting initially , but is dangerous a hole/drop to the toilets in to the ground floor tray to do it at four o'clock am on the dark i nearly kill myself very stiff and not enough safety handles to get in or dawn i am 71 quite fit but i struggle , we request change rooms at the cost of 30€ per night ,so we did so the one level a lot better , rooms lack of coffee/tea facilities ,very small tv 17" , continental breakfast only .
Staff very helpful and pleasant
We had a driver bring us here from the airport and had to walk about 5 minutes up a lot of stairs from the closest street with car traffic since the hotel is located in a pedestrian only street. If you have a lot of luggage you will definitely want some help! Pro tip: sturdy shoes with good grip is essential in this old part of Matera.
We booked the room with the jacuzzi and private terrace and the views were truly spectacular. For reference, we stayed for two nights and walked all around both districts of the Sassi and even had a walking tour - so we visited all the best viewing points and we STILL felt the view from our room was one to be rivaled. At night, with the lights on the city looked truly magical. The room itself has also been tastefully renovated, maintaining its original character and history while adding modern finishes.
Note, if you have mobility issues especially with stairs - this might not be the best room for you since you have to go up stairs within the room to reach the jacuzzi and the terrace. But if no issues, then definitely get this room! Only small con for us was you could hear the noise from reception but this wasn’t a big deal for us since we were often out all day and by nightfall everything was quieter. I also want to note that I believe due to a jacuzzi being in the room, especially if used, the room retains a slight humidity even with the AC on.
The hotel has beautiful relaxing instrumental music which you can turn on in your room, I found this to be a very nice touch!
Location of the hotel was near a few more local-feeling restaurants (compared to the ones on the busier street with all the businesses) and was a short walk to some attractions like museums. Keep in mind you will probably get lost many times at first — google maps was not updating in real time as we walked but part of the adventure is getting lost in these old streets!
Breakfast was delicious as well and the staff were very kind. I will be recommending this hotel to family and friends!
The hot tub is a lovely addition to the second floor. The hotel provides salts, robes and slippers. The hot tub is also a bath so you fill it yourself and therefore no chlorine etc.
The room was well laid out and decorated - very in keeping with the style. It had a minibar for drinks. The room does have a hairdryer.
The one downside of the room is that whilst there is some air con and a dehumidifier, I was unaware from the reviews what to expect from staying in a cave hotel. From this experience and a tour I did whilst in Matera, the caves do not have great ventilation and thus there was a stuffiness to the room. This didn’t bother me the first day but the second and third I noticed my clothes felt damp as did the bedding. This is perhaps different in the colder months we temperatures were high in July. This is not a criticism of the hotel but perhaps more ignorance on my part as I didn’t know to expect this.
The hotel provides breakfast for the guests which is mostly cold - breads, cheese, meat, fruit, cereal and pastries but they did also have eggs and bacon available.
We parked in Damasco carpark which is handy and central. Don’t trust the first route suggested on the Apple Maps however because there was a more direct route with less steps involved! As in all of Matera and particularly for the view you will need to walk a lot of steps. The hotel organised a porter to help us with our bags on the way back which we were very appreciative of.
Overall I would recommend the hotel provided you take note about the room humidity!
Very convenient location for walking to the center and the affiliated secure car park (6 min walk, but the steps are inconvenient if you have heavy luggage).
Good breakfast but in my opinion the quality of the products offered could be improved.
We stayed in the relaxation room (1002) located on two floors, the staircase to reach the upper floor where the bed is located was a bit awkward.
I can't explain the reason but on one of the two nights the humidity released by the stones (walls and ceiling) was not very pleasant; perhaps it is time to organize yourself with dehumidification systems to be activated during the day.
The city (Matera) is well liked. But the room certainly isn't.
- at check-in, photos of your passport are taken and stored in Google photos on the employee's phone.
- nothing has been done with the fact that it was our honeymoon. No warm words, no bottle of wine, nothing.
- the room was very hot and humid and not getting better.
- of the 2 air conditioning units in the room, 1 was broken.
- clothes, bed linen and towels were dampened by themselves in the room.
- lots of dirt and mold of various colors and thick layers of fabric everywhere, see photos.
- in the room was a loose dehumidifier. This one had a 3L reservoir that filled up every few hours. Nothing was said about it, but we have always emptied it ourselves. Something tells us this is never normally done.
- the breakfast was the least extensive of the whole trip and at 9 o'clock many things were already up despite not being crowded.
- hardly slept in the nights because of the heat and humidity.
- several protruding screws on the floor at the sauna where my wife hurt herself.
- there were several speakers for radio in the rooms (also under the mold). Most of them didn't work.
- dirt and hair of previous users in the sauna.
- in a layer of dust there was another pack of Marlboro under the window and in the shower was a bottle of shampoo.
- at check-out the voucher with the price was immediately placed on the counter and asked 'pay by card?'. There was no question whether the stay was satisfactory.
For this money, it was a very mediocre and unhealthy experience that has long been true from the thickness of the layers of fabric. Apparently, the customers are coming anyway.
