My wife and I spent five nights at the Hotel Santa Maria in June and thoroughly enjoyed our stay. The hotel is perfectly situated just a bit off the beaten path in a fun but not aggressive nightlife area, yet convenient to the major sites...More
Everything about this hotel was special. From the moment we arrived through the gates we were well tended to by a very accommodating and friendly staff. Extra kudos to Norman and Conrad, who were so delightful at breakfast and happy hour. Breakfasts are sumptuous with...More
A very pleasant hotel. Helpful staff. Relaxing, comfortable, and quite. A very good breakfast and delicious Happy hour appetizers. The Santa Maria is located in a very vibrant neighborhood within walking distance of the Forum. Everything a quality hotel in Rome needs ro be.
This hotel was beautiful! A great location outside the busy streets of Rome, but close enough to walk to all the attractions (the No. 8 Tram can also help if you're feeling a bit tired). So many great restaurants close by - and reasonably priced....More

Trastevere ("beyond the Tiber") is like a faded postcard, a little worn around the edges but still charming. With its wide-open piazzas, meandering streets, weathered Renaissance buildings, and overgrown personality, it's become an irresistible mecca for visitors. Trastevere is an enclave of entertainment - a rotating set of street performers entertains almost every night, and unforgettable
eateries and bars pepper its piazzas and side streets. For a trip to the past, visit the southern and western flanks of Trastevere for pockets of yesteryear, less traversed areas with a residual 1960s and 70s Roman vibe.

Yes there is a lot of graffiti and that would tend to put me off too. However, graffiti is widespread through Rome and we found the area felt safe. The hotel is enclosed by a wall and was a pleasant oasis within a bustling city. There were plenty of good places to eat and drink nearby plus you're only over the river from many of the attractions.
I hope this helps.
