The taxi from Termini couldn't find the hotel but after asking around the Piazza di Santa Maria, we found our way to it quite easily. Other reviews have used the term "oasis" and that is quite accurate. The breakfast was a cut above the typical...More
My wife and I spent 4 delightful nights in this beautiful oasis. We got off to a terrible start in that the airline lost our luggage but the staff at the hotel made every effort to ensure that it was eventually located and delivered to...More
This is truly a unique, wonderful gem in the middle of Trastevere! It is quiet and very quaint. The rooms are perfect for a respite and the windows open directly to a lovely courtyard. It is a renovated monestary, so you must keep that in...More
An oasis close by the boisterous Piazza Santa Maria in Trastevere. Clean, quiet, perfect service; breakfast included as is food at tea/cocktail hour. Could not have been more pleased. Medium price, the Hotel Santa Maria is well located for sightseeing in the historic center of...More
The first time in Roma - the best hotel we could choose.
A nice and one of a most romatic place for a hotel we could find in a capital city. Coming back from large walks through a facinating town, crowded with tourists, we found...More

Trastevere ("beyond the Tiber") is like a faded postcard, a little worn around the edges but still charming. With its wide-open piazzas, meandering streets, weathered Renaissance buildings, and overgrown personality, it's become an irresistible mecca for visitors. Trastevere is an enclave of entertainment - a rotating set of street performers entertains almost every night, and unforgettable
eateries and bars pepper its piazzas and side streets. For a trip to the past, visit the southern and western flanks of Trastevere for pockets of yesteryear, less traversed areas with a residual 1960s and 70s Roman vibe.

Yes there is a lot of graffiti and that would tend to put me off too. However, graffiti is widespread through Rome and we found the area felt safe. The hotel is enclosed by a wall and was a pleasant oasis within a bustling city. There were plenty of good places to eat and drink nearby plus you're only over the river from many of the attractions.
I hope this helps.
