Sadly disappointed. Travelled for business and stayed 2 nights. They have invested in the communal area downstairs but not in the rooms. The rooms are old and dated. There is no free water in the room and no iron. The sheets also leave white marks on dark clothes. They charge you to use an iron which is burnt if you need it longer than 30 minutes.
If you’re arriving by train then the location couldn’t be better - immediately opposite the station. Despite this it’s still a good location for seeing a lot of the main sights in the city and while awfully busy in the area outside, inside is calm and tranquil! Checking in was quick and pleasant with a very friendly member of staff happy to engage in conversation. Having had a rather painful journey to get there it was a delight to have my reservation swapped to a suite, which if available when booking I’d highly recommend. There’s a number of lifts which serve all the floors very quickly. The room was on the fourth floor and was very spacious. The bed was massive and exceptionally comfortable, the sofa a delight to relax on and there was plenty of storage throughout, including within the unit on which the TV sat, although this itself wasn’t as large as you’d expect for the room. There was loads of lighting throughout the room with lots of different settings, which helped make the room brilliantly cosy. Plugs at both sides of the bed, stocked mini bar and hifi unit, arm chair and coffee table plus machine meant an extended stay here would be perfectly comfortable. The air-conditioning wasn’t great unfortunately and while the curtains were only decorative, the blackout blind behind was very effective. No noise from outside or the corridors made for a great night’s sleep! The bathroom was equally as spacious as the main area and everywhere was very clean. The toiletries were provided in small bottles with a hair dryer mounted on the wall, but surprisingly there was no magnifying vanity mirror. The shower was above the bath with separate toiletries, and it was powerful and nice to use. While I didn’t have an opportunity to use the bar or restaurant, the main lobby area is lovely with plenty of place to sit and relax, either alone or in groups, and gives for great first impressions when you arrive. Checking out was seamless, however having left my luggage for a few hours it proved slightly more complicated retrieving it, since only a limited number of staff members appear to have access to the room. More secure perhaps, but if you’re in a rush make sure to leave enough time for this! Overall I had a brilliant stay here and I would happily return again, especially if it was for a lengthy duration - highly recommended!…
The staff are excellent - everyone helpful, professional and friendly. Our room, 625 on 6th floor, was a Superior Double and so was spacious, with a huge comfortable bed and lovely pillows, good shower, small fridge (mini bar) and kettle. Being a cold week in December, we were very grateful that the room was really warm and welcoming to return to. Towels were changed every day if requested. The breakfast was very good. The train station is over the road and most places to visit were within an easy walk.
My wife and I stayed 3 nights at the Starhotels Excelsior in Bologna, Italy prior to a Mediterranean cruise. My wife actually found this gem, and we were very pleasantly surprised. Across the Piazza from the hotel is Bologna's central train station, which makes traveling easy. We took the train one day to Venice for the day, and also rode the train to Ravenna, which is where the cruise port is. The hotel staff was excellent, and everyone we encountered spoke English. Our room was quite nice, very clean, and surprisingly spacious. From the hotel, it is an easy walk to numerous restaurants, cafes, shops, and tourist attractions. We never felt unsafe anywhere we went in Bologna, and the locals are extremely friendly. Should we book another Mediterranean cruise, we would use Bologna as our "hub" again, and I would not hesitate to stay at the Starhotels Excelsior again.…
Booked last minute and staff were so accommodating. Asked for ice in my room and it was there instantly. Location is right by the station and you can leave your bags before/after check out which is really useful. They will even bring your bags up to the room. Beds super comfortable and having a bath after days of hostel life was welcome!!
Room and bathroom were a good size. Bed was comfortable. Despite hotel being busy, pleasantly surprised by minimal interior noise. Staff very friendly and helpful. Breakfast was extremely busy, and food was poor quality. Wish we hadn’t included it in the booking and eaten out instead. Shocked to discover it was 12 Euros per person if added after booking. Not value for money at all. Hotel really convenient for train station, however this area of Bologna is not pleasant.
The Starhotel Excelsior is located directly across the street from the central train station, thus is very convenient for those arriving to Bologna by rail. It is also very easy to come in by car without having to battle the traffic of central Bologna and parking is very easy. The hotel is a 15 minute walk to the central square. The walk is pleasant day or night on streets lined with shops and restaurants. The area around central station is lively at any time and feels reasonably safe. The hotel itself is quite modern. Rooms are large and quiet despite its proximity to the bustle of the train station. The quality of the rooms and service is extremely good for the price.
This is an excellent hotel: businesslike, sleek look and our room was spacious and neat. The check-in was very friendly (although a bit on the slow side), and the breakfast buffet was -certainly by Italian standards- very extensive and of excellent quality. The location of the hotel is good too, especially for train travelers, as it is right opposite the station. There were some unsavory people hanging around in the area between the station and the hotel entrance in the evening, but that didn't bother us. The hotel is not too far from the city centre either. We will definitely come back here if we ever visit Bologna again!
Great modern hotel with perfect location and parking (for extra charges). worth considering, highly recommended for couples or business. walking distance to centre of the city and two Towers. Staff is very friendly and helpful rooms are spacious with a great view
