Alla Porta Rossa was my favorite hotel of the four I stayed in while in Italy. I stayed in one of the rooms (not apartments, although they looked wonderful too). It had a small balcony with a view of the sea, was nicely decorated and had a beautiful bathroom. Checkin is not like a normal front desk checkin, you will need to coordinate your arrival time. Barbara was very patient and accommodating during my pre-arrival emails and phone calls. It is a little bit of a walk up the hill and as mentioned in another review, there were little old Italian ladies that sat outside the building talking and sewing, everyday. It was absolutely perfect. I do wish that they provided breakfast, but there were a few snacks in the room and very good chocolates on the pillow when I arrived.

My husband and I flew last July to Milano, from where we took the train to Manarola (about 20 € one way). We stayed in Alla Porta Rossa for four nights. We would have liked to book an apartment, but since they required a minimum of 5 nights stay , we booked one of their rooms, as we couldn´t change our flight tickets. We had a room with a window to the sea and a balcony (we recommend this instead of the room next door). The room was quite basic, clean, and small, as was the balcony. However, we were happy to even get a room with such short notice, and considering that we were in the room only for the nights (sleeping), we didn´t mind. It is quite an easy walk up to Alla Porta Rossa reception from the train station. It is a quiet area, where you will have the local ladies

The Alla Porta Rossa was picturesque to start. The owners did not speak much english but we worked through. The room was ideal with balcony, and the other guest were great. But then went out for the day trip to the beach and was robbed of all that mattered most to me, my wedding ring and other jewelry by the maid that cleaned our room. Te only one with a key. The owners wanted us to down play the theft & called the maid to our room that same day, told us not to call the police but leave it to them. Not wise on our part! Needless to say we filled police report in Riomaggiore a day late & a dollar short. I will never see my wedding ring again! Olga (the maid) did not win the victory because God blessed me with another one! But, beware never carry or wear valuables we

We stayed here for4 nights - my husband & my parents - in October 2006. Although the apartment was small (we had been warned by the owners that this was the case), it worked wonderfully for us. The balcony/terrace basically almost doubled the size of the apartment. The weather was perfect and we spent a lot of our time relaxing out there. The view was amazing. We enjoyed hiking to each of the villages, buying fish & vegetables in the village, and just truly relaxing. The owners are wonderful people - very helpful and very kind. I hope to return again someday. Manarola was a great choice for us.

We booked an apartment in early October with Alla Porta Rossa via email. Barbara and Laudina were prompt to reply and booking was quite simple. The apartment proved to be even better than we had hoped, and everything was at least as nice as described. Apartment was in immaculate condition, in the heart of Manarola. Our unit, Blue Mare, featured a good sized kitchen, small second bedroom suitable for a third person, and a truly lovely terrace with Manarola spread out before you. Barbara and her family members as well as Laudina were extremely friendly and helpful. There is a nice Co-op grocery near the top of the main street on the left as you go up the street. Be sure to try the focacceria for a tasty lunch snack.

We stayed in Scaglie di Mare for 5 days of our honeymoon in May 2006 and it was lovely. The apartment was smaller than I'd imagined it to be but it's adorable and beautiful, and it's really cleverly arranged with virtually everything you could need tucked away in convenient places. It even has a washing machine and dishwasher! You can easily self-cater if you want, with the fresh pasta, flavoursome vegetables and fragrant herbs from the village (though essentials like oil and salt etc weren’t provided so we had to buy entire packs for our 5 days), and there are nice restaurants in the village too, like Piccola Marina. The view is beautiful, and we spent lots of time just looking at the village below and the beautiful sea and sky from the balcony. Three things to bear in mind are

I arranged to book Apartment A La Marina for a reunion holiday (second honeymoon) for myself and my husband and another couple who are great friends of ours to celebrate our mutual 25th wedding anniversaries. It seemed perfect as the description on the net is for a large apartment with 2 bedrooms and a large sitting room. First of all there are many positives about this apartment, the family who own it are undoubtedly friendly and genuine. The position in Manarola is great- right in the centre- and the steps to the apartment are not impossible and the apartment itself is very spacious. However the key problem here hit us immediately-the second bedroom not only lacked a door but was completely without a wall -opening up directly onto the hall-which was not very comfortable for

My wife and I just returned from a trip throughout Italy. Our stay at Alla Porta Rossa was unquestionably the highlight. We were greeted by Barbara and Laudina as though we were old friends. They are the warmest, accomodating and friendliest owners we have met. They could not do enough for us. The room was very clean and offered a great view of the sea. At the end of our travel day, we enjoyed wine and cheese on the balcony, just savoring that great view. The location was ideal, with an easy walk to the next village, Riomaggiore, by way of Via Dell'Amore (Love's Way), as well as to the town's center. I highly recommend Alla Porta Rossa to anyone traveling to Cinque Terra. It would be a small sin to miss it. Bill and Sandie Roccia Toledo, Ohio USA

We stayed in Cinque Terre for 4 days. I recommend that this is a good amount of time 3-4 days is what is needed. The room was fantastic, not too small for a romantic couple, it was completely newly fitted and the bathroom was divine by any standards not just europe, mind you it was the best we stayed in across, France Italy japan and hongkong by far. We were greated with broken english and he was hard to understand with the accent for a french person and and australian person. But he recommended a great restaurant by the sea (the one right on the water sorry can't remember the name) but all the restaurants we tried in this town (3 of them that we went too) were all good. It was the highlight of our euro asian trip.

We stayed in an apartment owned by a woman named Marcella. It seems, the hotel has rooms throughout the village and one person owns and runs each room. They give you a choice of rooms and that was great. Marcella did not speak English, but was very sweet and a great hostess--even meeting us near the train station despite it being very late. Her husband helped us with the bags because it was a hike up the stairs to get there. The room was clean, had hot water and a kitchen area. It also had a couch and table, which was refreshing from the hotels we'd been staying in that just had a bed. We paid her around 200 euros for two nights in cash. The views were lovely, the village was fantastic and it was an amazing trip to Cinque Terre!
