The antique building located on a peak about 300m above the sea and underneath the ruin of the "Castle d'Appio" is a 13th century garrison and enjoys a marvellous view of the Italian "Flower Riviera" and the French "Côte d'AzurUnder the old castle built by Roman Consul Appio Claudio in 185 B.C., in 1967 the hotel and restaurant "La Riserva di Castel d'Appio" was erected on the ruins of the old building which belonged to the same family who today is still the owner and manager of the hotel facility.A refined lounge for the winter restaurant, a flowered terrace along the swimming-pool for dinners in the candlelight, highly recommended is our fish specialities from the best traditional and international dishes. The Genoese, in the Xlll century, rediscovered the position of the castle, rising steeply 300m out of the sea, and almost totally rebuilt it. From the restaurant and the rooms you can enjoy the same magnificent view. The hotel is located between the "Riviera dei Fiori" and the "Côte d'Azur", 18 Km away from both Sanremo and Monte Carlo. To reach it you have to leave the A10 highway at Ventimiglia exit and run 1/2 mile toward the town. Then, after you cross a bridge on the Roya river, you have to turn right toward France. After 400 mt, at the traffic light, turn right and go on for 4 Km.

Detailed Reviews
Stayed here one night after visiting the Hanbury Garden at La Mortola. The hotel is on the top of a crag overlooking the bay, beside the remains of a medieval castle. The place was obviously built some decades ago and is now in parts rather old-fashioned. However it has a proper restaurant which does a mean risotto and a good wine list, and a terrace with a beautiful view, plus a pool. Road access is a bit sinuous-a steady hand on the wheel is needed. Well situated for exploring the area.

I’m currently dreaming of holidays after lockdown, and if there’s one place I’d like to go back to, it’s this hotel . It’s like staying in an Agatha Christie novel ( in terms of old fashioned charm and understated luxury) and the service and views are truly exceptional. The rooms aren’t huge, and it’s a little faded in places, but it’s like somewhere I’ve dreamt of but rarely managed to find.
As many have pointed out , the drive isn’t easy- I’ve had much worse in terms of sheer drops , but it’s quite hard work and a series of blind corners where you hope someone isn’t coming in the opposite direction, and our hire car overheated by the time it got to the top. However, don’t let this put you off( just take any supplies with you as you won’t be nipping out to the shops), as it really is worth it when you get there. Having said that, Ventimiglia old time is surprisingly nice . Not at all touristy but definitely worth an evening stroll.
Overall, the hotel is a really special place , as long as you like somewhere which is unique, a bit quirky and old fashioned in a good way.

+1
My wife and I just stayed at La Riserva in Ventimiglia, Italy and we can’t say enough about how gorgeous the view is and how accommodating the staff was. Both are amazing and well worth it. I think every room has an incredible view of the Mediterranean Sea you will never forget. This friendly, family owned and operated hotel is run beautifully and efficiently. The owner came and picked us up and dropped us off in town more than once because taxi service was limited because of some events going on. This isn’t part of the booking but just him being kind so we didn’t have to wait. We took the train from Nice, France to Ventimiglia and then took a taxi back to Nice. I’d suggest doing that the other way around so you can be taken directly to the property after traveling. Getting taxis can be challenging at certain times. The train was easy and very cheap. Under $10 per person that took around and hour from Nice airport. I paid online. You have to take your luggage about a block from airport to catch train. Again, I would take a car next time to avoid that and the transfer in Ventimiglia. Please stay at this property! We had a very nice suite with 3 outdoor terraces you could sit and drink their delicious cappuccino! The restaurant is very nice and delicious also with that amazing view. They even accommodated our vegetarian diet by adding items to the menu for us the second night we ate there because they remembered. Breakfast is included and delicious. Bravo! Highly recommend. Grazie!

We have been here a few times over the past 10 years and we’re very disappointed. The food has gone down hill and so has the service and property. It is clear they are not re-investing their money to maintain a nice quality. The beds are very hard, staff was not very friendly except for the owner and his daughter. The main things that would bring us back for 1 night would be the spectacular view and the pool is nice.

It was a lovely experience. Hotel and location is outstanding, it was definitely worth going up that frightening "road" and enjoy the wonderful view on the terrasse with a glass of Spumante.
The staff was highly professional, friendly and always had an eye for the detail. Rooms were good, clean and equipped with all amenities you need. A small (very small) minor was the size of the bathroom. But overall I highly recommend this place and when I am in the region, I will definitely book again a room there.

We returned to this family run hotel 6 years after our first visit. The staff and owners are friendly and attentive. This is truly a family place.
We returned to go to the Monaco Grand Prix. The hotel is ideally located 30 minutes train journey to Monaco.
On our return visit we decided to extend our stay to 3 days so that we could relax by the pool.
Yes the road up to the hotel is bit daunting but worth it.
Parking readily available.

It is a charming small hotel in a fabulous position at the top of the hill overlooking the sea. The very friendly family and staff made us most welcome. Our bedroom and balcony had superb views on 3 sides.
A small point - we could have had some softer pillows for the bed. Dinner was good but maybe needed a few minor improvements. I enjoyed meeting the man whose father lived to 111 after having had a glass of Grappa before he went to bed each night!

An amazing 3 star hotel ran by a very service oriented family and their staff! We really enjoyed our stay at this very special place! The view is stunning and something you should experience, and so is the great hospitality and service by the friendly staff. It is definitely worth the trip up the hill! Calm pool area, excellent for families! And don’t miss out on the turtles. 😊

All you could want. Beautiful interior and exterior. Lovely, helpful staff, delicious food. Cooked breakfast as well as continental. A/C, pool, Lovely terraces. Road up is death-defying but we made it, even in the dark. Great for families as has adjoining rooms.

From Monaco, it is only 23 km by car.
The hotel does have a shuttle but I cannot remember how frequently it operates. The hotel owner is very accommodating so I would suggest you ask him directly. If not, a taxi fare won't break the bank. Whitebeard83
