Centrally located hotel in Stresa, lovely lake view from our room, close to shops, ferries etc. That's where the compliments end. There are better hotels in this area, the room was ok, but not really four star, bed firm, not to everyone's taste, but fine for us. The worst part was the three star food, we had half board, but lasted three days before we departed to a fabulous italian restaurant in the square. We did return for the remainder of the week, and it did improve a bit, but very disappointing, prepackaged tasteless food. If food could be described in a colour it would be Beige!. Would return to Stresa, but not the Hotel Astoria

The only reason I give it a 3 is that the service people at the front desk, bar, and the breakfast buffet table were OUTSTANDING, and the hotel is centrally located to old town. HOWEVER, the rooms are hot (they wouldn’t turn on the air conditioning) so the stay was un-pleasant. The beds were hard and although on the fourth floor we had ants. Finally the bathroom is so oddly shaped that the toilet is difficult to sit on and use unless you are a petite person or someone without broad shoulders. If your a plus sized person you’ll find it easier to use the toilet in the basement rather than the one in your room. Would not recommend this place to anyone!

This hotel, while very well situated on the lake front, felt shabby and seriously in need of upgrading. Definitely not meriting 4 stars or providing the value expected for the daily rate being charged! Many of the staff were super friendly and helpful, others much less so. Rooms were small, beds old and hard, furniture tired. Bathroom old fashioned, with cracked walls and without proper showering facility meaning that over 70s had to sit on the edge of the bath and shower as if in a hostel, then clean up the spray afterwards to avoid a slippery, dangerous floor. The food was truly dire! Poorly prepared, unimaginative, tasteless and straight from the prepared freezer packet, this is not what we came to Italy expecting. More akin to the disappointing end of a British school dinner or hospital meal, the 'dining experience' above all, has driven the need to provide this review. The vegetarian in our party was served up with a plate of mashed potato and boiled spinach (see photo below). The rest of us were served with the lowest quality, thinnest sliced and utterly tasteless 'meat' covered in different packet gravies from day to day. Truly abysmal! Breakfast, while ok with an acceptable range of food on offer if you got into breakfast early, was not supplemented or stocked up later on, and was extremely sparse if you arrived after around 9.15 (breakfast was advertised as being served until 10). If you asked for things to be stocked up, you'd be told they'd 'run out'. Not acceptable in a four star (or indeed any) hotel. Would not recommend this hotel.

We are repeat visitors to the Astoria, as usual the room was clean, comfortable and hope to visit next year. It is an excellent location very clean and well managed and the staff are brilliant, particularly the dining room staff who provide a perfect service. If anything could be better it would that tea/coffee facilities were available in the rooms. We have always stayed Dinner, bed and breakfast. and hope to do so again, but this year the main course left a bit to be desired. I hope things improve for our next visit.

My friend and I stayed in a twin room . My friend requested the blue room. It seems you can't select your room. The 1st night we arrived we had dinner In the hotel. We had the set 3 course which was Not nice at all, the pasta was ok 2 nd course was meat with veg . The vegtables were not cooked and the meat didn't taste nice at all. The apple tart was cold and was not home made.It cost 38 Euros no worth it. After that we ate at the local restaurants. The hotel was dated. Some bedrooms were up dated. There was no jacuzzi as advertised only outside in the pool. The pool was new which was nice. The bar man was not that friendly. The waiters were very friendly and helpful. I get the impression this is a family run hotel. So gradually improving it. The bedroom had no kettle, no iron. We took both. There is a fridge so you can store milk. We took tea, coffee and whisky. Amazing view from the bedroom balcony. Lake view is a must.

Really beautiful surroundings, really classy hotel. Convenient location, 5 min. walk to ferry location. Breakfast buffet quite plentiful and varied; evening meals were 4 course and good, esp. desserts. Room 316 was very comfortable, fairly spacious, and included a desk and an armchair. It faced a leafy inner courtyard. Bed was like beds in Europe seem to be--rather stiff. But not too bad. Wish European hotels would discover soft mattress toppers! Bathroom shower worked well, towels were plentiful, but not a lot of room to put out your bathroom stuff. Green lawn in front of hotel provided several seating areas for having drinks while relaxing and watching lake.

We spent three nights at this hotel and found it to be very comfortable, excellent location for visiting the lake and had all the facilities you could need including a pool. The room was very clean and had a big bed. Breakfast was a good selection of hot as well as cold food. Dinner was excellent and reasonably priced. The staff were delightful and couldn’t do enough for us. Being right opposite the ferries it makes Hotel Astoria an excellent, good value place to stay if you want to explore the area.

What a fabulous experience! It looked like the whole of the hotel had been very recently refurbished. The staff were professional and friendly. The room with the breathtaking view over Lake Maggiore was compact but very well appointed. The pool with integral jacuzzi was spotless. The restaurant had views over the lake from all the tables. There was a very good choice of food and the waiters were most helpful especially Sadin who couldn't help you enough. He was attentive, friendly and efficient. The hotel was a very short walk from the town and the water taxis. We had a daily trip on the lake to nearby islands and the other side of the lake. The nearby gardens were exceptional! The hotel was well positioned, comfortable and very well appointed. We would certainly return..

Spent 7 nights in this lovely hotel. Evening meals were 4 course and really nice and breakfast plentiful with great choices, service was good waiter's very friendly. We had a lake facing room which had stunning views but no sun on the balcony, however room was very small, got leg bruises from bumping on end of bed whilst passing it, good shower but bidet behind door so couldn't open door fully. The only negative point I had was the bed, it was so hard and the pillows lumpy. Nice pool area and also roof top to sunbathe. We were supplied with a breakfast pack the morning we left as it was very early which was nice. It is only a 5 minute walk to town which has plenty of resturants but very little shopping. Stunning area, well worth a visit to Isle Isabella, train station 5 minute walk which will take you to Milan.

We stayed 6 nights this August at the Astoria, it was an average stay. The positives, the view from our hotel room was to die for, the breakfast, pool and porters staff were super helpful and friendly, plenty of hanging and cupboard space for clothes, location excellent. We paid over £260 per night for our room. Negatives, the room and bathroom were too small, the toilet was behind the door so you had to walk in, close the door so to get to the toilet. A bit difficult during the night as didn't want to wake husband by putting the light on. There was no room to rest you toilet bag or toiletries in the bathroom. The walls were very so could hear next doors every move, cough, sneeze, toilet flush, baby crying the last 2 nights etc. Rooms could do with an update as dated and carpets a clean. Reception staff pleasant apart from check out. We got our invoice, asked a question, no eye contact what's so ever. Not very helpful man, we paid, said thank you and no acknowledgement AT ALL in fact wasn't interested at all. Thought he was an owner but was told he was an employee. Not good for the company! Let the reception desk down big time. We won't be staying there again. Would rather pay more and stay at the one next door or even further down as they also had entertainment in the evening but not the Astoria. The staff (except this man at reception) made our stay.
