MAGGIORE One can get to Maggiore by train or by road. We took the taxi as we were four and it worked out OK and was less complicated than taking a train. The place we stayed at is Residence La Luna Nel Porto. It is a nice boutique hotel with just about 12 room. It is bang on the lake promenade and the location couldn't be better. We were shown to our rooms quickly even though we arrived early. Neat, well laid out approaches, polite staff, swift check in and we were in. The room we got was like a suite, with a nice large sitting room and attached kitchenette (quite well equipped), a nice bedroom (roomy) with a very good bed, excellent lighting, clean bathroom with all facilities available. There were TVs in the sitting room as well as the bedroom. We didn't watch any as most channels were in Italian. But mentioning it as it may be of value to others. Morning breakfast was decent and well served. We are vegetarians so the hotel took some special care to provide us with some extra fruits, cheese etc. These days we find that breakfast at every hotel has become almost completely of ready-to-serve items. Cereals, breads, fruits, some veggies, baked stuff etc. almost everything is off the shelves and there is almost no provision for something fresh from a kitchen. Saves the buck I guess. Thankfully, there was plenty of fresh juice that could be made right there in the breakfast room! A walk along the promenade is the done thing. We had some rain so couldn't really do that much. Since we came here from Como, the experience was similar although both the Lakes have their own distinct personalities and feel. The three islands in Maggiore is the main thing to do. Can do by local ferry which works out economical but one does need to watch the time. The islands are charming and the gardens of the villa are beautiful too. In fact one of the best things to do is to just sit on the boat and see the various villas and houses that dot the shoreline around the lacs Maggiore. They are all so beautiful that you feel so good at the end of just a boat ride! A must do at Maggiore is a visit to Villa Taranto and its beautiful gardens. You will be blown away by the beauty of the whole place, the flowers and the maintenance of the gardens. Simply out of the world. There are some 80,000 plus flowers that are to be seen there! Laid out in the most incredible manner. Not to be missed. There is a small charge for entry. Allow for a few hours to take a full round of the gardens. Don't rush. This is one of the most beautiful places you will ever visit. This is an incomparable jewel of botany and natural beauty for Italy and the whole world.

Stresa on the west shore of Lago Maggiore ( one hour forom Milan) remains as delightful an area as when I first stayed there 40 years ago. The hotel lends itself not only to a couple of nights but being just one block from the ferry terminal positions it for longer stays. The very large accommodation included a living room area and small kitchenette. The AC worked very well. And the view facing east across Maggiore is picture-perfect. Great staff with helpful front desk attendants. Stresa is a small town, but they have several good restaurants. We did an all day trek by leaving Stresa at 9 AM on a train for Domoddosola, then catching the Cento Valley sightseeing train for a 2 hour trip through gorgoeus valleys and views of the Alps to the Swiss town of Locarno, then catching a 4 PM ferry which made several stops as it navigated Lago Maggiore back to Stresa. Cost was less than €100 for the two of us. Tickets available from the always helpful Tomassucci Travel in Stresa (Luca is the owner). Only caution...Currently, since the ferry only runs on Sundays, the town of Locarno is pretty much closed. Our adivce..Take a tablet loaded with Netflix movies, and the time will pass more quickly. The trip is a '10".

This was an excellent hotel. Wonderful location with polite and helpful staff! They spoke English and that really helped make our visit enjoyable. The breakfast was incredible and the room was comfortable, quiet, and peaceful! We had some water, wine and cookies in the room that showed the hospitality of the staff! The view was perfect from our room! This was the perfect place to end our stay in Italy!

This perfectly located, tiny hotel (12 suites and apartments) made such a difference to our holiday. It's on the edge of the centre of town so it feels removed from the bustle, yet its still only a few minutes' stroll to shops, restaurants and the ferry terminal. We stayed in a"junior suite" (no. 104) which was spacious, clean and well appointed. There was a kitchen at one end (free to use if you stay 5 days or more) and, at the side, an enormous terrace (more than big enough for a café table and chairs, two sun lounge and a double hammock) which looked right over the lake and was a beautiful, secluded place to relax. Not all suites have such a large terrace but all have balconies, and there is a beatiful grassed terrace outside the breakfast room and bar with tables and chairs as well as hammocks, so there are plenty of options. The little bar can provide coffee and drinks and the staff are friendly and helpful. There is also a laundry for use of guests, free of charge. It's a lovely place to stay and added immensely to the enjoyment of our holiday.

What a beautiful setting! The staff were very polite and professional and the property is so lovely. This was a special night for our family so we splurged on the Lake View Suite @ €340 - Room 311 - gorgeous!! and spacious. Staff left us some snacks and a bottle of wine. Very close to shops & restaurants. We were able to park just down the street. We skipped the breakfast, although the setting looked beautiful - went to "il Gigi bar" just up the street for croissants and coffee (€8,70 for three of us). I want to go back!

Nice apartment-room with nice view on small balcony. Somewhat limited breakfast for the price price, needs attention. Excellent service of enthusiastic staff. Rooms clean but sometimes under equipped. We will be back! Plenty of restaurants within walking distance, parking availble at walking distance.

We visited Stresa for the very first time and knew we wanted to make it a special trip so we made a reservation at La Luna Nel Porto, mostly because of the great reviews and pictures we had seen online. This hotel not only met the expectations we had but completely surpassed them! The view of the lake and mountains from the room is fantastic, the location of the hotel could not be more convenient and central, the staff at the hotel absolutely went above and beyond to welcome us and be thoughtful and caring (they even went as far as to surprise us with a cake when they heard we were celebrating a birthday!) and the room we stayed in was so spacious and clean, perfect for our family of 4! The bedroom area was separated from the living room, excellent bonus. Our room also had the private garden space that absolutely added to our experience here! The main street is close but the elevated location made it surprisingly quiet. We cannot wait to return to Stresa and specifically to this hotel!
