Not a good hotel for safety or smell. As soon as we walked in there was a prominent sewerage smell in the front foyer. The smell was not as strong in the room but was still very unpleasant. The doors were old and not sturdy and would be very easy to break into and the front desk rarely had a...

This is a no-frills, slightly worn & dated hotel in a decent location in the Grand Canal, and the price reflects that. If you need somewhere to serve simply as a base for exploration, it's fine. WiFi is paid for but you can get a drink at Burger King 5 minutes away if you're desperate for free internet. Breakfast was...

We booked as part of a travel agency deal. The price did not raise expectations but the pictures on the hotel website convinced us that we had secured a gem of a bargain. The pictures painted a better image. It is not a five star luxury hotel. It is functional. The room was clean and ok, but basic. It had...

The best thing is the location from the Cruise port and the Train station. The outside is really in need of attention. Inside dark and dreary! Must cross 2 foot bridges with steps to get there. Men who offer to help you with luggage will expect to be paid! But after the first bridge it was worth it to pay...

This is good place to stay in Venice. Very close to main station and next to canal.breakfast served is nice. Reception was very helpful with any questions about local. No lift so need to carry the luggage to your room through small staircase.

Stayed for 5 nights and paid for breakfast but we on;y had it once because it wasn't nice at all. The beds were sort of comfy but had the odd spring sticking out. Tiny room which was very dark as we had a view of a sewage pipe, blocking out any light. The bathroom was ok, but broken shower and...

I booked though booking, com a 3 stars hotel in Venice for a family trip. From the photos was looking quite nice and reasonable. Our experience was not good instead, the hotel is poorly maintained and not very clean, see photos and judge yourself. Instead front desk is very helpful and charming and breakfast is ok but does not reflect the...

Location was tops - just across the canal from the train station, but that was about it. The staff were rude and talked for about 10mins while we waited to be checked in between themselves. The lobby smelt a bit off too.. No lift, which sucks in general, but you get over it after 2 months of doing that anyway!...

Staying in Santa Croce

Neighbourhood Profile
Santa Croce
Santa Croce gained importance as a sestiere (district) when Piazzale Roma was created in the 1930s to bring cars and buses close to the center of Venice. Constitution Bridge spans the Grand Canal linking Piazzale Roma to the train station. This area buzzes with energy from travelers and students. Historic palaces and former industrial buildings house some departments of Ca' Foscari and IUAV Architecture universities. On the Fondaco dei Turchi, Venice's Museum of Natural History offers Venetians prehistoric thrills, plus an overview of lagoon fish and wildlife. The Grand Canal, northern boundary of Santa Croce, is lined with palaces and decorated by the tall green dome of San Simeon Piccolo. Ca' Pesaro attracts Venetians to its contemporary art exhibitions. The Grand Canal exposes only one face of these buildings. On the opposite side, the palace often interacts with a square or a busy street to represent its neighbourhood identity.
