We have stayed in Venice several times. This was a really good hotel, great location (and very easy to get to), lovely rooms, superb breakfast and generally very good service. Couple of minor gripes....one of the concierge staff was not very well informed or helpful, which was a shame as her colleagues were excellent. Also, I find it very frustrating... More

This was the first time that my girlfriend and I had been to Venice. We arrived at Marco Polo by plane and got the Alilaguna water 'bus' to Venice, which for the Papadopoli Hotel was the second stop by boat, took about 40 minutes and cost 27 euro's return each. From the boat stop the walk to the hotel is... More

The public areas of this hotel are sumptuous, beautiful fabrics, lovely statuary. The location is fantastic, sandwiched between a picture perfect canal and a lovely, refreshing garden. It is a short walk from the bus or train stations. The area is typical venice, little shops and cafe's just a short stroll away. On the down side, it was the tiniest... More

Room 428 was above the entrance and had a balcony which overlooked the canal. Very well appointed with everything you could wish for. Good location a bit away from the hustle and bustle, yet close enough to everything. We would definitely book the same room again, loved it.

The hotel was easy to get to from Venezia Santa Lucia train station. The decrepit state of disrepair of Venice is obvious from the minute you cross the Grand Canal. The suite we were stayed in was small and needed an upgrade. A 5-star hotel in Venice (or Italy for that matter) is a 3-star hotel for the rest of... More

We got the bus from Marco Polo International to P. Roma and it was all but a 5 min walk to the hotel. The lobby was stunning and the the staff were effecient in checking us in. It was a terrible shame that WiFi wasn't free as we still wanted to stay connected with our friends and family. We checked... More

I stayed five nights in late May 2012 on a combined business/leisure trip to Venice, a city I have visited numerous times over the past 40 years. A Venetian friend who knows everyone and everywhere in his beloved city strongly recommended the Papadopoli, and I was initially less than enthusiastic because of its location near the Piazzale Roma, where buses,... While on business it was a pleasure to spend two days and a night at the Papadopoli. While my room was a little on the small side and initially felt cramped it was functional with all the usual refinements expected of a hotel at the top end of the market. It even included bath robes which was a nice touch.... More

Just returned from a trip to Venice, which included 3 nights at the Papadopoli. The hotel is beautiful, and the service was exceptional. One of the things that is overlooked is the excellent location, especially for those traveling by train, bus or taxi. It's very close to the Piazzale Roma, which means that you don't have to schlep your luggage... More

My husband and I splurged on this hotel for the last leg of our Europe trip and we were impressed. The hotel is right next to the train station, near a beautiful garden, right on a canal, and near some great local restaurants. We had breakfast included in our rates and it was unbelievable, The staff was efficient and friendly.... More

Staying in Santa Croce

Neighbourhood Profile
Santa Croce
Santa Croce gained importance as a sestiere (district) when Piazzale Roma was created in the 1930s to bring cars and buses close to the center of Venice. Constitution Bridge spans the Grand Canal linking Piazzale Roma to the train station. This area buzzes with energy from travelers and students. Historic palaces and former industrial buildings house some departments of Ca' Foscari and IUAV Architecture universities. On the Fondaco dei Turchi, Venice's Museum of Natural History offers Venetians prehistoric thrills, plus an overview of lagoon fish and wildlife. The Grand Canal, northern boundary of Santa Croce, is lined with palaces and decorated by the tall green dome of San Simeon Piccolo. Ca' Pesaro attracts Venetians to its contemporary art exhibitions. The Grand Canal exposes only one face of these buildings. On the opposite side, the palace often interacts with a square or a busy street to represent its neighbourhood identity.
