We stayed at Hotel Gardena for two nights in September 2016, the first stop of our Italy trip. The first night we arrived we were so dead tired from traveling that all we wanted was a place to lay down, which we got, but the amenities stopped there. Bed wasn't comfortable, shower didn't work frankly at all but a tiny... More

We have stayed at the Gardena a couple of times, it is affordable in an expensive city, it convenient to the train station and the Piazzale Roma, where you can get to the cruise port, the airport, and other places that require wheels. The updated rooms are quite nice, larger than average. The ones that have not been modernized can... More

Rooms on 2nd floor are recently remodeled and well done. First and ground floor rooms have not been remodeled so beware as these are not a good choice. Staff was very accommodating and efficient. Breakfast was boring but adequate.

Great location just 5mins walk from bus and train station so you don't have to drag your cases across Venice! Hotel is very pretty and located on a quiet canal just off the Grand Canal. Very friendly staff and there is a quaint breakfast room with a patio if you like your morning coffee outside. There was a great selection... More

When we arrived by train in Venice on October 21st, we were happy that Hotel Gardena was a 10 minute walk from the station. However, at the Reception we were told that our prepaid, two nights had been cancelled. "By whom? When?" We were dumbfounded. The very unfriendly clerk at first said our travel agent had cancelled. We said that... More

The lobby and breakfast room were lovely and there it stopped! The room was too small for 2 people, one of us had to sit on the bed so the other could walk around. WiFi was weak and up and down. The airconditioning didn't work and we sweltered. The bathroom was falling apart and the shower was a nightmare.

This hotel looks great when you walk in and location is great. Issue is when you get to the rooms things change. Room very tiny, bathroom small and not very clean. T.V. Not working, nightstand hanging loose off wall. Very very disappointing stay for 2 days. Maybe all hotels in Venice are like this, not sure.

Quality / Price relation very good. Staff very kind and always available at every hours. Beautiful hotel, beautiful room, nice view and very comfortable bed. Approved and suggested, for couples mostly.

Very old hotel with tiny rooms which don’t even have a place to sit to use a laptop. The bathroom was not properly maintained and falling apart. The hotel’s Wi-Fi is extremely weak not even allowing sending out e-mails. On the positive side: the breakfast buffet is big and very good with very friendly service. But as a whole not... More

We stayed for three nights in September 2016 - it is a super little hotel, well placed, well staffed and very well appointed. It is a little way down a quiet canal, almost opposite the railway station, so it is an easy walk from the station or the Piazzale Roma (bus station). (One large bridge to cross from the station... Staying in Santa Croce

Neighbourhood Profile
Santa Croce
Santa Croce gained importance as a sestiere (district) when Piazzale Roma was created in the 1930s to bring cars and buses close to the center of Venice. Constitution Bridge spans the Grand Canal linking Piazzale Roma to the train station. This area buzzes with energy from travelers and students. Historic palaces and former industrial buildings house some departments of Ca' Foscari and IUAV Architecture universities. On the Fondaco dei Turchi, Venice's Museum of Natural History offers Venetians prehistoric thrills, plus an overview of lagoon fish and wildlife. The Grand Canal, northern boundary of Santa Croce, is lined with palaces and decorated by the tall green dome of San Simeon Piccolo. Ca' Pesaro attracts Venetians to its contemporary art exhibitions. The Grand Canal exposes only one face of these buildings. On the opposite side, the palace often interacts with a square or a busy street to represent its neighbourhood identity.
