staff was very helpful. breakfast just ok. hotel's restaurant a la carte food was excellent. ~20m3 room was shabby, probably part of the decor, with no view, queen bed composed of two twins and strange towels in bathroom. for 90eu/night out of season its fair.

My wife and I stayed at this nice hotel during a Globus tour we went on last year. The location was great as the front of the hotel was right on the canal. The rooms were clean but a bit on the small side, but we soon found out that most hotel rooms in Italy and France were not as...

Myself and my partner picked this place for a 4 night get away, the website looked great, and the reviews were pretty good. Check in was an efficient, but not very friendly affair, which rather set the tone for the rest of our stay. All of the staff (with the exception of the waiters and waitresses at breakfast) were the...

Have just returned from a weekend in Venice and booked the Hotel Carlton. Arrived at Treviso Airport and got the ATCV coach to Roma Square which took around an hour. The hotel is within walking distance from there. A nice medium sized hotel right near the Ferrovia Waterbus Stop. We booked a double room which leads onto a Courtyard (communal)....

I really enjoyed our stay at the Carlton for three nights. The place is impeccably clean, the staff are clearly well used to being used as a tourist office and the location is fantastic. Can't comment on the restaurant next door but the breakfasts were all very classy, tons of choice served by friendly uniformed staff. I shall definitely stay...

There's no doubt that Venice is a decaying city and unfortunately, that includes the hotels. For Venice, the Carlton was a fine place to stay, but that's not saying much for those of us who are used to American hotels. The hotel is in a very old building and the age shows. The beds are hard as a rock and...

The hotel is pretty, lovely decor and the room and bathroom were very clean. We loved the roof top terrace and the hotel is in a good location near the train station and directly opposite the water bus stop. We didn't have dinner at the hotel but the breakfast was decent. The staff were also very pleasant and helpful.

We stayed at this hotel between Xmas and New Year, for three nights. We spent the first two nights in the rooftop junior terrace, which was fine, the room is clean and tidy, and well furnished, the bathroom was a bit tired, for a suite, but ok otherwise. Pillows on bed were very hard, but changed immediately on request. For...

This was my first trip to Venice and I loved the city, but really did not like this hotel at all. The furnishings were very old and not updated and the rooms were dirty with stained carpeting and questionably clean bedding. There was a very nice breakfast buffet included in the price, which was steep.

Staying in Santa Croce

Neighbourhood Profile
Santa Croce
Santa Croce gained importance as a sestiere (district) when Piazzale Roma was created in the 1930s to bring cars and buses close to the center of Venice. Constitution Bridge spans the Grand Canal linking Piazzale Roma to the train station. This area buzzes with energy from travelers and students. Historic palaces and former industrial buildings house some departments of Ca' Foscari and IUAV Architecture universities. On the Fondaco dei Turchi, Venice's Museum of Natural History offers Venetians prehistoric thrills, plus an overview of lagoon fish and wildlife. The Grand Canal, northern boundary of Santa Croce, is lined with palaces and decorated by the tall green dome of San Simeon Piccolo. Ca' Pesaro attracts Venetians to its contemporary art exhibitions. The Grand Canal exposes only one face of these buildings. On the opposite side, the palace often interacts with a square or a busy street to represent its neighbourhood identity.
