We booked this as it was recommended in The Guardian newspaper. It is a small luxury boutique hotel on a canal side just over a small bridge opposite a nice square. It is a 20 minute walk to the train station and about 10 minutes...More

This is a beautiful place. Clean, inviting, with friendly and helpful staff. Breakfast was delicious and the dining room was just gorgeous. The only issue with this hotel was how to find it. You can't get there from the Rialto Bridge. You basically have to...More

Discover in the gothic walls of Palazzo del Doge Marin Falier, the magic atmosphere of old Venice, where art and history are the expression of an incantation. The hotel rooms, fitted with every comfort and elegantly furnished with original antique pieces, separate shower cubicles, hairdryers, satellite TV, a direct telephone line, Internet WI-FI, air conditioning with individual room control, a safe-deposit box, include a CONTINENTAL buffet breakfast. Cannaregio is the second largest sestiere (district) with its busy Santa Lucia train station. Many transplanted Venetians commute from the outlying areas, “terra firma” to the locals, which is shorthand for any place that is not Venice. Two Grand Canal bridges serve Cannaregio, the newest (Constitution, 2008) still a local hotbed of controversy. Ponte degli Scalzi is a busy link to the train station. Nearby
shops on the Lista di Spagna offer specialties like pastries and coffee that lure Venetians with a down-to-earth attitude. The Ghetto, where the Jewish population was segregated in Cannaregio, has five historic synagogues with an active Jewish community. The Fondamente Nove bustles with foot traffic to the Rialto and San Marco while vaporettos (water taxis) head to Murano and other islands. Side streets lead into quiet picturesque neighbourhoods and palaces like Ca' d'Oro rise directly out of the water.

The Antico Doge is indeed well situated, both with respect to the major attractions and the railway station, all of which we walked to. What is *not* so easy is getting round Venice generally, as it is labyrinthine, and even local Venetians can have trouble directing you, even if you speak fluent Italian, as I do. Certainly one of the great attractions by day and night is the area round St Mark's, which is exquisite. I can't comment on the boats, however, as we ended up walking everywhere.

As the others have said, the staff are very helpful and friendly indeed, and will be glad to store your luggage if the need arises. In fact, I have always found thus to be the case in almost any hotel I've stayed in.
