I am amazed that Archie's is still in business and that it hasn't it been closed down for health issues. When I stayed in 1988 I had to put coins into a machine to get a few minutes of luke warm water for a shower... hopefully that has improved, but it doesn't sound like much else has.

We stayed for one night only and we had experience of true Medieval Venice.Warm running water & kitchen facilities were absent, as well as a proper working reception. Only one bedsheet is provided (you have to pay for the extra one). The bedroom is crawling with mosquitoes with there being no netted windows, and you have to keep them open...

This is probably the cheapest accomodation in the centre of Venice. I didn't mind a concept of a shared bathroom or a super basic equipment of the room. But come on, it was so disgustingly dirty everywhere that it was almost on a brink of being a health risk. The only good thing there is its great location (near a...

Everything is horrible, since you enter until you leave. Don't be mistaken with the images you see because they aren't updated in a while, believe me. We booked for 3 nights, but because we changed our plans we needed to cancel just the last night. The day before we went there I called the hostel and told the owner about...

I stayed in Archie's House for one night, just because I missed the last train to Milan and needed an emergency accomodation on a very tight budget. I paid 21 euro for a place in a 4 bed dorm, with a private bathroom without heating (Venice in november is very cold and humid) and hot water. The only hot shower...

Bar none the worst hostel I have ever stayed in. Everything was extremely dirty - I didn't even want to shower because the bathrooms were so unclean - and the mattresses were INFESTED WITH BED BUGS. I woke up with bites all over me every night, literally was eaten alive and am still scratching days later. There is no heating...

I don't usually make a habit of writing negative reviews but I think the general public need to bed warned about this accommodation. We stayed four days and the one bathroom that is shared between the WHOLE fully booked hostel wasn't cleaned once. I informed a member of staff that there had been blood in the bottom of the toilet...

This is a totally run-down place in need of serious maintenance and proper renovation. The walls are shabby, stairs gloomy, bathrooms unclean. And, also they don't have a kitchen; all they've is a microwave and paper plates and plastic cutlery. However, Archie (the owner) and his folks are nice and friendly, but that alone doesn't offset the price they charge....

It's a bit rough round the edges but we absolutely loved staying here, the staff/Archie's family who run it are unbelievably friendly and accommodating, the house is decorated with a shabby charm. I would recommend this to anyone who wants to feel safe and welcome, and likes ping pong! Unfortunately there isn't many kitchen facilities and maybe that could be...

Luckily we only stayed 1 night in this place and that was out of sheer desperation due to every hostel in the city being fully booked. Only 1 member of staff, whilst he was nice, seemed incapable of managing the whole place by himself. The fact that there's only 1 filthy shower for the entire place is a joke, and...

Staying in Cannaregio

Neighbourhood Profile
Cannaregio
Cannaregio is the second largest sestiere (district) with its busy Santa Lucia train station. Many transplanted Venetians commute from the outlying areas, “terra firma” to the locals, which is shorthand for any place that is not Venice. Two Grand Canal bridges serve Cannaregio, the newest (Constitution, 2008) still a local hotbed of controversy. Ponte degli Scalzi is a busy link to the train station. Nearby shops on the Lista di Spagna offer specialties like pastries and coffee that lure Venetians with a down-to-earth attitude. The Ghetto, where the Jewish population was segregated in Cannaregio, has five historic synagogues with an active Jewish community. The Fondamente Nove bustles with foot traffic to the Rialto and San Marco while vaporettos (water taxis) head to Murano and other islands. Side streets lead into quiet picturesque neighbourhoods and palaces like Ca' d'Oro rise directly out of the water.
