This hotel encapsulated my dream of staying in Venice. Having parked our vehicle at Tronchetta, it was an exhilarating boat ride to the nearest dock to Hotel Ala and literally a two minute walk and we were there. All the rooms our group had were beautifully decorated, had comfortable beds, nice bathrooms, but although each room was the same price,... More

Wonderful breakfast, with lots of choices. Staff was very welcoming and helpful, and fluent in English. Rooms were very clean and well maintained. Perfect location. Just take the number 1 water bus to the water station Giglio stop. 1 block away. Lots of resteraunts and shopping close by.

As the title states, an all around excellent option. The location is great, close enough to popular sites yet also close to back alleyway restaurants and bars. While the rooms are typical European small, they are very clean and function well. Staff were generally friendly and helpful with the only exception being the breakfast staff who appear to dislike their... More

Visited Venice at the beginning of July, and it was everything I'd imagined... Beautiful! This hotel did not let us down. It was well located, charming and clean with a lovely rooftop terrace that can be enjoyed in the sun. The hotel is next to a small narrow canal so when the gondolas go past you can enjoy listening to... More

Getting off the water bus. Wasn't sure how far we would have to walk and after walking a short distance we come to an opening and we were there. Good central location and close to major sites. The breakfast was wonderful and room was cozy and quaint. Very historical area and so many sites to see

My son and his fiance gave my husband and I a 4 night stay,as a birthday present to me. In a city of many bridges, it was a relief to find it was a short walk from St. Giglio where the boat stops, and no bridges! The hotel is very nice indeed, bedroom was very comfortable and well equipped. Breakfast... More

For a decade now I have called Hotel Ala my home base in Venice. Honestly I have never been disappointed or even considered looking elsewhere. I did my search for several years before finding this gem. There's nothing like walking in the door and hearing "welcome back Robert." Yes, that's special!

We have stayed several times at Hotel Ala, and this was the best. I feel they are continually improving the quality of the rooms while maintaining the excellence of the breakfast (included with price of the room). We enjoy the fact that Ala is not so close to San Marco as to be completely "polluted" by waves of tourists, yet... More

Great hotel ... very helpful staff - especially in the bar :) The hotel was ideally placed for this and close enough to St.Marks Square and all other attractions were within walking distance. Breakfast had a lot of choice and the hotel was very clean. Would stay again :)

Staying in San Marco

Neighbourhood Profile
San Marco
The most famous sestiere (district) in Venice has one of the world's most famous squares, St. Mark's (Piazza San Marco). Anchored on one end by the basilica, clustered around it are restaurants, museums, shops, orchestras playing in the square, pigeons, the grand pink Doge’s Palace (Palazzo Ducale), the soaring campanile bell tower, an astrological clock tower, plus gorgeous cafes and restaurants like Florian and Quadri. Piazza San Marco is beloved by Venetians themselves. They book a table anytime, which offers a buffer from the fray. This grand outdoor drawing room attracts Venetians for a stroll too, especially late in the afternoon when the hoards of daytrippers thin out. It's simply a grand place to meet.
