This is a nice hotel, with a good location, that serves a good breakfast. We caught a water taxi from our ship, the driver tried to kick us out at a public platform that was about 500 yards from the hotel. Since we had paid 80 euros for the taxi I insisted on being dropped closer to the hotel. As...

Dear All, thanks for your review. Our private pier with direct access by a small canal is one of our point of strength, gondolas for serenades and tours that accompany our days... See you once again in Venice, Silvia - Customer Care

My second visit to the Hotel Ala was even better--we had a canal view room with seranading gondoliers in the afternoon. Essence of Venice. The Hotel is a short walk with a rollabag from the vaporetto line #1, on a quiet square four blocks from St. Mark's Square. WiFi was 1 euro a day, with two computers available in the...

Hi all ! It's the travelling Joburger reporting about a top stay in Venice: The Best Western Ala Hotel is one of the top stays in Venice! Why? Great value for money (you need this in Venice otherwise you have to top-up the bond on your house online...), top location a few hundred meters from San Marco giving you access...

Myself and my partner stayed here for four nights this week. The location is brilliant for St Marks square and the Grande Canal. There are some good restaurants in the area and you can get a cheaper Gondola than you will when you get closer to the square (was 80 Euro compared to 120 in the day). The hotel was...

My wife and I stayed at Hotel Ala in early May, 2012. and it was a wonderful experience. We were surprised that our room was so large. Bathroom smallish, but certainly adequate. The special treat was that we could look out of our windows right down to a canal where the gondoleers came through every evening about 5, complete with...

My husband and I stayed here for 2 nights and found it a suitable choice for our needs. The staff were professional but not overly friendly and our room was clean and spacious. The bathroom was particularly big for European standards! We really enjoyed heading back to the bar for a few drinks after dinner. The bar tender was always...

This was our Easter Italian break...as usual we wanted the best location to be able to walk to as many attractions as possible. Chose Hotel Ala which proved to be ideal, good value for money too - couldn't fault anything! Splashed out on water taxi from airport (prebooked 100 euros - yes expensive but advantage only took 30 mins)- straight...

Just a few minutes walk from San Marco! This hotel is ideal for visiting Venice. It has its own vaporeto stop (Giglio) on the line one, which makes it very easy to go anywhere. This was the second time we stayed at the Ala hotel, and we would probably stay here again next time we visit Venice. Good value, clean...

I cannot fault anything about this Hotel, the location, friendliness of all staff, superb breakfast, our room overlooked the canal at the rear of the hotel each evening we were serenaded by the Gondoliers as they sailed past, memorable. There were four in our party and no one had any reason for complaint. Congratulations to all at Hotel Ala

Staying in San Marco

Neighbourhood Profile
San Marco
The most famous sestiere (district) in Venice has one of the world's most famous squares, St. Mark's (Piazza San Marco). Anchored on one end by the basilica, clustered around it are restaurants, museums, shops, orchestras playing in the square, pigeons, the grand pink Doge’s Palace (Palazzo Ducale), the soaring campanile bell tower, an astrological clock tower, plus gorgeous cafes and restaurants like Florian and Quadri. Piazza San Marco is beloved by Venetians themselves. They book a table anytime, which offers a buffer from the fray. This grand outdoor drawing room attracts Venetians for a stroll too, especially late in the afternoon when the hoards of daytrippers thin out. It's simply a grand place to meet.
