Stayed for 3 nights at the Mercurio and spent 140 euro a night which I think is inexpensive for its awesome location next to St. Mark's Square. Staff is extremely helpful and very attentive. Getting to the hotel was easy for first timers like me. However, the hotel's website instructs you to disembark at "Station 14, Calle Vallaresso", which is...

We have just returned from Venice having stayed at the Mercurio. This is a very well located hotel, quite literally a five minute walk to San Marco in one direction and Rialto in another. The hotel is spotlessly clean and very comfortable., We had a small twin room with ensuite (walk-in) shower room (newly fitted), and were next to reception...

This is great value for Venice. It is just 5 minute walk from St. Marks square. The staff is very nice, they recommended two very nice restaurants in Venice. The room is small and the bathroom is even smaller, but it is OK for Venice standards. Hotel has breakfast room and the breakfast was adequate. I would stay there again...

We arrived just to find out that they did not have a free room for us, even though we had booked it 2 months in advance. They set us up in a hotel right across the street, which ended up being WAY nicer and we wished we could stay there for the whole trip. Our double room was dirty, smelly,...

I recently completed a two-night stay here during Carnival. Our room was spotless, if just a little on the small side. For location this hotel can't be beat. It's minutes away from San Marco and within easy walking distance to most spots around Venice. Rialto Bridge is about 20 minutes as is Campo Santa Margarita. The staff was super friendly...

I travelled to Venice by myself for a Wednesday through Friday in early November. I had read several reviews stating how great the place was, so I was very excited. I booked my room with them via email, and was impressed with their quick response time. When I asked if the single room had a canal view, they stated that...

I priced rooms all over the city of Venice and was a bit skeptical when I found the Hotel Mercurio offering rooms for 50 Euros per night. However, I read the reviews of the hotel and most travellers seemed pleased. I booked the hotel via email inquiry directly to the hotel. They responded very quicky. Once we arrived in Venice,...

Our room was so small that we had to coordinate movements, but it had a similarly tiny balcony over a canal, which was fun. The front desk staff wasn't helpful (couldn't operate the Trenitalia website after offering to help reserve a train, gave inaccurate directions to the laundry). Internet access is expensive; they charge by the hour, and it only...

Great location!!! It is midway between the Rialto and St. Mark's. There are many good restaurants in the neighborhood and the staff is more than happy to make recommendations and help in any way they can.

I booked this hotel for a 3 night stay as part of a round-the-world tour so was obviously on a budget. I was worried slightly that by paying budget prices I'd get a bad deal. Not so! I booked a room with a view. I was worried that it would be a glimpse of the canal from a bathroom window...

Staying in San Marco

Neighbourhood Profile
San Marco
The most famous sestiere (district) in Venice has one of the world's most famous squares, St. Mark's (Piazza San Marco). Anchored on one end by the basilica, clustered around it are restaurants, museums, shops, orchestras playing in the square, pigeons, the grand pink Doge’s Palace (Palazzo Ducale), the soaring campanile bell tower, an astrological clock tower, plus gorgeous cafes and restaurants like Florian and Quadri. Piazza San Marco is beloved by Venetians themselves. They book a table anytime, which offers a buffer from the fray. This grand outdoor drawing room attracts Venetians for a stroll too, especially late in the afternoon when the hoards of daytrippers thin out. It's simply a grand place to meet.
