#12 of 25 hotels in Cortona
Once upon a time there was a very old mill...Today it is a charming Locanda with a special typical Tuscan Restaurant, completely renovated by Riccardo and Silvia Baracchi, owners too of “Relais & Châteaux Il Falconiere”. A heaven of tranquillity and elegance, in the middle of the Cortona countryside, a land famous for its culture, cuisine, and great wines.Locanda del Molino with its romantic rooms, is located in Montanare, on the upper Esse valley, and just few kilometres away from the Etruscan town of Cortona. The environment that surrounds Locanda del Molino is very interesting both for culture and for landscapes. There are eight guestrooms overlooking the creek, where every guest will experience the relax of sleeping while lulled by the sound of the waterfalls. Each room has been individually decorated and fully furnished by Silvia: it will feature either four poster beds or upholstered frames, antique or country style furniture, yet each room shows its authenticity of the almost lost flavours so characteristic of the Cortona countryside.“The style of cuisine that I would like to find in a restaurant like at locanda is for me simple and genuine, but never ordinary. Our Locanda offers mainly traditional Cortona’s cuisine and a shot from the past with almost forgotten dishes in the “Daily menu”. Guests can share with us the pleasure of rediscovering our local cuisine matched with great wines.” The Pizza Gourmet created with lots of passion and love, WOOD GRILLED over hard wood from our hills. Its truly a unique product, topped with unique beautiful ingredients making a pizza that will make you fall in love. The pizza you can enjoy at LOCANDA del MOLINO is made through slow rising and with the highest quality ingredients, typical of the Italian tradition.

Locanda del Molino is an inn that one could easily miss when driving past it. Although not eyecatching on the outside, inside, a world of traditional Italian hospitality unfolds. Stefano, the manager, went out of his way to accommodate our every request. There is a nice swimming pool to cool down on the hot summer days, with a free beach towel service. Our one year old loved the pool and its fountains. The pool is surrounded by a luscious garden with beach chairs, so you can swim, lie down and relax before or after visiting Tuscany’s breathtaking old hilltop towns. The hotel is old but well kept, it has a nice old fashioned country charm with furniture from Italian nonnas (grandmothers). Our room was nice and romantic, the bathroom spacious and we just loved the complementary soaps, lotions, hair products and shower gels, based on Tuscan olive oil and herbs. The road that runs by the inn is a bit noisy, but as city dwellers, we were used to this so did not found it a problem and traffic is only occasional. The restaurant below the rooms is just sensational. Part of the Baracchi Group, this restaurant is the most traditional of the three. The other two restaurants are located in the area and can of course also be visited. We have not visited the gourmet restaurant so can not say anything about that, but did drop by the Botega Baracchi in Cortona. This was a rather disappointing experience, I would not recommend them. The restaurant at Locanda del Molino, however, is a very pleasant experience. Nice Italian country dishes, of high quality, prepared with love. The appetizer are outstanding and the pizzas are very special. Next to a menu of traditional pizzas, pizzaiolo Leonardo serves some of the most creative pizzas bianches I have ever enountered. Using local ingredients of awesome quality, I was positively surprised. Being an experienced pizzachef myself, I am highly critical of the products most pizzerias serve. Leonardo, however, makes slow rising pizza dough with extra ingredients like spelt and wheat germs. This results in a pizza crust that blows your mind. We ate all the crusts, every time! I was allowed in the kitchen to inspect the pizza oven and pizza making process and am impressed. The staff in the restaurant and hotel, especially Bianca, Amr and the aforementioned Stefano were extremely friendly and saved us the best seats on their terrace for breakfast and dinner. The wines are excellent, all from the high quality Baracchi winery and if we wanted, the saved our bottle for the next day if we did not finish it. Breakfast was traditional Italian with good coffee, espresso and cappuccino. Dinner was first class, we noticed a lot of locals frequenting the place, which is always a good sign as well as tourist who stayed in the area driving all the way to come dine here. Bianca knows a lot about wines and both she and Amr were very sweet to our one year old. We felt very much at home and were treated with all one could wish for when traveling. The hotel only has 8 rooms, which makes for a very personal experience. Our room was clean and cleaned every day and we had a free parking space right at the inn. All in all, Locanda del Molino is great value for money, both hotel and restaurant and located centrally in an area where we got to visit a different town every day. Highly recommended!

Sat outside above trickling stream. Very friendly staff who were only too pleased to help and delight. Part of a group of 2 restaurants and a hotel. Nicely appointed historic building. Great food, best steak I had in ages. Thick cut tall fillet very well cooked. Yummy. Great local wine and scrumptious desert. A very nice meal that made my day perfect. Definitely on our top 5 local restaurant list. Will return

My wife, daughter and I ate dinner at Locanda del Molino last night. The restaurant is very attractive and although it looks small from the outside it is very spacious once you were on the inside. Although the garden view tables were already reserved, we had no problem getting a table in the dining room. The wait staff was very attentive, at least until the end of dinner when it took a while to get the check. At that time several tables were being served their dinner and the wait staff was in full swing delivering them their food. Our dinner was very good. The was very good. I recommend the restaurant to anyone. However, be aware that the current weather (June) is very hot and the dining room is not air conditioned. I imagine that with cooler weather our dining experience would have been even better. The restaurant is fairly remote and parking is limited so you will need to park alongside the road. All in all our experience was very good.

in a small neighborhood down the hill from the center city of Cortona, this Baracchi owned casual restaurant and pizzeria provides very good food at reasonable prices. On a recent visit I felt like I was at family gathering rather than a world away from home. The variety of offerings speak to a more sophisticated establishment and the careful preparation, presentation and service are worthy of same. There are literally dozens of choices to eat in Cortona. Don't miss this one.

Having holidayed and now living locally to this restaurant this is first time I have visited this restaurant and I have to say I was bowled over. As you pull up the building looks deceptively small but walk into the garden entrance and the venue just opens up. As the name suggests this is an old water mill and it was so pretty. We were given a table on the terrace which overlooked a stream and while dining you could hear the water tinkling along the stream, and between courses, watch the dragonflies. The food was amazing and pleasantly accompanied by a bottle of their own Barrachi wine which was very drinkable. I rarely eat desserts but I did order the strawberry tiramisu and all I can say is “wow!!” Service was good but certainly not rushed so, as it was a Sunday lunch, we took our time. I definitely will visit again and it’s so local!
