Travellers' Choice
Midway through the ancient road that links Gubbio to Perugia, stands on the horizon the severe and majestic Petroia Castle. A path through woods and meadows leads to a huge gate, beyond which Petroia opens in all its beauty. The origins of the Castle of Petroia are to be found between the IX and X century, on the 7th June 1422 was born in Petroia Federico da Montefeltro, the most famous Duke of Urbino. The Castle of Petroia is composed of medieval buildings enclosed within the Castle's walls. The three buildings that make up the Castle welcome guests in spacious rooms: The ancient and authentic rooms are carefully furnished to create an elegant setting and a welcoming atmosphere.

Staying in this hotel it is a unique experience which I recommend. History is everywhere, the building, forniture, frames, objects. We spent three nights in summer and we could appreciate dining in the courtyard. the pricing is reasonable, staff is very friendly and efficient, food was fine as well. Our suite ducale Elisabetta Gonzaga was nice but I strongly recommend not to choose this room in summer. It is right above the kitchen and the floor gets warm, it faces the courtyard and it is noisy till late and on top of this it has a window right on the stair to breakfast, making it noisy also in the morning. It really should cost less rather than more .....

I met my daughter's family (2 adults and 2 teen girls) at the Castello di Petroia while they were taking a longer trip in Europe. My suite was the Imperiale delle Trasparenze, which consisted of a large sitting room, king size bedroom, and a glass walled bath area with shower, the usual facilities and a Jacuzzi. There was also a private terrace off the bedroom. The view across the hills was spectacular! The outdoor restaurant was so good that we ate there all seven nights. The server, Paolo, anticipated our every desire. The location is central to Gubbio, Assisi and Perugia. We went truffle hunting with a guide and his trained dog, and came bak to the hotel with a sizable number of truffles, which were served to us at a special dinner that evening. I could go on, but let's leave some of the other features for you to discover.

My husband and two children (10 and 13) went on a wonderful Truffle hunt at the Castello last week. Stella the truffle hound was gorgeous and it was fascinating to watch her in partnership with her very nice handler. They managed to find a mountain of truffles and took us on a beautiful walk of the woods and spectacular countryside surrounding the castello. A great experience. Though we didn't actually stay at the castle, we were shown around it by the delightful Lucia who was charming and hospitable. Would love to return one day!

My wife and I spent three nights at the castle. Our accommodations were wonderful. The views are awesome. The food was excellent. The owner and his staff cannot do enough for you! They arranged for us to do a cooking class, a personalized guided tour of Assisi with wine tasting, horseback riding, truffle hunting and best of all - a day at the pool with a catered picnic lunch of delicious local wine, home-made cheese and pasta salad and baked bread. It was the most relaxing and quiet time of our entire two week trip to Italy. The staff specializes in hospitality and kindness and sensitivity to your needs. The ride to the castle was a bit daunting due to the roads but really very easy once you got the hang of it. This is a first class experience and we highly recommend it!

Your first impression as you arrive is what you got yourself into. Between no map giving proper directions (get close and look for the sign) and a steep, pitted gravel road leading you down and then up a hill, you question the wisdom of staying there. Plus, it is just a big place with not a lot of rooms, not really a castle in the true sense of the word. After a short while, your perspective changes. The place is serene, in the middle of a large farm, and the staff, including the owner and his daughter, are wonderful. The room was big, spotless and very dark and quiet, which is all you can hope for in a hotel. Because it is a way into town, one night we had dinner at the hotel, and it was one of the best we have ever had. Everything was very fresh, well presented and delicious. We usually try to not eat at hotels, but this exception was well worth it. Couple this great experience with a very reasonable rate and it is a rare 5-star experience.
