Disclaimer : I have voted Average since the next scale is "Very Good". This hotel is in between. I would call it "Good". The hotel is very close to the train station (10 minutes walking distance). It seems like they converted an old house/villa into a hotel. It has an O-L-D elevator (that works!) but cannot accommodate more than 2... More

I recently stayed at the National for a week on business, and fell fairly head over heels for it, mostly because of the charming atmosphere. The antique lift, the old Victorian typewriter on the stairs, the carpets, the lovely mural on the wall of my room, the courtyard my room backed on to, the restaurant, the bar, the incredibly friendly... We decided to stay in Bern on a recent trip, started walking from the train station and found this hotel. They had a room available and at 10 am let us check in. Large room, very clean. Beautiful 100 year old elevator that was available. Breakfast was included and was very nice as well.

We stayed here in October 2012. The hotel was located very close to the train station, which was really convenient. The location was great, right in the middle of the action. The room was simple, but had a nice large bathroom. Looked at some of the other reviews, saw some complaints about the room. When we travel, we would rather... More

We travelled to Berne as a group of four friends and can only recommend choosing a four-bed room at the National. For 200CHF that is 50CHF per person including a breakfast, which usually buys you a dorm bed or so. Location is also good, just a few steps from the train station and tram stop just in front of the... More

When we arrived the woman at the reception desk was unfriendly, then gave us a smaller room (with a reduction) without asking us whether we wanted a smaller room (one doesn't go to Bern if one want to save money), and then didn't give us reduction for paying in cash, which is mentioned I believe on their web site. When... More

The hotel is located in a classic old Bernois building and may once have been a luxury option. No more. Walk into the building and discover that it is now just another of the countless Swiss hotels that threw up partition walls everywhere to create a maze of miniscule rooms and a decor reminiscent of a 1980s student hostel. But... More

Looking at the hotel prices in Bern, the National seems not cheap but more reasonable: 110 Euro per night single room. You get very basic facilities for this price. For a short visit and being out all the day, at least you can profit to be close to the railways station. Be aware that you have to climb the stairs... More

If you like time travel and retro feeling you will love this hotel. The elevator is a real museum piece and lovingly cared for by the owners. Just to see and drive this vintage vehicle is worth a visit. The rooms are plain, very clean but definitely not new. I couldn't care less. The bed is perfect and it is... More

We had asked for a back quiet room due to other comments on Trip Advisor, but were given a corner room at the front. However, there was very little noise from the street; a bit of a quiet rumble when trams went past, and some squeaking of the power lines, but that's all. However the curtains are thin, and there...
