We got upgraded to this hotel from their sister hotel, Alpina Luzern. The good thing is that this hotel is that it is right next to the train station, so accessibility to food and transport was too-notch. There is a Starbucks right at the hotel too, if the coffee there is your thing. Apart from all these, I have to give it 4 stars because even though the room is clean and spotless, it looked old and tired. Which is actually in my opinion a draw for people who like it. The wooden floor is creaky, but the bathroom is new and good. No shower curtain so if you want to take a shower, you will have to stand further inwards where the glass panel is. The room lacks the basic amenities of a modern hotel such as coffee/tea and kettle (not sure if you can request for it), but they provide a free bottle of water everyday. Will I stay here again? Well I don’t know cos I have not tried the other ones around the price range.

Very old hotel The shower wasn’t working At the breakfast the staff is so rude. The told us not to take much food because we waste it. And we just wanted to eat some extra croissant’s. And with a rude way they told us that we waste the food. The breakfast was so pure.

Response from Brigitte Heller, Geschäftsführer at Hotel Monopol Luzern
Responded 2 weeks ago
Dear Reader, Now we are telling you the truth about this bad review. Our Hotel Monopol is a palace hotel from 1899. It is constantly being renovated. On the breakfast buffet are 45 different cold and warm dishes and 25 cold and warm drinks. We checked the shower, the shower worked. But the worst thing is that these guests made food waste from the very worst, which is ethically and morally unacceptable. The 2 guests have taken from the breakfast buffet and left the following food not eaten on the table: 3 croissants, 1 bread roll, 1 plate of meat, 1 plate of cheese, 1 apples, 1 mandarine, 2 bowls of jam, 2 bowls of Nutella, 2 bowl of fresh fruits salad, 2 butters. FOOD WASTE ! This very terrible food waste by these guests hurts me and my service staff in the heart. I was nominated by the Swiss Awards for the honor “Swiss of the year” with my initiative "Against food waste". I was the first hotel manager in Switzerland who set up table plates in the breakfast buffet area, which says: Good morning dear guests, All resources in this world are worthy and valuable. Please don’t waste food and put on your plate only what you can eat. With your cooperation, we can fund a relief organization for starving children. Thank you for your understanding. The other hotel guests in the breakfast room were also appalled by this food waste! The service employee was very friendly and polite and only showed on the table plate. The guests didn't like this, they called my friendly employee “rude”. We are always friendly, polite and accommodating, as you can read from all other reviews. There are many people in the world who have nothing to eat and die. That is why we humans in the western world do not have the right to make such terrible food waste. I wish you, dear readers, all the best and very good health. Kind regards, Brigitte Heller, General Manager, 4-Star Hotel MONOPOL Lucerne and 3-Star Hotel ALPINA Lucerne

A great stay in this old lady of a hotel! She seems to have been around in grand times, but her age had caught up with her. The current owners, or recent owners had obviously taken the time to look at what was important to travellers and make a plan with what they had. Clearly, there's been a lot of investment in the bathrooms. Nothing like a large, clean and modern bathroom in a hotel room. The water pressure was great! The showers (yes, both) were great! There was more than enough counter space in the bathrooms for all you vanity goods and more! We were allocated two rooms. Each room was massive. What the hotel had done was to combine two rooms into one. So each room as two front doors, a main room and a second room. Each room as a desk and a separate table with chairs. And each room also has its own bathroom! Each desk also has its own tv on it! It was great! We loved the space. The corridors were of a time gone by, but in good nick with finishes that made for period nostalgia! There are two wings, each with their own lifts and wide open stair cases! For those of you who enjoy it, there is a Starbucks on the bottom floor in the foyer. It seems that over the years, various restaurants and other shops have opened up in the building. Unfortunately there was no Aircon in our rooms, but it seems that this is quite common in Switzerland because it is generally a cold country, although we were there in a heatwave! The large windows and fans did the trick! The best part was the service! Anything that we needed was done with a smile and grace! I forget the name of the guy that helped us with our massive bags, but he was outstanding during our entire stay! Location is unbelievable! 1 min walk from the train station and waterside!

Very friendly with excellent services. The reception and breakfast service team were very friendly and helpful. At the reception they explained all possible excursions in Lucerne, on the lake and in the mountains. The cold and warm breakfast was very rich and excellent. The new deluxe room with AC was nice. In the night we ordered a bottke of white wine, which was served immediately. The location of the hotel is very central. We would love to come back.
