I visited Hotel Butterfly between the 14th-21st of January 2023. It was my first time travelling alone so I was anxious about visiting zermatt alone.
From minute one from setting foot through the front door I felt welcomed by the staff. The staff were attentive, friendly. Knowledgable and most importantly warm. Anything I requested was provided immediately. I had great conversations with Ana in particular and the barmaid who I did not get their name.
In terms of the facilities. The room I was allocated was lovely, spacious with a nice view from the balcony. The beds were very comfy with some of the best pillows I’ve had in a hotel. The bathroom featured a shower with incredible water pressure. The room felt modern and catered for my needs, as for the other facilities. The hotel has a large ski storage room that guests can use.
Food: the food in the hotel was fantastic, I booked through a package deal on a half board basis and breakfasts were of a great standard. It was your standard European style continental breakfast but the quality was great. At dinner time I was provided with a set menu that included a buffet style starter or a various starter that changed each day. And then main dishes consisted of a choice of meats. I ate some of my best meals in recent memory during my stay, taste, presentation and portion sizes were all excellent.
Location: Hotel Butterfly is located roughly 2 minutes walk from Zermatt train station, The gornergrat station is across the road from the train station so similar walking time. Walking time to Sunnegga station was roughly 10 minutes. And the Ski bus location is next to the gornergrat station which takes you to the Matterhorn glacier paradise. I can’t fault the location. It made getting around zermatt very quick and effortless.
Overall I loved my stay in Hotel Butterfly and should I return to Zermatt in the future, Hotel Butterfly would be the first place I would look into staying

The hotel is literally less than a two-minute walk from the train station, even though we took their cab pickup service that they provide. The stafff is very accommodating and friendly. Breakfast is included in the room rate, which is an added bonus since there were many choices, as well as gluten-free items. They also have an afternoon tea time, which was a great mid-afternoon snack. Would defnitely stay here again.

We (my two adult daughters and I) recently had the pleasure of staying at the Best Western Butterfly Hotel in Zermatt.
The location is great. Right in the action of the village, but one street back from the main street. Close to walk to everything but you don’t get the noise from the main street. It is down the end of the village where the trains arrive. They offer a free transfer/luggage transport to and from the train – although it is a very short walk also.
We were lucky enough to stay in the one bedroom suite (Room 505). If you get the opportunity to book this room do so! It is well worth the money. To top it all off there was a very large balcony looking up toward the Matterhorn. All the hotel staff were very friendly and welcoming. While the hotel looks older it is well kept and provides all the facilities you need for a wonderful stay.
There is a complimentary buffet breakfast each morning. We really appreciated the free afternoon tea each day. They offered hot drinks and a few sweet treats – cake, donuts etc. There was biscotti, but nothing savoury as such on the days we were there. I thought it was a wonderful treat and used it as an opportunity to get to know the other guests staying at the hotel. The hotel also We work in the travel industry and we thoroughly recommend the Hotel Butterfly for any stay in Zermatt – year round! We were there at the end of summer and while it snowed on our last day there we are very jealous of everyone that is enjoying the winter ski season now! Try to stay in Room 505 if you can!

The Hotel Butterfly is just a few minutes’ walk from the railway station (turn right after the McDonalds, pass the Icebreaker and Bose stores and the hotel is in front of you). It is also ideally placed for the Gornergrat rack railway station which is opposite the mainline railway station and gives access to the Gornergrat and Riffelsee areas. The funicular to Sunnegga, with onward cable cars to Blauherd and Rothorn, is about a 10 minute walk while the cable cars to Furi, the Matterhorn Glacier Paradise and the summer ski area are at the other end of Zermatt and are approximately a 20 minute walk.
Our room at the Hotel Butterfly was quite spacious with a good sized balcony, plenty of storage, a good-sized safe, a kettle for making tea and coffee and a full length mirror. There was no fridge. The bathroom had a good shower and there was also a hairdryer and magnifying mirror. The room was cleaned on the days we requested although the balcony didn’t appear to get swept and there was some rubbish left on the balcony by a previous occupant of the room.
Breakfast was good with a range of breads, croissants, hams, cheeses and yoghurts together with hot foods such a scrambled eggs, beans and sausages and bacon on alternate days. Evening meals were varied with 4 courses; two starters, a choice of 3 mains and a dessert. The mains tended to consist of 2 meat dishes and a fish dish. The restaurant can accommodate personal preferences such as those with vegetarian diets. The food was to a good standard and, while the food combinations seemed a little strange at times, the combinations worked. Alcohol was reasonable for Switzerland, with a small glass of wine costing £5 – £6 and a large beer being £6. Soft drinks were about £4.
Staff were very friendly and efficient especially Ana, Raphael and Antonio in the restaurant and Yurena on Reception.
The one major negative was an encounter I had with a woman who identified herself as the Manager but who l later learned was the Manager’s wife, who objected quite rudely when I attempted to take a croissant to my wife who was in bed as she felt unwell. It later transpired that we both had Covid. The Manager’s wife did eventually help me to take some drinks and the croissant to the room and was personable enough on subsequent meetings with her but the experience did leave a bad impression and I thought her behaviour did let down the excellent work of the other staff at the hotel.
Aside from this negative, the Butterfly is a reasonably priced option in Zermatt.

This is our 4th visits to Zermatt and first time stay at Butterfly hotel due to many positive reviews here, but we were disappointed. Yes the hotel is located near the train station which most reviewed stated, however, there are many many other hotels in the same area so this is no special. We found the number of ladies at reception were very unfriendly, no help for arrange dinner or service getting to and from ski lift that most other Zermatt hotel included as standard guest service. They just told you to get a taxi while their 2 hotel shuttles waiting outside.
We also found the hotel dated and mistaken been classic chalet style. Most rooms are next to the stair or lift which noise throughout the night and morning.
It is cheap for a reason so for extra few hundred chf we would no doubt learn our lesson and stay elsewhere.

this is an amazing Hotel, not just been so close to the railway station for arrival and departure, but mostly been so close to the train to the mountains, this is a perfect location. the hotel is very clean with amazing friendly staff, very personalized service where everyone remembers your routine and likes from the first moment. you feel like home away from home. the included breakfast buffet is plentiful and even your choice of egg will be prepared to order, any other possible request will be taken care of if possible. the management is available any time to make your stay is most pleasant and will help with any needs to make your stay most memorable. Overall 5* for this Hotel, all you need for the best ski vacation in this price range. Excellent job Hotel Butterfly Team and Management.

The hotel is just few minutes walk from the train station without the bustling traffic from the main street. Typical chalet style room and breakfast selections for Swiss mountain towns hotels.
We arrived at the hotel around 2pm and our room was not ready at that moment. The first receptionist just said that we can put our luggages in the storage room and come back around 3pm. We went to Coop and came back to the hotel around 2:45pm. It was Krista this time that we talked to and she informed us that our room is still not ready yet. She called the housekeeping (I guess) then took us to the dinning room (which was closed at that time) and told us that we can help ourselves with coffee and tea while we were waiting for the room. Moments later she came back with our room key tag while we were still drinking our tea and espresso.
Obviously, there was a difference between Krista and the first receptionist in term of customer service!

We hope to be able to return to this three-star property masquerading as a four-star. As another reviewer noted, Ana in the dining room is the employee who must have years of hospitality experience, perhaps at a high level hotel. She was even cheerful and helpful in the morning, when the breakfast people were generally cranky and close to unpleasant. In spite of the glum moods in the morning, breakfast runs as expected, and they offer the typical variety of everything you might like to have in the morning. Just one thing to note: One guest was clearly a wee bit different, mentally, than the rest of the guests. He was no threat to anybody, but he did like to be greeted, and one of the servers was unable to treat him kindly.

We stayed in the hotel in the week commencing 11 March 2023 and it was most enjoyable. It was clean, comfortable and informal.
The food was exceptional every day and with good choice. Also we enjoyed the late afternoon tea and cakes.
We had a superior room which was spacious enough for us and with a reasonable size balcony with a good view. It was nicely furnished and the bathroom was of a generous size including powerful shower attachments and a spacious base.
All of the staff were friendly and attentive. Our regular waitress at Dinner was Anna Cristina and she was most helpful.
The location was ideal being very close to the village centre, both railway stations and a bus stop meaning easy access to the lift stations.
Thanks Rosalia.

It is a given that Zermatt has expensive hotels, but the Butterfly is a real find. It is less than a five-minute walk from the train station and the Gornergrat railway. There is a nearby Coop food store for inexpensive eats (we got half a good roast chicken and a fresh pasta salad with delicious tomatoes) and wine. The hotel has been nicely modernized. There are two USB ports on each side of the bed AND two more by the desk. The bathroom is ultramodern. We had small, but nice balcony with a mountain view. There is plenty of storage and two pillows each. Even the toilet paper is nice! We enjoyed a really good breakfast with homemade cake, good sausages, fluffy croissants, jams, meats, boiled eggs, scrambled eggs, and baked beans. Alas, there was no bacon. If in need, there is one washing machine and drier (for a price!) that require a little effort to use and appropriate timing if there are other potential users.

I’d have to say the rooms are typically European and on smaller side of size. I’d call hotel directly and see if they have adjoining rooms.
I am not sure but it is a 5-minute walk
No; smart casual is fine.
There's no train up - only the Klein Matterhorn cable car or go up to Schwarzee on the same cable car and walk below the Matterhorn. You can take the Gornergrat train up and see the mountain at a distance.I recommend Schwarzee as you have a panorama of mountains.
Easy walk along the Main Street to the station, very near main train station. Enjoy!
