Detailed Reviews
Location is very good, just across from the station. The room was clean with modern decor and (basic) furnishings. Nice to have a balcony. The staff are mostly friendly. The breakfast is pretty basic - cereals (no proper museli or granola), bread rolls, a few sliced cold meats, yogurt, and a bowl of fruit cocktail. You get what you pay for and the price per night is very good for Zermatt. I found the wifi fine in my room, but no signal in the breakfast area.
The not so good - no kettle in the room, which is first time I’ve ever stayed anywhere where that is the case. So don’t plan on coffee on the balcony. They will give you hot water if you have a flask. When they say check out at 11am they mean it. I got back to the hotel at 10:50am only to find my keycard had stopped working and the receptionist told me it’s because 11am is checkout time. I had to point out it wasn’t 11 yet, which for me finished the stay on a slightly sour note.

Went to the Gornergrat Dorf Bistro for something to eat for dinner and did not want to spend too much. Very friendly staff, and good food (think Rösti and other Walliser dishes). Excellent value for money and recommended if you want something simple for dinner. Did not visit the hotel.

We stayed at this hotel in December 2003. Location is right accross the street from the train station. Easy to walk, especially with luggage. Rooms are circa 1970's, but very clean and with comfortable beds and pillows. We had a wonderful view of the Matterhorn. Nothing beats lying in bed, watching the sun rise on the Matterhorn. We had access to the large balcony off the second floor.
Breakfast was good, consisting mostly of breads, cheeses and jam with coffee and juices. Staff was very friendly and helpful, all speaking English.
The Gornergrat train station was also right out the front door. A must for a perfect view of the Matterhorn up high.
Would highly recommend this hotel for price and value. Would stay there again.

We are a frequent traveller & loves to dine out. We ordered the Menu of the day & Spaghetti bolognese did not mind the price because the restaurant/hotel looks elegant thinking it will be perfect for the occassion. To my surprise the service was quick but as we eat the food it was not fresh (seemed ready made & reheated). Unfortunately, the food tasted really awful & we experienced stomach ache after. Such a waste of time and money. 😝👎👎👎

The Good - Location. Best location in Town !! 150 feet from the Train that goes up the mountain.... and it ends there. Wait.... Breakfast was very good every day. Staff very nice. However it is mostly family members running the hotel, cooking and cleaning rooms. Beds are very comfortable.
The Bad - the decor and repairs are badly needed. Water dripping in dining area, hardwood floors coming up do the the water dripping. Molding coming off. Small TV's in bedrooms.
The Ugly - first let me mention that my parents came from Germany so I am accustom to very good German food. I decided one night to have McDonald's (right across the street) instead of having another dinner at the Hotel G. The blue cabbage was the WORST in my life. The food was edible, that is it. Another night I went to the butcher shop up the street who and an outside grill and grab a delicious sausage there.
A Motel 6 in the USA would be an upgrade to this premiere property location. It is just a shame that this 6th generation hotel is failing sooo poorly. It is appropriately rated 102 out of 109 hotels in Zermatt.

Young receptionist very nice.
Although it says it is a non-smoking hotel, the room smells of smoke. Does it also have an ashtray!?
The lamp in the bathroom doesn't work. The bed wasn't fresh after I left (black hairs on the headboard and underside of the pillow!!)
The lamp was mended and the room was disinfected. And the bed was made up in front of me.

The owner with a beard is sitting at the bar day in day out drinking beer and is careless about the guest satisfaction. It is obviously an alcoholic, it doesn’t look good and he is rude.
The food quality is bad. I would not come back here again. The owner with the beard is making inappropriate comments to the guests, and is chatting with some alcoholic couple.

We didn't stay at this hotel, we had lunch at this hotel's restaurant on our tour to Zermatt. Excellent service, super friendly and well-humored attendant, good beer and delicious food highlight for the rosti with forest mushrooms. Good cost benefit.

Gornergrat Dorf Hotel- Much more lovely and charming than the photos we found online. I will post some of our own photos so you get a better idea about this little gem!
Just so you know ... I am very picky and I loved this hotel.. so away we go with my review...
I decided to make this my first review after getting home from our Christmas-New Year holiday in Switzerland and France because I think this hotel is a hidden gem. What I mean by that is that it is buried deep on the list on TripAdvisor, but this hotel has got so much going for it, it should be on the top of the list.
We booked this hotel while we were in Interlaken Switzerland, we had been checking availability in Zermatt for weeks prior to leaving and everything that was centrally located in Zermatt was all booked up for our dates. We wanted to be there for New Year’s Eve and for my husband and daughter’s birthdays on December 30th.
Finally by a stroke of luck, a room opened up here, and we called, not only did they have a room, but after explaining our whole family with 4 kids were traveling with us, they offered us a special “family room, in the penthouse” The room had 3 connecting bedrooms and 3 full bathrooms. It also had 2 decks with absolutely amazing view of The Matterhorn.
When we got off the train from Interlaken, we expected to walk a bit to our hotel, but it was just across the street and up about a half a block. The location was ideal, as the station is in town and we could walk to all the cute shops and great restaurants. Also the ski rental shop was just across the street a 15 meters from our hotel, and our hotel gave us a discount coupon for ski rentals.
The ski school for lessons as well as lift tickets was just a few blocks (100 meters) up the street.
Everything was super convenient. There is a free bus that will take you to the funicular. Because we had 4 kids with us we took a taxi to the Funicular and it was 20 Swiss Francs.( At the time Swiss Francs and US dollars were nearly equal) The taxis are all electric and have a spot for skis on the outside. Anyway you get the bus or taxi and in 5 minutes you are at the funicular and then you are at mountain. So easy! We would totally go again.
Also, the private ski lessons for our kids were about half the price of the lessons that we pay for in Lake Tahoe, near where we live. So actually this ski vacation cost us less than if we had skied in California. No joke!
Meals in Switzerland were pricey but we found lots of charming places to eat that were memorable. Although, I am done with fondue for at least another year. Oh my goodness.
Also of note, the breakfast was included in the price of our rooms and it was decent and I just considered it a bonus.
We also had a traditional Swiss Lunch at the cafe in the hotel and that was delicious!
The staff was very friendly and bent over backwards to accommodate us. They even rushed to get our laundry done with short notice when we told them we were checking out early and catching a train to Chamonix.
The staff spoke English very well, they were really helpful and kind. We loved this hotel and would highly recommend it. I honestly can’t believe it doesn’t rank much higher on TripAdvisor. I am very picky, and although this hotel was 3 star, it was a 5 point 3 star. Everything was spotless in the rooms, there was some minor deferred maintenance, for instance the deck had some rotten boards that made me nervous with little kids, and the interior door was peeling in one of the bathrooms, and it wasn’t luxurious, just comfortable. Still there were also new fixtures in some of the bathrooms. The towels and linens were all clean and comfortable. And the view was absolutely dreamy. You could even see the mountains from the skylights in the bathrooms.
It was one of my favorite hotels of our whole vacation, and looking back, I wish we had stayed in Zermatt longer, but I guess it was nice to see Chamonix too.
Also, of note, this hotel seemed to cater to families and it wasn’t full of young partiers like many of the other hotels nearby.
Lastly, because we were there for New Year’s Eve we had one of the most memorable displays of fireworks ever from our deck. The fireworks lasted for hours.
All in all, for the price this hotel was an amazing bargain and really should rank at the top of TripAdvisor, I hope my review helps to move it on the list. Also, I will do my best to post photos because I think the photos online don't look as charming as it is in reality.
Thank you to the adorable family that were running the hotel and the restaurants ~ it felt very authentic Swiss hospitality and very welcoming. We would love to book with you again some day.

Owners have no values. I can not believe that we were not allowed a refund when we cancelled a booking 3 months in advance as my mother was diagnosed with cancer. we paid a full week in advance and gave them medical records. no refund for whole week...how callous? they tried to explain that their policy did not cover this. even though it was xmas period and they were fully booked and could and probably did find other guests. do not stay here! do not support people with these values. Imagine if it were your mother...
