I had two separate stays here in one month. The first one was good, but the second was quite unpleasant. The first room on the upper floor was quite modern, and the staff who checked me in were professional. My second stay here, on a lower floor, was noticeably worse. The woman who checked me in was incompetent and, quite frankly, rude. She asked for my COVID pass, but did not scan the QR code. However, she was very rude when she asked for my ID to verify the name: I gave her a copy of my passport, and she said 'What is this? This is not legitimate, you know' - well, you have my passport in my backpack that I left with your coworker while I was waiting for check-in to be available. I told her I could give her the real document if she returned my backpack to me, and she made some passive-aggressive comment about the backpack being very heavy. Well, yes, that one bag contained all my things for 3 days, so why is this a surprise? Isn't your job to check guests in, not make snide comments about them? There was a problem with my booking (not sure if this is the hotel's fault, or Agoda's - my booking that had been advertised at 70CHF/night was automatically cancelled, and rates were much higher after this). So I had to make another booking on the spot; she asked me to hand her my credit card, but did not quote me on the price of my new stay, and didn't let me operate the card machine myself. So for all I knew, she could have charged me an exorbitant amount for the stay, or stolen my credit card number. For all her objection to me not presenting my official passport, she was amazingly incompetent at copying the information from it. She *repeatedly* entered my first & last names incorrectly, despite me having corrected her twice! She also messed up my DOB, and then stopped me as I was going to my room & made me wait around because she failed to copy the passport number. When I returned to the hotel at night, she stared at me without saying anything. Not a big deal, but in comparison to her colleagues who had previously been quick to greet, this made me feel like i was unwelcome. The second room was significantly worse than that on my first stay. It was much dirtier - the floor looked poorly mopped; there was a white hair on the bathroom counter; the shower tiles were chipped and had build-up; there was soap scum stuck to the soap tray; the shower curtain stank of mildew; the bathroom generally smelled like a public toilet that had been covered up with air freshener, The bed was very low on the floor, and the passage between the bathroom is narrow, so I stubbed my foot on the low bed platform several times in the night. The desk was also much smaller, and did not have easy access to power outlets (which is a problem if you need to work on a computer). Negatives that applied to both rooms: 1) WiFi is not that fast. I had problems a couple of times when I had to take video conferences for work. 2) No mini-fridge or microwave. Normally, this would not be a big deal, but Zurich is so expensive that this actually is quite a hindrance; eating or drinking out adds up quickly. I would have saved a lot of money if I'd been able to heat up something from the grocery store, or keep a salad or beer on hand - but that's not doable here. 3) Poor sound isolation. You can hear the people above you walking around, the room next door slamming cabinets, the phone ringing or people talking on the phone in the hallway. 4) Some of the things promised on their official site, like body lotion and check-in time (true check-in time is 15:00, not 14:00 as stated), are not accurate. While insignificant in the grand scheme of things, this shows a lack of attention to detail. 5) There's a lift, but for some reason, you have to take a small set of stairs to get to it - which nullifies potential accessibility. 6) Baggage storage is not very secure - bags are left in the open at the front desk; no dedicated storage room, and no tag or other proof of ownership needed. Switzerland is safe, so maybe this is not really an issue, but I did not like it. 7) Location is not so convenient. It's about a 20-minute walk away from the main train station, but uphill - which was an unpleasant walk with luggage. There is not a lot in the immediate vicinity; there's a university nearby, but it's very dead here during holidays & weekends. Perhaps this would be good if you're looking to stay in a quiet neighbourhood - but point #3 means that you will probably not be able to sleep well anyway, if you are at all sensitive to noise. I would have given this hotel a higher rating if I'd only done the first stay - and presumably the high ratings here are from those who stayed on an upper floor. However, I cannot recommend such an unreliable hotel at this price.

I originally come from Zurich and have for years stayed in the Plattenhof Hotel when I go home to see friends or attend an event. It is my absolute favourite hotel and I am always greeted like an old 'friend'. When I had a problem with the Covid certificate the manager could not have been more helpful: he spent hours on the phone to the relevant offices to sort it out. All staff, from breakfast service to reception to cleaners, are absolutely top.

Had an Amazing stay. The hotel itself is super cute and an amazing young and thriving area. The room was really comfortable, as was the bed. I’m definitely staying here the next time I come into work in Zürich, and would recommend anyone else stay here as well Really friendly staff. Great location.

We choose the location in order to be near the university hospital. The hotel is near the old city but walking there is steep downhill ( or uphill). It is very near the Kunsthalle. It is a lovely hotel with very friendly and help full staff., i.e. They helped very much with information about the Covid travel test and also enabled a generous late check-out (because of a late flight) We had some difficulty finding the entrance because it was not as prominent as on the picture. Arriving on a hot and humid day we felt the lack of airco. The location in a student quarter has its effect on the hotel . It is cozy and informal. Our room (premium double) had all the amenities one would wish for but no cupboards and the design of the bathroom makes it unsuitable for elderly people (nowhere to put soap etc., slippery and nowhere to hold ) cleaning could be improved The Italian restaurant is excellent and has lots of vegan and vegetarian choices and outstanding service by Michael and his staff . Parking is in a nearby parking garage for a reduced rate
