It's a pretty nice Hostel, they serve hot breakfast every morning (which is free), staff was super friendly, and the bedrooms have high ceilings but there were a couple things I didn't like: 1) The wifi is so slow. 2) The 16 person rooms are pretty cramped 3) Doors to individual rooms are not locked, the only thing that's locked...

Friendly and welcoming staff and comfortable, cozy rooms with individual lockers (bring your own lock, though). Clean bathrooms and breakfast is included with your reservation. A perfect location for exploring the city and getting around. There's a cat that lives there, so if you're allergic, be aware.

Didn't stay here, but ate in their restaurant. Not run on a commercial basis, so prices are very reasonable. Atmosphere is very pleasant and the staff run it as a Christian service for visitors to Amsterdam. Both this and its sister restaurant and hostel elswhwere in the city are highly recommended.

My friend and I stayed here for three nights while interrailing. As we booked late and at a weekend, there were only beds in a 16 bed girls dorm left. I was a bit anxious about such a big room but it was actually a lot of fun meeting people from Italy, China and France. Everyone had their own locker...

The place is welcoming and so the staff is. You can have breakfast, which may consists of muesli, milk and fruit, or opt for a "hot breakfast", which includes pancakes, French toasts, bread with cheese and ham (to name a few). The rooms are not that big, but if you plan to spend 3 or 4 days in Amsterdam, they...

I recently stayed here with 6 other friends and we were skeptics at first because we rarely stay in hostels but this was fantastic. The staff were so so friendly and helpful, the rooms were basic but clean and cleaned daily. It was cheap and cheerful definitely with brilliant extras such as free wifi, free use of luggage room and...

We were 3 women staying here. It was a 16 bed dorm. So yes, the hostel is a good option for budget travelers. Lovely area outside where you can enjoy a sumptuous breakfast. Staff were nice and helpful. The bathrooms were outside and a bit too small. But cant complain since it was a common facility. All in all a good...

Shelter City was a great surprise, very positive I think. In addition to the localization near everything that is important. I wanna thank specifically to Gerson, the man who saves my life in the last night because of "you know what, that's Amsterdam". All the staff were incredible, but with my reasons, I'll never forget Gerson and the Shelter City....

My friends and I enjoyed our time at Shelter City. The facilities are clean and well-kept, and the staff are enthusiastic and engaging. I particularly enjoyed the hot breakfast options and the inexpensive dinners available for purchase. My only recommendations are for the hostel to acquire new pillows and provide more outlets in the rooms for 16 guests. Otherwise, I'm...

I was afraid after reading some reviews about drugs, alcohol, etc. I am a conservative person yet, open mind to visit a city like Amsterdam. I Wanted to see the beauty of the canals, museums, train station without being offered any cake. It was Summer, sunny, warm day, so was nice to walk around the streets, see the bikes and...

Staying in Red Light District (De Wallen)

Neighbourhood Profile
Red Light District (De Wallen)
To visit Amsterdam and not explore De Wallen (the Dutch name for this area) or to go only to gawk at its saucier aspects would mean missing the opportunity to view some of the city’s most picturesque canals, historic landmarks, and impeccably presented examples of traditional local architecture – not to mention Amsterdam’s own Chinatown, Europe’s largest Buddhist temple and more local treasures. Sure, there are some less salubrious activities drawing the curious to this age-old part of time. Nevertheless, the Red Light District is still a very safe and incredibly fascinating area where at the turn of a corner you can be transported from the dingy glow of modern day neon red to a glorious 16th century Delft blue dreamscape.
