Not much to say. This is an outstanding palace in the historical Alfama neighborhood, very well preserved. It works as a guesthouse, but we went for Sunday brunch - VERY good and very LARGE! Also very well served by the diligent owner and staff. Recommended.

This is a very unusual small boutique hotel located in a mansion built in the 1900s on top of the medieval city fountain hence the name. It's not cheap but they will really treat you like a king. The few rooms are very large, tastefully furnished and decorated, and several halls even more so. The house even has a small...

All the charm of a small hotel with river views and all the personal service of the best 5 star hotels. We had a marvelous stay at this beautifully restored palace. The necessary modern amenities like superfast WiFi in the room are wrapped inside a gorgeous property. This is a stunning hotel. The staff are all magnificent, smart and extraordinarily...

We stayed in the Lola room for 4 nights. It was like having our own little pied-à-terre in the alfama district. We were welcomed by Maria as if it was her own home and shown around this beautiful hotel that used to be a residence. The public rooms are beautiful with a library, terrace, tea room, breakfast room. Only 6...

WOW. What a place! It is very hard to review this place, because it does not fit any standard category. It is a small palace, a hundred year old gem, absolutely brilliant. They have only 6 rooms. Don't expect a standard hotel. Nothing is standard here. Everything is special. Location is good. 10 minutes walk to the Praca do Comercio....

A luxurious hotel in a fabled area of Lisbon surrounded by fado clubs and a real reminder of the past glory of Lisbon. Breakfast is a real feast and the staff are very friendly. Well worth the price. I would definitely revisit

It's been a month since we've been back and I still can't stop raving about Palacete Chafariz D'El Rei. The hotel was absolutely gorgeous! The service was flawless. I can't get over how sweet the staff is. I fell in love with the place right when I stepped through the doors. Breakfast the next morning made me feel like royalty!...

Beyond the exquisite interiors of the individually furnished rooms, beyond the delicious breakfasts available at any hour you choose to rise, beyond having some of Lisbon's most historic sites on your doorstep, what makes a stay here simply the best is the utter delightfulness of each and every of the staff. I was welcomed as family two years on from...

Staying in Castelo, Alfama & Mouraria

Neighbourhood Profile
Castelo, Alfama & Mouraria
Explore narrow streets and alleyways, small cafes and, of course, the internationally acclaimed Fado music. The earth-shattering Great Earthquake of 1755 destroyed most of the city but the contiguous neighborhoods of Mouraria, Castelo and Alfama remained standing to this day. These neighborhoods represent Lisbon at its historical best. The cool breeze of the Tagus river will take you up the hills to the sound of Fado, where you'll discover the best "tascas," eat delicious fresh fish and drink great wines. Discover hidden viewpoints and ancient traces of other civilizational ruins in the heart of the Portuguese capital. These are centuries-old neighborhoods that will welcome you to the very best of old Lisbon culture.
