The shared living spaces were nice, and our room was comfortable, but the room was nothing special or romantic about it. It was very plain, and not as nice as the pictures led me to expect. The location is neat, but it can be difficult to get to the hotel, as many taxis refuse to drive up in the castle...

Dear Guest, Thank you for staying with us and for your feedback. We are disappointed to read that your expectations were not fully met. Our rooms are all individually decorated with custom-made furniture. There are variations in furniture, layout, patterns, colors among the rooms but all of them were specially decorated with the medieval atmosphere in mind. The Solar Do...

We have just stayed here for 3 nights. We wished it had been longer. This was not our first visit to Lisbon but our first to this hotel, and it will be our choice when we return. All the people who looked after us made us feel so welcome. Our room overlooked the courtyard with a small balcony, it had...

Stopped off in Lisbon for a brief visit at the start of our holiday. Solar was an oasis of calm nestled in the walls of the Castelo at end of narrow winding cobbled streets. Excellent staff and service with nothing to much trouble. Restaurants nearby for meals in the evening and centre of Lisbon pleasant walk or bus ride down....

Our first day in Portugal we were welcomed at this beautiful hotel high above the city by friendly staff and told there is free tea and coffee and a pastry available at any time. This was the only hotel that offered this, also bathrobe and slippers provided without asking. Visit to the castle next door made ideal half day before...

Castelo do Solar is built in the same building as what was previously the Castle San Jorge' royal kitchens, but the building has been restored well. You will get what you pay for in this hotel, in a good way. Being one of the more expensive hotels in the Lisbon area, Solar do Castelo offers a premium breakfast, clean and...

Just returned from twelve enjoyable nights here. The hotel is ideally situated right next to the castle in the middle of narrow streets. The building is an interesting mix of old and new, tastefully decorated and with well equipped rooms. Although it doesn't have a restaurant, there are lots of excellent places to eat within walking distance. After a busy...

We have had a lovely stay here. Great location up on the hill by the castle with a courtyard garden and beautifully appointed rooms. Plenty of attention to detail and very helpful and friendly staff. Good WiFi and excellent breakfast. The air conditioning in our room was very quiet, and the location, away from the main streets was also generally...

Friendly welcome from reception and all staff. Excellent breakfast and tea/coffee/water available at all times. Lovely courtyard to sit in. Relaxing atmosphere away from the busy Lisbon streets. Good room with nice toiletries. Plain exterior to hotel but lovely inside. Need sensible shoes for all the cobbled streets outside where not every taxi will venture!

This hotel is located in the heart of Alfama. The common areas, courtyard and living room are luxurious, but at the same time homey. An amazing breakfast buffet. The staff was friendly and helpful. The only reason, I am not giving it a 5 star review was our room. It was decently sized for Europe, but it was located on...

Staying in Castelo, Alfama & Mouraria

Neighbourhood Profile
Castelo, Alfama & Mouraria
Explore narrow streets and alleyways, small cafes and, of course, the internationally acclaimed Fado music. The earth-shattering Great Earthquake of 1755 destroyed most of the city but the contiguous neighborhoods of Mouraria, Castelo and Alfama remained standing to this day. These neighborhoods represent Lisbon at its historical best. The cool breeze of the Tagus river will take you up the hills to the sound of Fado, where you'll discover the best "tascas," eat delicious fresh fish and drink great wines. Discover hidden viewpoints and ancient traces of other civilizational ruins in the heart of the Portuguese capital. These are centuries-old neighborhoods that will welcome you to the very best of old Lisbon culture.
