Detailed Reviews
The property has various bedroom suites. We stayed in two during our extended stay. The accommodation has an aged chic. Its has a subtle style with art, decorations, the best bed linen and bedding and a feel that only someone of exquisite taste could create. Stylish but not flashy. Slightly aged, perhaps shabby chic. We loved it!
Stunning views to sea, sunrise across the ocean, fresh air, national park surrounds.
Added to that, lovely staff on site always willing to help and assist. We love this place and will be back and back again.

We stayed at Ha Mar ao Luar in mid october, after carefully checking out what the weather might be like at this time. Much to our surprise (and luck some might say) We had FANTASTIC weather!
Some people have said that a car is a must to go here, but we decided we would try it without one. After seeing how the portugese drive I have to say that it wouldn't be my choice to drive here!
Anyway, as one reviewer said, as long as you don't mind walking, it is fine. The walk (down a fairly steep hill) into Setubal itself from the hotel takes about 20 minutes. We did walk back up a couple of times (when we cooked dinner on the 2 ring stove), but this was whilst still light. The road is unlit for some parts so not recommended to do that at night.
The downside of not hiring a car was that it was a little difficult actually getting to the hotel from Lisbon airport. We ended up getting a taxi to the bus station (Oriente) and then a fast bus (the 562 from stop 21 I believe!) from there to Setubal (which takes the very cool Vasco de Gama bridge), where we then got another taxi to the hotel. This probably cost us about 30 euros as opposed to the 70 euros we were quoted to take us straight from the airport to the hotel.
The bus timetables for the 562 can be found here;
http://www.tsuldotejo.pt/ver_horario.php?fx=562_Ida_20100913_20110630_lineScheds.svg.png
With the bus, as our Portuguese wasn't great it took us a while to find the right bus stop at Oriente, but we managed to understand that you buy the tickets from the bus driver on the actual bus – there is no ticket booth.
As the journey there was a little bit of a stress, we got a taxi on the way back which cost 60 euros, but on balance everything is such good value in Setubal that its worth the stress saving of trying to get taxis and buses back to the airport.
The hotel itself is in a really amazing location, as long as you're after a bit of relaxation – in the Arrabida hills which is a designated National Park. We had booked the Cabana (a large wooden house in the middle of the grounds), as it said on the website that it was very private, had a 'full kitchen' and was larger. When we arrived, two of the ground staff showed us to the Cabana, which looked lovely, but they also very kindly asked us if we would like to see 'The Casinha'. This is nearby but slightly higher up the hill and closer to the main houses' terrace. They said that we could choose which one we would prefer – and I have to say, the Casinha was much more cosy for two people.
If you have a family then the Cabana is great, but we thought the Casinha had two things going for it over the Cabana; a small decked terrace with sun loungers and a table, and a better (amazing) view out over the sea, the Sado estuary and Troia Beach. The bedroom is nice and cosy, and there is a sofa, TV and CD player/radio in the lounge. There is also a small 2 ring cooker, so a couple of nights we bought food from the town (there is a supermarket called Pingo Doce on the right hand side of Avenue Luisa Todi) and cooked in the Casinha.
Breakfast is served by way of stocking up your small fridge each morning with cheese, ham, butter, jam, milk and fruit juice, and then warm fresh bread rolls are hung outside your door at around 9am.
The town of Setubal is (in our opinion) a little run down, but perhaps 'out of season' has less people and sights to cover up the many empty houses and graffiti that seems to adorn every bare surface apart from churches. However, the old town is nice, and the main square has a few cafes/bars where we had a few cocktails!
The real highlight of Setubal is it's food/restaurants. Quite simply you can eat really well for very little. Being a dock, there is an abundance of fresh fish, which you can get grilled on the outdoor charcoal barbecues at various places. We had some recommendations (which I must thank Annie from TripAdvisor for!) for restaurants and they were all extremely good;
Novo 10: This is apparently 'The Special One' Jose Mourinhos restaurant of choice when he is back in his hometown, and it is very good. Simple, rustic Portuguese cooking but the swordfish I had was fantastic.
Frango de Guia: Very good charcoal grilled chicken restaurant (if you get sick of fish, which is unlikely!), big portions and very, very reasonably priced.
O Miguel: This is next door to Frango de Guia, and is another 'Marisqueria' (Fish grill). Seemed a little more pricey than Novo 10, but again was very good. I had 2 red mullets with nice fresh side salad and boiled potatoes.
A few bits of advice which were passed on to me regarding restaurants are worth noting. When you sit down, the waiters will bring up a myriad of appetisers; bread, butter, octopus salad, olives. Whatever you keep, you will be charged for, so its best just to either say 'no thank you', or tell them which bits you'd like to keep on the table.
Secondly (and we only experienced this at Novo 10), it seems to be more traditional to serve 'Chips' with any non-fish dish. At Novo 10, this meant essentially hand made crisps! However, at Frango de Guia it was actually french fries. This is a minor point though when the food is so good and fresh.
We would walk down to the restaurants, and then get a taxi back up the hill, as we wouldn't recommend walking up the hill at night, although during the day its ok if you like a nice workout!
Lastly, our highlight of the trip was the beach at Troia. As we had such good weather we made extensive use of this. It is reached really easily via a passenger ferry on the dockside, to the left as you face the river/sea, probably 30 mins in total from the hotel. They depart roughly every 30 minutes, and cost €2 each way, and takes about 15 minutes to cross over to the Troia resort. One day we even saw a dolphin on the trip over! The beach at Troia is absolutely lovely. As we went out of season, we pretty much had the beach to ourselves! Even on the saturday and sunday there were probably no more than 20 people on the beach, and it is quite a large beach. I imagine in high season it probably gets really packed, but its almost worth going in mid/low season just for the peace and tranquility.
So to sum up, if you're after peace, walking, a bit of adventure and some stunning coastlines, then this is the place for you.

Well where do I start, I was nervous at first booking this windmill for a week but from the second we arrived the welcome was outstanding from Maria and the family. Showed us to our rooms, told us everything about the area and surroundings with any questions asked were answered with excitement and knowledge. Girlfriend ( now engaged) was blown away with the welcome, the windmill and the view.
Lovely 10 minute stroll down the hill to heaps do fresh fish restaurants and bars.
You could walk up the hill on way back but it's only €5 to get back to hotel.
Best beaches I have been to for ages which is a short ferry ride (€2 15 mins). White sands with clear blue sea.
Every where friendly, clean and helpful.
Oh check out Sado cruises as we hired a yacht for a day where the friendly funny captain cooked for us and of course some wine involved was great.
Can't fault this place at all apart from our break was to short.
Will return for sure. Well done Ha Mar ao Luar and team

Quiet place, up in the Hill, with a stunning view. We stayed in the windmill and were delighted: fireplace, nice living room, wonderful bedroom upstairs and we woke up with the sunlight, overlooking the ocean and fresh bread at the door. You need to self-cater and bathroom could be bigger, but then you can sit outside and have breakfast in the sun, with a great view to Troia, the water and the hills. There is also a swimming pool but we preferred going to the lovely beaches, which are just a 10/15 minutes drive.

We stayed there 1 night, whilst it was a bit complicated to find the room was very nice and the complete team were very accomodating.
I personally would rather consider the ha mar ao luar more of a b&b than a hotel.
Cannot fault it though.

If you enjoy cozy places to stay with an amazing view, you will loved it! And the view is breathtaking! There are very few houses, so expect a service of a small business, personal and effective. Unless you really like walking like some reviews described, you should have a car, because you are staying in the top of an hill (If an natural park- Arrábida),therefore a trip to the beach, or to the town means 5/10 m in a car or taxi, and more than 20 by foot.
I didn´t give 5 starts because there are some minor problems in the room i stayed, like some tiles broken
This is my home town, so if you need some advice about restaurants, activities or something else, contact me.

We stayed in the Cabana for a week. It was rustic, but charming and very peaceful. It is also very private. We enjoyed the beaches at Arrabida, especially, Galapos, and Costa Caparica. It is possible to walk into town in about 10-15 mins down the hill. It is very steep to walk back up, but very easy to find a taxi in town and cheap to come back up. There are some nice restaurants selling BBQed fish and meat. The Pousada is nearer and has a lovely location, but the restaurant is rather expensive for what it is. We enjoyed our stay very much and would go back again.

Great stay, 3 min drive down to the town - brilliant restaurants, the ones facing the port are the best, much cheaper than in town the highly recommended by guides books near the ferry (good but much more expensive). Amazing coastal road drive to nearby Sessimbra is well worth while as is a trip to the peninsula - but don't take the car, just get the foot passenger ferry (car ferry is expensive and longer and you have to pay / find parking).

So we arrived at the resort based on several good reviews and the fact the hotel is on i-escape.
What was good
- Secluded
- The blue room apartment was spacious and clean but basic. It would be hard to self cater using the kitchenette but it was sufficient for breakfast (tea, toast etc) and a sandwich or salad lunch
- Nice pool area
- generous breakfast - rolls, jam, cheese, ham, juice tea and coffee.
Cons
- no staff around so hard to find them to ask anything
- not luxury - our shower fitting was broken and the tiles were chipped
Overall - a good base if you plan not to stay in the hotel much. There were several of the owners family around which meant a lot of kids by the pool but as the beaches were amazing we spent most of our time on the beach.
You will need a car - it takes about 20 mins to walk down to town but about 5 euros back in a cab and you would not want to walk back in the dark! there are several dogs that will bark and chase you if you do walk down so you have been warned! The great beaches etc are also within a short drive.
Setubal is not v exciting as a town but there are a number of good restaurants, Avoid posada sao philipe - ok for a drink on the terrace but v overpriced for dinner ( 100 euros plus for 2 of us) . Setubal town has a range from small eateries ( where 2 of us ate and had a couple of glasses of wine and beer for 20 euros) to some smarter places. Champerania was very nice, with a good tasting menu for 2 people for 30 euros. Novo 1o was popular but our favourite was Xica Bia where we had some delicious and local cuisine.
They all serve you starters at the beginning but you get charged for these so watch what you eat. They do not charge you for what you do not touch. Most places its pretty standard - bread, olives, cheese but Xica Bia had yummy rabbit, veg and seafood. They also had the best wine selection we found.
All in all a nice area, but don't expect too much from the hotel

Well Hello there!
We stayed at Quinta Ha Mar AO Luar during our months stay in Portugal towards the end of our trip...... We enjoyed our stay there and they delivered a light breakfast each morning which was nice. We also had a kitchenette and we even cooked in one night. It is not easily accessable from Lisbon and this Quinta is very small and I would doubt they have any kind of pick-ups for transport..... but saying that you should probably ask them. We were driving around Portugal so it wasn't an issue for us. 2ndly it's a the top of a very narrow road up a .... mountain so walking is out of the question at least at night. We did have 2 dinners in town at the bottom of the mountain and they were very nice and you do have access to quite a few places but the Quinta can recommend as well..... I hope this helps you in your decison making....... It was very quiet there and I think you will enjoy it...... it's not a luxury place by any means but comfortable. They do have internet but the owner had to give us a little plug in enhancer that worked out very well....... so again ENJOY Portugal!
"Must stay in the windmill as it was super romantic, cosy with great views. Breakfast with fresh bread delivered every morning was amazing sitting out in the sun with private views. They even supply a BBQ if you fancy a night off from the great restaurants. The Pool, (a short 1 minute stroll past lemon trees ) from the windmill is also a delight as it's almost your own, very peaceful with also amazing views."Read full review
