What a fantastic experience we had at Vidamar Resort Madeira. From the moment we arrived, check in felt like we were being welcomed home. Marissa at the check-in desk set a high standard to the hospitality of this hotel. Susy (one of the chefs in the Oceans restaurant) had such a positivity about her that made you feel the food was served true joy. The hotel was very clean, tastefully decorated and full of activities the whole family can enjoy. Everyone who works there were pleasant and eager to assist. I had to work whilst there and I was given access to the business centre to hold my online meetings at an agreed time. This was very handy and showed the flexibility and service oriented hospitality this hotel has. The dining experience was great, los of variety. I would highly recommend this hotel. This is going to be where we stay whenever we visit Madeira. This was a very good find! Can't wait to return.

We've stayed in Funchal several times over the years, as we love doing levada walks, but this was the 1st time at the Vidamar. The location, close to the Lido was convenient, staff were friendly & helpful & the buffet food was very good. A very nice touch was the bottle of fizz & a cake for my husband's birthday. During Covid times, facemasks were compulsory whilst walking round the hotel , this was understandable & good. Although plastic gloves were available for use at the buffet, we weren't encouraged to wear them & few people did. We were surprised that we were not asked for our room number when entering the dining room only when we ordered a drink then we wrote the room number & name on the chitty. When we checked out, there were items on our bill that we'd not had!! They were removed when the chitties were checked - they had our room number but a different name!! It seems that almost anyone could enter the hotel, go to the buffet, order drinks with a room number, write any name & leave!! This is embarrassing for the reception staff who have to check through all the chitties & remove the ones that don't belong. The other disappointment was the limited entertainment in the evening - just one small bar with a group sometimes playing. The hotel was very clean, plain white walls with little decoration until a lovely Christmas tree was brought in.

Honestly first impressions were okay, the hotel was minimalistic and looked okay. Rooms were basic (dated old wooden furniture, a tv that looks over a decade out of date and furnishings that didn’t match) but did the job (not even close to 5*). We decided to have lunch at the place looking over the pools and ocean- one word to describe this- awful. It was overpriced and honestly just bland. Please don’t bother with it, the local cafes and restaurants serve beautiful food for so much cheaper including cocktails and wine. When getting into bed on the first night I was horrified to discover plastic covers on beds, I was honestly in total shock this is what I would expect in a hospital not a supposed 5* hotel room. I’m well travelled and have been fortunate enough to stay in many lovely hotels and resorts and never once have I encountered a plastic sheet on the bed (never experienced this in any hotel before or even a hostel for that matter). We removed it from both beds before going to sleep on the first night and thankfully housekeeping got the message from the pile of two plastic sheets on the chair in our room and did not put them back on. Not only is it tacky and avaricious because the hotel are desperate to save money but in a warm/muggy country it’s not practical and is going to cause excessive sweating in the night. The scam for water was an ongoing joke throughout the holiday and honestly left a sour taste in our mouths. The hotel categorically won’t allow you to have tap water at dinner however this isn’t due to the safety of tap water in Madeira. We made a point of asking the staff and reps at the Savoy Palace up the road and even they say the tap water is safe to drink (they laughed at the fact vidamar force you to pay for water) . If the tap water was not safe to drink why do you not make customers aware of this from the moment they check in (it’s not in the welcome book)? And if it’s not safe to drink why are you not providing water in the room free of charge (other than the bottle you get on arrival). Again, I’ve never stayed in a 5* hotel in a country where the tap water isn’t safe to drink and they have not provided bottled water free of charge (half board or not). Bottled water is also provided free of charge at breakfast along with juices and tea and coffee. So one of two things need to be admitted by the hotel for the whole situation to make sense 1. You admit tap water is not safe to drink in Madeira but don’t tell your clients this or provide an alternative throughout their stay included in the cost so are risking their safety or 2. You are trying to scam (and yes it’s a scam because you denied us tap water when we specifically asked for it!) people out of even more money for overpriced bottled water. We were fed up with the scam so we brung in our own water to dinner from the room provided by the hotel (the glass bottle provided when you first check in so not an outside water as it does state in bold in the welcome book no outside food or drink is allowed- again seems very controlling and money grabbing) and after 2 nights of doing that the hostess (noted it was a different hostess to the previous 2 nights so it seems they have different rules…) suddenly decides it’s not allowed- shows how much of a scam the water is and you are acquisitive which is not very classy for a 5* hotel. All the staff were then rude to us all night and it was obvious they were talking about us as they were standing there looking at us and talking- completely unprofessional- it wasn’t like we were only drinking water (not that it should matter), we had a drink each extra including alcoholic beverages. The hostess was very rude to myself who is a young girl but when my father spoke to them about the situation they were respectful. I have medical issues and as a result need to drink a lot of water, why should we be forced to pay 3.80€ for ONE litre of water when the supermarket up the road we can buy TWELVE litres of water for 3.40€ (which yes we did drink in our room because I wasn’t putting my health at risk just so the hotel could profit). If your water prices weren’t so extortionate we may not have so much of an issue paying them. If you can provide water at breakfast with no additional charge, doing this at dinner also should not be a problem. We decided not to dine in the ocean restaurant again for dinner after how we were treated, despite having already paid for it. On a different day I had an issue with my key not working so went to reception and the first question asked was ‘did you put it next to your phone?’ And I’m the first person to admit when I’ve done that but I actually hadn’t it was in a totally different pocket, however when I said ‘no’ she tutted and rolled her eyes at me… is this really how you condone treating customers in a supposed 5* hotel? She then asked room number and the name it was under; maybe this was a miscommunication but I didn’t know if she wanted the booking name or my name. I am from a ‘broken’ family and so do not share the same surname as my parents. I provided the booking name and she just glared at me then repeated the question of ‘what name?’ As if I was an idiot. I made a point of saying my name or booking name. The entire time she dismissed me and acted like I was a lying criminal- I understand for safety purposes you need to know but she did not need to treat me like that. Yet again my father had the same issue with the key and was not treated even close to what I was, she gladly helped him sort his key out and didn’t ask him any of the questions I got asked which again is pretty vile to think I’m being treated differently as a paying customer based on being a young girl. The indoor pool, that took us days to find because we thought the only indoor pool available was the one at the spa which costs extra. Although when we found it we were yet again disappointed, the tiles are covered in mould (the ones that are there) and to make it worse we found a piece of chewing gum in the place of a missing tile that had been there so long it was black! (Attached photos of both) The hotel advertise there is a jacuzzi and sauna but the jacuzzi (small and pretty useless) didn’t even have water in it and the sauna wasn’t on supposedly because of covid, however in the welcome book it is advertised there is a jacuzzi and sauna in the spa so that’s either false advertising (if those also aren’t currently in use) or again them trying to get more money out of you (because the free ones aren’t in use but the paid for ones are so that negates their covid excuse for the free ones… pictures attached). The pool itself wasn’t even tiled it had some cheap lino material that was lifting in many places causing bubbles- another example of the hotel trying to be cheap and cut corners. Should be noted if you aren’t coming in the height of summer the infinity pools are freezing cold because the hotel is too cheap to heat them even the smallest amount. The only reason this isn’t 1* is because of the breakfast, the variety of breakfast is so much better than the awful dinners with very little variety other than a salad bar and deserts which mainly consist of a cake and panna cotta. Breakfast also has all drinks included (only grievances are one of the apple juices and orange juices is watered down for some reason and the coffee is so unbelievably bitter it’s practically undrinkable) and also had a bubbly which is a nice addition. The chefs making eggs were always so helpful and friendly. It’s one of the better buffet breakfast I’ve had with variety from waffles to French toast to stewed fruit and lots of savoury choices. It’s a real shame dinner is so different in a bad way. Finally when booking the room we paid extra for a bottle of wine to be placed in each one, I don’t think the hotel could have chosen a worse bottle of wine if they tried! It was completely unpalatable and just vile. Again there are some very nice and affordable wines in Madeira that aren’t €2.79 (likely the hotel get it even cheaper in bulk) but of course the hotel don’t actually care about what it taste like or the guest they just want to make it as profitable as possible. I couldn’t finish a single glass. Don’t bother wasting your money on it! This hotel is trying to be something it isn’t, if you want to market the hotel as 5* then you need to be willing to spend the money in making it 5* and you will also attract customers who know what 5* should be so you won’t get away with cutting corners and tacky money grabbing tactics like forcing people to buy YOUR bottled water and nothing else. By marketing yourself as 5* you will also be directly compared to competitors and unfortunately for you that only makes everything look so much worse. I highly suggest the managers of this hotel visit a true 5* such as your neighbour up the road the savoy palace… you could really learn a lot from a chain of hotels that have established themselves globally for their high quality hospitality and don’t cut corners in an attempt to save a buck. Your location is not enough in the colder months to overlook the many issues within the hotel, yes the location you have acquired is without a doubt priceless but the hotel does not match this paradise of a view.

Thanks to the Vidamar team for a wonderful week. There was nothing that they couldn't do for us and handled requests with speed and ease. We tested out all the restaurants that were open and had great meals every time. The resort was clean and the pool area relaxing. Not a bad word to say. As it is so centrally located, we could walk to Funchal with ease and sometimes got taxis back. The Christmas lights are incredible. Thanks to the friendly Vidamar team. Our whole experience on Madeira Island was so refreshing. Friendly, respectful of Covid measures and as two female travellers we always felt safe. Such a warm respectful culture - if only the UK was the same. It was a welcomed relief to be away from the realities of home life and experience peace and tranquility. Never change, Madeira.
