When planning our 18 day vacation to northern Spain and Portugal, we decided to include Porto, the Palace of the Dukes of Braganza, and the Pousada Mosteiro Guimaraes in our itinerary. Boy, did we hit the jackpot! Guimaraes, where the Palace of the Dukes of Braganza is located, is a beautiful historic town with lots of quaint shops. Indeed, it...

We have always loved to stay in a Pousada and when we planned our trip to North Portugal (March 9-16), it seemed logical that we booked the Posada Mosteiro in Guimaraes since this university city was on our must see list and also because all reviews were almost unanimously very positive. This Pousada is majesticly located high on a hill...

This magnificent former monastery has been wonderfully transformed into a living museum-like luxury hotel. It sits high up on the hill above Guimarães (a short taxi/drive away) with awesome views. You will get some exercise here walking the lengthy corridors and gardens. The monks' cells have been recreated into bedrooms - we stayed in what appeared to be two cells/rooms...

A stunning hotel in an old converted monastery which keeps true to its character and heritage. Plenty of courtyards and small areas to just sit, read and relax. Lovely decent sized pool which was nice and quiet in the mornings, busier later in the day. Great food in the restaurant but not cheap. There are plenty of choices for food...

We stayed 2 days here and loved every minute of it. The room was wonderful. The staff, led by Andre was very attentive. We ate dinner in the hotel restaraunt and were blown away by the food and presentation. When we had to leave early in the morning to get our rental car back to the airport the staff prepared...

Located near the city of Guimarães this awesome Pousada is a place you have to stay at least once in your life. Ancient monastery converted to luxury hotel. Large and beautiful living rooms and halls. The rooms are situated in the ancient monks cells. They are medium size, cozy and clean. There is a beautiful garden where you can take...

We spent 3 nights here as part of a tour group of 38 and loved it. The staff, architecture, grounds, food and location are excellent so I suppose the question is 'why not 5 stars ?' In my opinion a rating of 5 stars means it was faultless and I have to say that there are just a few minor...

Dear Customer, we're glad you've enjoyed your stay. It is said that the Monastery was donated by D. Mafalda (wife of D. Afonso Henriques - first king of Portugal) to the canons of Saint Augustin order (1154). Hope to welcome you again in Pousadas de Portugal. Best regards

As other reviewers have said, this is an interesting and very beautiful building, with lovely mature gardens and many grand rooms to explore. We had one of the old monk's rooms, which was suitably austere in appearance but very comfortable. At the end of the corridor, and next to our room, was the beautiful sheltered balcony/terrace area with tiles and...

The hotel is located on a hillside above Guimaraes in a former 12th-century monastery, first belonging to the Order of St. Augustine, and then to the Order of St. Jerome. Get more convenient by taxi. From the city center it takes only 5-7 minutes and costs about 5 euros. Fantastically beautiful romantic place. Excellent view of the Guimaraes. An incredibly...

We stayed at this hotel for one night while visiting Guimaraes. The hotel is set in what used to be a monastery and if is outside of the town on a hillside (you'll need a car to get there). The staff was very welcoming and polite and we were given a room on the first floor in the historic wing....
