We arrived from a long trip from the states at the Athens Gate tired and well you know. The staff are extremely welcoming. Our room looked out at the ruins---great view! Room was basic but very clean we opened the doors to the balcony and enjoyed the notice of the city! We started with a bottle of Greek wine at...

The Athens Gate is a very nice hotel, with a fantastic location overlooking the Acropolis. The rooftop restaurant has a terrific view with great food for breakfast or dinner. The staff were very nice and helpful. Highly recommended.

We were checked in by Vasilis whose a friendly person and he also guided us on directions perfectly. We chose this hotel to stay at because of their claims of the view of the temple of Zues and Acropolis and indeed it did, especially at breakfast on the rooftop. My wife and I enjoyed the views so much that we...

Don't know why this hotel is so highly rated. An old concrete building, renovated, rooms are large, but hotel faces a very busy street and you can hear the traffic even up on the 6th floor. Nice room, but no fluffy towels or upscale toiletries. Nice rooftop restaurant, but not exactly a great view of the Parthenon. Breakfast was included,...

Stayed at Athens Gate May 13-15 for a short visit to Athens. The hotel is located close to the Plaka district. Temple of Zeus is across the street and you will have a great view of the Acropolis from the rooftop restaurant. Location is perfect and a stone's throw from everything you want to do and visit in Athens.Front desk...

The hotel is in a great location. It is walking distance from the acropolis, and just across the road from the Temple of Zeus. However, the rooms are small and very hot. The air conditioning was not enough to address the heat (and this was May!). It is quite noisy, both outside and inside noise. Noise from the corridor was...

Great location with the Temple of Zeus across the street and a view of the Acropolis behind the hotel. Within 5 minutes or less of the Plaka. Had a standard room with terrace. It did not have a view of the Temple or Acropolis but was absolutely ok, especially for the one night I was there. Buffet breakfast was sufficient,...

This is a gem. The location is sensational. Everything you want to see in the heart of Athens is literally just around the corner. For older travellers especially the distances are perfect. Breakfast on the rooftop is amazing. Staff are gorgeous and helpful. Rooms are small but incredibly comfortable.

Great breakfast . Very nice view of the city from the roof and from the room. There's no double glazing of the widows, so it's noisy at night. The staff was very kind and helpfull and we changed a room, which was without view but silent

Staying in Thissio / Makriyanni

Neighbourhood Profile
Thissio / Makriyanni
Named after the well-preserved Thission (ancient temple of Hephaestus), Thissio is blessed with a small wooded park and some less frenetic streets that offer numerous quieter places to stay and eat. Largely pedestrianised Apostolou Pavlou Street runs between the Acropolis and forested Filopappou Hill, well worth climbing for more great panoramas, until it merges with Dionysiou Areopagitou Street. This leads to the up-and-coming area of Makriyanni, whose centrepiece is the magnificent new Acropolis Museum. Opposite the museum is the entrance to the southern slopes of the Acropolis, while the eponymous metro station nearby is at the top of Makriyanni Street, another strip of touristic cafés and restaurants.
