The only downside is that you must pay for use of computers and renting towels. There is a rooftop bar and every visitor gets a free welcome shot each (we were lucky to get a few extra as we had just received our exam results). The staff are very friendly. However the rooftop bar does close quite early at around... More

Loved it, I stayed in a 6 person mixed dorm and everyone else in my room was also travelling on their own so it was perfect. Hostel is super clean, they have huge lockers you can rent and smaller ones in the rooms that you can put your own lock on. They offer loads of services like walking tours and... More

We spent two days in Athens to do a bit of sightseeing before spending two weeks out on a little island of Poros. The Backpackers was in the perfect spot for just what we wanted to do in Athens, which was to see the Acropolis and the new Acropolis museum. We stayed in one of the family rooms, which was... More

Firstly, the good thing about this place is its location. It's also easy to find. I arrived and was greeted by a really unfriendly girl! Granted, the other people on the desk later that evening were marginally nicer. It has this 'We are extremely cool and you are lucky to have got a bed for the night' attitude. The dorm... More

The hostel has 2 different buildings, but i've only been in one of them, the staff of the hostel is very good and they are friendly, the rooms are always very clean and the bar on the rooftop is very cool, it has an excellent location only a couple of blocks away from the new acropolis museum so is very... I without hesitation would stay here again. My friend and I got a private room with bathroom at this hostel and we stayed for one night in July 2012. It was immaculate and nice. Air conditioning worked well. It was bright and well decorated (simple but nice) but most importantly it was clean. We spent 20 euro each for the... More

We booked this hostel based on its high reviews, only to be disappointed with our stay. We stayed 2 nights in a 6-bed mixed dorm with shared bathroom. Firstly, the staff were not friendly nor hospitable at all. Secondly, the interior was average or looks rather old-ish and not as well decorated as other hostels we have been to. There... More

Athens Backpacker Hostel is very nice. Rooms are clean and cosy, there is bar on the roof where you can see all Athens. The breakfast is very nice too. There is an internet coffee too. You can of course meet a lot of people from everywhere in the world, which is great. Although I think it is a little expensive... More

Athens Backpackers is a very friendly, fun & colourful hostel. It was also the first time I stayed in a hostel and boy I would never turn back. The staff is very friend and they also organize Athen's walking tours. A little expensive during summers but it was worth the price. Rooms are nice and clean and have an card... More

Staying in Thissio / Makriyanni

Neighbourhood Profile
Thissio / Makriyanni
Named after the well-preserved Thission (ancient temple of Hephaestus), Thissio is blessed with a small wooded park and some less frenetic streets that offer numerous quieter places to stay and eat. Largely pedestrianised Apostolou Pavlou Street runs between the Acropolis and forested Filopappou Hill, well worth climbing for more great panoramas, until it merges with Dionysiou Areopagitou Street. This leads to the up-and-coming area of Makriyanni, whose centrepiece is the magnificent new Acropolis Museum. Opposite the museum is the entrance to the southern slopes of the Acropolis, while the eponymous metro station nearby is at the top of Makriyanni Street, another strip of touristic cafés and restaurants.
