Disappointing and outdated / Disaster Hotel - avoid at all cost From 03 - 07 Nov 2021 we stayed in this hotel in Heraklion, a taxi ride should be around 10-12min and not cost more then 10€ although taxi drivers will try and rip-you-off and charge 17€, Greek Islands are becoming like Turkey here. A sad and bad development! We traveled during the Corona Pandemic, which did lead to many let downs in a 5***** service of this hotel. Many reviews said the staff was great and friendly, however wouldn’t you expect this of a 5***** hotel? Many said the roof top pool is amazing, but don’t you want to sleep good as well? We arrived 17:45 (5:45pm) and there was no luggage service and no welcome drink. Summary: The room was standard with 26m2 and a decent size balcony only very partially overlooking the harbor - for which we paid extra via Booking.com and thus is overrated. The room had very limited amenities, no body lotion, no makeup (removal-) pads (no stocking of cotton swaps next day), no free bottles of water, in another review on TripAdvisor we read additional water bottles would be at an extra charge, not what you would expect from a 5***** hotel (especially when 0.5L water costs 0.15€ in a supermarket, thus for hotel can be ordered in bulk for <0.05€). The hotel replied in that review with: this was due to their eco-label, however no where in the hotel was it indicating it was doing anything extra for the environment. Sounds to us like Corona-Reductions many hotels have implemented to reduce cost due to declining tourism. The bed was terrible, the pillows and mattress gave no support and were super outdated, no choice of pillows offered which you would expect in a 5***** hotel, we had 2 or more pillows in 3/4 star hotels. I went through my back sleeping in this hotel and was feeling terrible for 2 days. The bathroom was flawed as the shower was opposite the toilet and thus the toilet gets wet after a shower…, the cleaning of the room was moderate. Floor showed wear and tear stains which gave a non-5***** impression and the room felt cold, and not cosy. The numbers: -Price/Quality: 2.5** of 5***** (~€ per 4 nights) -Price: $$$1/2 of $$$$$ -Quality: 2** of 5 -Service at Reception: 2** of 5 -Service Overall: 2** of 5 -Services Breakfast: 3*** of 5 -Wheelchair Accessible: 1* of 5: the hotel lobby seems inaccessible (no ramp from uphill street side walk) otherwise there is a super small elevator -Overall rating: 2** The Breakfast The breakfast was from 07:00 - 10:00 and during the pandemic you expect longer opening hours due to prevention of large crowds gathered also we were not greeted warmly and just asked: “room number” and pointed to wear plastic gloves (not eco-friendly) instead of disinfect your hands before entering the breakfast room. Employees didn’t all cover their nose with face masks and didn’t wear gloves themselves so these extra corona measurements are flawed! How do I know the personnel is corona safe? The breakfast itself missed real typical Greek food, only 1 “Crete Cheese” was available and and 2 kinds of olives (we suspected from a jar didn’t taste authentic Greek and too watery), some Greek pastries, 1 Greek pide bread filled with soft cheese was very nice, however the offer was not what I am used to from other Greek 4/5* hotels in Athens or Mykonos or Rhodos. The other food items were pretty standard like edam cheese, ham and scrambled eggs. The coffee was great in contrast. Tea however not as it was Lipton and not some fancy brand or Greek authentic mountain tea as served on the National Greek airline: Aegean. The Room We stayed in room 418-4rd floor. Room was standard and didn’t show signs of executive style as per Booking.com advertising and was 26m2 and with a limited partial view of the harbor, thus no reason to pay extra for that. The balcony has a high separation which is non-glass thus blocks the view when sitting down. The bed was terrible, the pillows and mattress gave no support and were super outdated, no choice of pillows offered which you would expect in a 5***** hotel, we had 2 or more pillows in 3/4 star hotels. I went through my back sleeping in this hotel and was feeling terrible for 2 days and it lasted 2 weeks in total. The internet was medium-good it was working well in the room and almost perfect on the balcony. The room provide a modest closet, plenty of laying space, 6 hangers for clothes, no bath ropes, 2 pairs room slippers, outdated TV “none-smart TV” and only 40 channels mostly Greek or some news channels. The reading chair was old and not 5***** like, what you would expect, and separate work desk which was completely empty, no pen or writing paper. Which could have been provided packed in plastic as was done with the TV-remote (if they wanted to add extra corona protection). The level of inconsistency doesn’t add up. Room didn’t give a warm or cosy character. No iron or iron board in the room and a safe of medium quality (can’t fit laptop). Which should be available according to EU standard for 5***** hotel per EEIG EU Standard. The Bathroom The shower was great, there were 2 types; 1 rain-shower and 1 wall shower which could be detached for hair washing. The sink was large and provided plenty space, however no illuminated shaving or beauty mirror, there were no amenities (only 1 big shower gel/hair shampoo in-one tube) and a medium quantity blow dryer. This should be available according to EU standard for 5***** hotel per EEIG EU Standard. NOTE: see comment above on toilet vs shower and wet floor! We would not stay here again. It was a great disappointment.

Stayed for just a few days this time but hotel and staff were excellent as always. Good range at breakfast and we could still eat outside even in October. Excellent pool area on top floor with a perfect view to the harbour and out to sea. Zoe in the Aegeo Spa was both pleasant and professional and worked wonders on my back and shoulder after many hours travelling to Crete. All necessary safety precautions are in place and I definitely recommend a trip to the Spa if staying at the Aquila Atlantis.

Our last hotel was so bad that anything would be better but the Aquila Atlantis is in truth a nice hotel. It is very well located to see Heraklion. The food both for breakfast, lunch and dinner is excellent. My only issue is that when I checked in I reminded them I had asked for a quiet room not facing a street. The answer “Madam, all our rooms face the street. We are a city hotel! But they are quiet since we have soundproof windows.” Not true. There are rooms that face an inner courtyard (I found this out day 2) and the room is nowhere near soundproof with the plans flying overhead, the dog park outside our window and the motorcycles. So I am disappointed that I was misled. And the head of the dining room wore his mask on his chin the entire 4 days! That being said, it is a nice and safe hotel.

Perfect choice to stay in Heraklion, central to most popular sites. Rooms were clean and comfortable! For us, like a firm comfortable bed and found it to be just that. Breakfast choices were vast, tasty, and served at right temperatures. COVID protocols followed throughout entire hotel and departments. Customer service was top notch! Friendly and extremely helpful. Need to give a special thank you to Katerina, you're the best!

What a pleasure to arrive here after driving all around the island. Didn't have to worry about parking since porter put our rental car in hotel garage. Enjoyed rooftop pool with its great views. Room service was prompt and food excellent. Air conditioning highly effective and luxurious bathroom. Best part though was the bed where I had some of the best sleep I can recall -- probably thanks to mattress topper. Only negative in our top floor room was loud whistling when a storm came through our final day. Would definitely return.
