It' s the Icelandic word for "biscuit" and a social hostel in Reykjavik. What's not to love? Housed in an old biscuit factory in the heart of Reykjavik, KEX is just steps from all the bars, clubs, and music venues that give this city its legendary reputation. It's also a painless distance from late night munchies and a mind-boggling array of coffee houses, shops, and tourist attractions. Of course, you might not even want to venture outside of the hostel with all its features: a cafe and bar, lounge area, heated outdoor patio, tourist information desk, laundry room, and free Wi-Fi. Two guest kitchenettes and private laundry facilities are also available. And with a variety of rooms for up to 214 guests, you'll have no problem meeting interesting, new travel buddies from exotic places. KEX oozes with personality and soul-just like our guests. Every piece of decor has a story to tell. Using salvaged materials and found objects from various sources, KEX is an organic concept blending Iceland' s past with a modern, international twist. The raw industrial spaces and vintage furnishings combine to give it a homey, eclectic feel. With the affordable nightly rates, you'll still have enough cash left over to enjoy a few pints of Viking beer or sample some local delicacies like hakarl and Brennivin. In addition to our dormitory rooms we offer three different double rooms: 1. Double Plus - 1 double bed, 1 private bathroom, linens and towels, and 1 fantastic seaside view. 2. Double Standard - 1 double bed (of the most clever convertible design in case you get tired of being so close to your travel partner), shared bathrooms, linens and towels, and if you are lucky the same fantastic view. 3. Twin - 2 single beds, linens and towels, and a better than average chance of making your friends back home quite jealous indeed. LOCATION: KEX is located in the center of Reykjavik, with a view across the sea to Mt. Esja across the bay. The old factory that houses KEX is also home to The Living Art Museum and studios of various artists, dancers, and fashion designers. KEX is within an easy walking distance to the city's interesting nightlife, restaurants, shopping streets, cultural attractions, and other points of interest in the city center. To reach those places a little further afield, the hostel is well connected to the city's public bus system.

Fantastic experience for the family, travelled with my 16,15 and 12-year-old and booked a 6 bunk room. Clean, comfortable, warm. Great bar and recreational room to chill in. Beer and pizza more affordable than most places. Ideally located. Great buzz about the place and really helpful reception ( thanks Solveig !)

The Kex Hostel was fun. It was simple and accommodating. It had plenty of showers/bathrooms and common areas. The bar serves pizza and it was very good. Location is key here too. Will definitely stay again on our next visit.

First time doing a hostel, so wasn't sure quite what to expect. I was made to feel very welcome, staff are lovely and always happy to help. So as a kind gesture back, I made them fish soup. Rooms are comfortable and I slept well and was warm. Place is very clean and absolutely recommend staying here.. oh yes I am still here 😉 and I will be back. Thank you room 319, bed 37

Excellent location, attentive staff, fabulous location, well run hostel. Reception desk will help you book any excursion you’d like. Good buffet breakfast available ($14). Free coffee and tea. Kitchens on two floors if you want to eat your own food. Cleaning team is attentive. Highly recommend Kex Hostel!

Conflicted… like many reviews here. It’s a very cute space and the rooms are cute as well, but you won’t get any sleep. All the rooms are facing the courtyard, where people are often very loud until late in the night. The rooms are stuffy so if the window is open the noise is overwhelming. It’s more of a place for younger people who want to party in my opinion.

This is the loudest hostel I've ever stayed at. It could be that I'm too old to find the noise level fun, but there's really no consideration from the hostel or other guests for music volume in communal spaces. The bathrooms are moldy, and the rooms are so dark that unless it's the middle of the day you need to use your flashlight to find your things even with the overhead light on. Is just not worth the cost.

Screaming drunk people and room shaking terrible pop club music until the small hours on a Wednesday. Do not stay here if you want to sleep. No warning given and no public event listing. Staff told me it was a 'private party' and that these events can happen at any time with no notice. For the price of my deluxe double I could have gotten an ordinary hotel room somewhere else in town, but I thought it looked like a quirky and cute option. My mistake, this is clearly not somewhere to stay if you can afford anything else.

We stayed in this hostel for 2 different nights. Both rooms located on the 3rd floor and there are a lot of stairs . not very convenience for people who travels with whole family and have a lot of luggages. There are washroom and showers, we did not find issue when need to use them, there is usually no wait time. ' There is also a dinning area located on the 3rd floor with Microwave and Fridge. Tables and areas are very clean. The only issue is the room. I find the room is very smelly and there is a leak on in the room. Water is dripping from the ceiling and the floors looks water damage for a long time and the leak issue did not get repaired. The surrounding can be very loud until 12am Check in and Check out are very easy . hosts are friendly and easy going. It is an average place for a short stay in town.

Great hostel, thoughtfully decorated, charging ports at the beds, equipped kitchen, enough bathrooms, not too expensive bar downstairs. The staff was very nice and even let me borrow their phone It IS very loud at night, even from the top floor, they provide free earplugs but those only do so much. If you're a light sleeper, and want to sleep "on time" due to plans in the morning.. it will be impossible. The doors slam really loud, I'd advice something that just makes it close a bit slower
