This is a difficult place to rate because it varies widely. I booked the 42 person dorm and quickly found out it was not an ideal situation for me, almost purely due to bathrooms. I ended up switching hotels to better enjoy my vacation. However, it probably would’ve been much more feasible had I booked a dorm with less people or a private room. I recognize this is more my bad so it’s whatever, but I personally would not recommend the larger dorms. There were only a few bathrooms to share and the showers that I saw was just a room full of shower heads, so no privacy. I likely would’ve been able to deal with the sleeping arrangement, but I found this to be lacking too much. This could be different for other rooms, but this was my experience. (I also physically did not reside in the hostel for long) Everything else about this place was fantastic! I did wind up spending a lot of time here, but just not for overnights. Socially, it’s the perfect hangout spot and great for making new friends! I felt safe the entire time I was there and everyone I spoke with was very friendly. There’s a lovely bar and several common areas about and concerts are even held downstairs. The location is also super optimal and is close to most things in the downtown area. Most tour companies also pick up from here. Again, my review is based more on my booking of the 42 person dorm. Otherwise, my review would be much higher. I recommend a smaller room with less people.…
Very good located hostel, all tour companies I booked with had this hostel as a pick up/drop off location which was handy. Everyone I met was considerate of others. Found the pizzas to be good. Didn’t use the self catering kitchen however it look like it had all the essentials. Overall, a good stay in a well located hostel.
The staff was friendly and helpful. The other travelers were considerate of others. Everyone gravitated towards the kitchen, so it was easy to make friends and find others to do things with. The kitchen is stocked with essentials and cabinets of food that can be shared so check to see what there is before you go to the grocery store. The bar was my favorite bar I went to in Reykjavik.
Amazing hostel in the city center of Reykjavik. We booked a room for 6 people for three of nights and our stay was excellent. The hostel met all the requirements that we were looking for and the decoration/ atmosphere of the place was also very cool and cozy. All the staff was very nice and responsive to our questions and requests. We would like to specially mention Tómas (reception desk), who was very kind to us and helped us a lot during our stay. Totally recommended!
Perfect location!! Walking distance to everything. Like groceries, restaurants, Downtown Reykjavik is just a few minutes walk. The hostel style is like an old antique building. The only thing that I don’t like is the lighting in the toilet was very very poor. Dark and can hardly see if its dirty or what. Staffs are friendly and my room was great.
I just came for lunch to meet other Americans. No one was at the bar to order. When a man finally showed up, he was surly. It took too long for my pizza to be made—about 40 minutes. The place is quirky but a bit of a dive. I wouldn’t recommend it, and I won’t be back.
LOUD DOORS IN THE DORM ROOMS People just come in and out of the rooms and slam the doors - literally every one or two minutes the doors are slamming making it very hard to sleep The restaurant and outdoor patio are totally awesome and I would love to stay here again but not in a dorm room… would be worth it ponying up for a private here. Tip : avoid the dorm rooms if you have an early flight and don’t want to drink yourself into a coma to avoid being woken up every 5 minutes
I really enjoyed my 2 night stay at Kex. There are 2 communal kitchens and plenty of space to store your food. I have read that it is noisy on the lower floors because of the bar but I was on the 4th floor and it was great. The blinds block the sun pretty good which is nice when it never gets dark out. The location was fantastic, right next to the water and within walking distance of lots of attractions and shopping in Reykjavik. The bathrooms were also super nice for a hostel - there are normal bathrooms with stalls, plus individual bathrooms with shower+toilet+sink in one.
Fabulous location and good for meeting new people in the common spaces. Bar on second floor made it difficult to get a good night’s sleep, especially when music played late Friday night and we had an early Saturday morning flight. Noise in the hallway was also an issue for us.
Great location right by the action on Laugavegur St, warm staff, and spaces to meet people and lively bar atmosphere! Dorms were comfortable, WC services were sufficient. Stayed the night, stop in Reykjavik to sample the city.
