Attended with work for a Christmas meal in December. The room we ate in was lovely and it was warm but the food was lacking. The venison terrine was tasteless, as agreed by everyone who chose this. The beef main was tasty and the portion was generous. Dessert was OK. Paying the bill was a challenge. As there were a number of us, staff struggled to work out what was left to pay and no bill was given. Ended up leaving just to get away, not very professional.
Loved locally for a number of years before moving out of the area so had always heard good things about the Norton house so I was looking forward to my 2 night stay but it wasn’t what I expected. Most of the staff struggled to be friendly don’t get me wrong they did job well just not welcoming. The room was very noisy hearing every movement from other rooms meaning no chance of sleep after 6:30 am. She bathroom is as not very clean and the shower head disgusting. The girl serving breakfast was really nice and really friendly food was good but had mouldy toast on last morning All in all not good and much better places around the area
Had a family Christmas meal here on Saturday. Everything was absolutely fantastic. Food and service was 5 star from start to finish. The beef I had was probably the best piece I’ve EVER eaten. I’m 60 and I’ve eaten plenty of beef 😄. Will without doubt visit again when I’m down that way. Thank you to everyone involved in providing such a special day
We have been to the Norton House hotel on many occasions in the past, and always been very happy with the food and service. That is no longer the case. We were there last night, 9 December 2021, in a group of 15 people. We had all chosen our meals weeks in advance, so the hotel had no surprises on the night. Staff were pleasant and polite, but the organisation could have been better. The tables were attractively laid, but our table had water glasses but no water, which was not offered when service started. My husband had to request water partway through the meal. When our first courses were served we were halfway through them before someone came around with rolls. One lady who had ordered soup had great difficulty in obtaining it, heaven knows why. My husband and I had the same starter - smoked salmon with tian of prawns - and that really was good, absolutely up to the standard that we expect of the Norton House. Unfortunately it all went downhill from there. I had turkey (which was good) and my husband pork, which he said was acceptable, One person on our table had venison and others beef, all of which were pretty good. The problem was with the vegetables. The sprouts were cannonballs and very difficult to cut. They were not 'al dente', they were hard and almost raw. The cabbage which had been lurking under the meat might possibly have been blanched, but equally could have been raw. The roast potatoes were not crisp and golden, far from it, and the lady who had ordered her meal without fondant potatoes was given them, and had to request an alternative. There was no cranberry sauce offered for those of us who had turkey, which was a disappointment. The desserts were no better. One lady ordered sticky toffee pudding which arrived without any accompaniment of custard or cream or ice cream. When she asked if she could have cream with it she was rather brusquely told that there was raspberry sauce on it and that was how it came. The raspberry sauce consisted of decorative swirls on the plate. My husband chose treacle almond tart, which he found difficulty getting his spoon into, as he said it was very hard. I had chocolate torte, which was dry underneath and hard on top, and was served with a little swirl of cream and half a strawberry. The flavour was acceptable, but I can’t say I enjoyed it. The little mince pies which came with our tea and coffee were much nicer. All in all, a disappointing meal - the first time that has ever happened at the Norton House. I appreciate that there was another party in at the same time, but that has been the case on many previous occasions when we have been to the Norton House, and never before have we had substandard food and service.…
Very impressed with room. Very large with seating area and nice shower. Breakfast was very good and came.quickly. only down side is we were near laundry room and they left the door open all night so you couldn't open the window for the noise. Also the fence gate intonthe laundry area needs fixing. It was held closed by a break which kept moving and the gate kept banging.
