Restored to its former glory, The George Hotel has proudly sat on Colchester High Street in Essex for over 500 years. It has always been at the centre of bustling life in England’s oldest recorded town and with historical artefacts, feature beams and period features it really is one of a kind and a place to remember! Guests are welcomed to a lavish stay in our beloved hotel full of charm and history. Featuring a stylish bar, lounge and restaurant, The George offers free Wifi throughout and parking is available to the rear of the building. The 49 heritage guest en-suite rooms are decorated in warm tones, have super comfortable beds and smart TVs, while the individual suites boast emperor beds, some bathrooms with freestanding bath, Bang & Olufsen sound systems and coffee machines. All rooms are full of designer touches and the period features you would expect from a hotel of this age. The town and hotel have proven links to Queen Boudica and the historic Colchester castle is a mere 2 minute walk from the hotel. We are just a 15 minute drive from Beth Chatto Gardens and Colchester Zoo, with Constable country the beautiful Essex coast just a bit further away. Guests can enjoy cocktails, local draught lagers and ales and an extensive wine list from the contemporary bar. Dine in the relaxed two-tiered restaurant that offers a daily a la carte menu inspired by British and worldwide cuisines, using locally sourced and seasonal produce. If you fancy a lighter bite for lunch or a snack, the tapas menu is also available in the heated and magical Secret Courtyard with beautiful Moroccan and floral decor. Quintessential English Afternoon tea will be served in the new Tea Room, ’T at The George’ - an eclectic Victorian-themed experience giving you the chance to indulge with friends over freshly brewed tea, delicious sandwiches, fresh scones and sweet treats (Opening mid summer 2021)

First opportunity to be able to return to this hotel for many years, recently renovated which has been carried out without losing the character of this iconic building and hotel. The service was excellent, the bar staff were helpful and friendly as were the restaurant staff. We had a very enjoyable lunch, the menu is limited but more than adequate. A very pleasent visit, looking forward to returning again.

The George brings a very street and neoclassical style to it's communal areas that perfectly blends the Georgian and Modern eras. A brilliant ambience to have when at the heart of Britain's oldest town. The bar and secret courtyard are worth checking out just for the vibe alone. Food decent if not slightly overpriced and the drinks are simply divine. Stayed here for one night at short notice which may have caused slight problems. On arrival, found the bed had not been flipped and there were no towels or toiletries. When asked, we received some hand towels but not much else. Room Service is difficult past a certain time. The TV is decent but certain features advertised do not work and the WIFI can be temperamental. Checking In/Out is quick and easy and the staff were pleasant and helpful. The hotel is very suitable for anyone looking to explore Colchester and who won't be spending too much time in their room. It's a very enjoyable environment, close to the Castle and many features the town has to offer but may have you going down to the reception desk more times than one would like.

Room was clean but noisy. Not much in terms of toiletries or drinks or tea/coffee facilities in the room. We returned for a nightcap before bed to be told the bar was closed and wouldn’t offer any room service at all. The breakfast was very disappointing awful coffee, tepid breakfast, lacked taste and quality. Staff were not very welcoming or over friendly. We was very disappointed with our stay and will not be returning. It seems to of had a make over decor wise but a huge un improvement in service to how it used to be when we used to visit.

Dear Voyager07320820725, I am sad to hear that you did not enjoy your stay at the George Hotel Colchester. At the moment we are not doing room service past 10PM. However we are working hard on attracting more amazing people to be a part of our team, so we can provide exceptional service 24/7. Hopefully very soon there will be room service available any given time of the day and night. At the moment all guests can call reception and ask for more tea and coffee to be sent to their room. We regret to hear that your stay did not live up to your expectations, and thanking you for spending time to leave a review which helps us improve our Hotel. Sincerely hope you will restore your faith in The George Hotel, and pay us another visit. Warmest regards, Sofya Myakoshina

We recently had our wedding reception at the George hotel. We also stayed in the apartment for two nights, had multiple guests staying in the main hotel and used the private Tudor room for the reception. All were absolutely fantastic! The guests mentioned how amazing their rooms were and we were also very happy with the apartment. On the day, the staff were so attentive to our needs, we couldn't fault a thing! Highly recommend!

Wow. What a difference 2 years makes. The hotel has changed beyond all recognition from then, and very much for the better. The refurbishment has raised the bar significantly. Stylish and comfy bar and lounge and upmarket restaurant. My room is tastefully decorated and immaculate. The food and service in the restaurant has been top notch. Hugely impressed and hope to be back soon. Well done . 👍
