Excellent location, just off the town centre and really quiet. We stayed in the Coach House which was quiet and although a small room the beds were really comfortable. Friendly and helpful host. The accommodation was really clean as was the pub. Lovely little beer garden too. Well presented breakfast in the morning. Overall a great hotel, we just thought...

Wonderful food and beautifully presented, all fresh and delicious. Great service and even decaf coffee was fresh and not instant like many restaurants do. Best meal I have had for ages and I wish this place was near my home I would be there every week

This is an olde world style inn, comfortable, clean and handy for the centre of town. The rooms are quaint and more than acceptable. We were booked in for bed and breakfast but decided to eat there in the evening as well. Thank goodness we did, the food is superb! Not your regular 'pub grub' more high end restaurant style....

no bad locations in this lil bookshop town. room was cosy, is an old building so there is some character (wavey floor, cosy doorways) bathroom was nice. noise travels up from bar to level 1 - bar closes reasonably early so not a drama. good breakfast too.

The Old Black Lion is set back off the main road (in very short walking distance to the town centre) - so noise from passing traffic was never a problem. My wife and I stayed in the Stable/Coach Block a very short walk from the main pub across the entrance road way. The room was situated up a short flight...

I have stayed a few times, not been here for 12 months ,nice to walk in and feel at home the same staff which says a lot for the owner Dolan. Max the chef served up a great meal as always, we need a walk round the block after dinner then sat outside for a night cap. Great nights sleep in...

This is a beautiful area and the Black Lion is an atmospheric old inn, right in the centre of town with a free car park and walking distance to everywhere. Our room was looking a bit worn to be honest and our daughter's was a bit grubby so these rooms would benefit from a good Spring clean and refurbish throughout....

Stayed at the beginning of May, lovely old pub and I thought the room was nice, food was a bit of a letdown, breakfast was dry and not very nice and orders were wrong more than once, shame would have given a score of 5 if the food was better.

Many B&B has nice double rooms but awful single rooms, while old black lion is not one of them. The single room has enough place and good equipments. Staffs are helpful. Had my dinner there and really enjoyed it, nice lamb chop.

It took an hour and a half to get served. We frequently had to go to the bar to get drinks, because nobody was waiting on us. When we did get served it wasn't with a smile. The prices are higher than in London and the portions are meagre for many of the dishes (some were fine). The quality of...

Official Description (provided by the hotel)
Nestled within the market town of Hay-on-Wye, this colourful 17th Century Inn exudes historical charm and atmosphere offering quality home-cooked food, luxury accommodation and free Wi-Fi and parking. With parts of the original building dating as far back as the 1300’s, the Hotel subtly blends the elegance and whimsy of the past with the comfort and convenience of the present. Indeed, it is even reputed that Oliver Cromwell once stayed at the inn whilst the Roundheads besieged Hay Castle, which was then a loyalist stronghold. Sympathetically refurbished, exposed timber beams and roaring log fires help to cultivate a homely environment and a famously warm welcome. The Inn features 10 high quality en-suite bedrooms, all of which are individually and tastefully decorated in a style reminiscent of the buildings historic past. All rooms include free Wi-Fi access, flat-screen TV, hairdryer, direct dial telephone and tea & coffee making facilities. They offer a choice of Single, Double, Twin and Superior room options. The Old Black Lion is renowned for the quality of its food and has received a host of rewards and accolades including a coveted AA Rosette. The menus, which are changed frequently, use only the best of British produce wherever possible including locally reared meat, fresh seafood from Cornwall and seasonal vegetables. The oak timbered bar with its scrubbed pine tables and comfy arm chairs is the perfect place to relax and enjoy the fantastic selection of local ales (including their own namesake ‘The Old Black Lion’).The Hotel is located in the heart of the Welsh market town of Hay-on-Wye just a short drive from the A438, it also offers free on-site parking for guests. The city of Hereford is roughly 35 minutes away and offers excellent transport links to the rest of the country. For those flying in, Cardiff International Airport is about a 95 minute journey from the Hotel. The Old Black Lion is situated just a three minute walk from the centre of Hay-on-Wye. Renowned internationally as a Mecca for bibliophiles the town offers over 30 bookshops, many selling specialist and second-hand books. It is also home to the annual Hay Festival, Europe’s premier literature and arts festival. The town lies on the east bank of the River Wye and is within the Brecon Beacons National Park, just north of the Black Mountains. Offering some of the most breathtaking scenery in Wales, the surrounding area is a haven for outdoor enthusiasts with both the Offas Dyke Path and Wye Valley Walk passing through the town. ... more   less
