The bottom line is this bar/hotel locally known as The Sal is the most authentic down to earth pub in Kinross where what you see is what you get. The staff are always professional and friendly, the local clientele on the other hand are as down to earth yet predominantly friendly. If what you’re looking for is a quiet, polite and cultured atmosphere-stay well away. If your thing is to experience a slice of no frills Kinross-with the possibility of a fight breaking out now and then-its the place for you. I didn’t spend the night there btw hence my ‘not sure’ responses.

Just to stay in a place full of history for me was enough. There's an retro atmosphere everywhere, people are nice, the room was cozy enough for a single person. I loved to walk in the hotel at night, looking for old ghosts and talking to very old living persons. If you wish to live history, go to this old hotel..

But when you are an experienced traveller you do appreciate value when delivered. Our booking had been stuffed up at an up market Edinburgh hotel, so travelling north we came upon the Salutation. Its not so bad as the other reviewers made out. The room was clean and adequate and everything worked. The hotel doesn't have a restaurant as the bill board advertised but we had a most enjoyable Chinese meal at Mr Chan's on the corner next to the Co-op. Most of all the WiFi was excellent although not available in the room. I have found out in recent travels that the quality of WiFi is indirectly proportional to the opulence of the hotel. At the Salutation I was able to do online banking, credit card transactions and stock market trading on a very secure internet connection.

On arrival we was shown to our room. The room was warm very dated bits on carpet sheets where dirty mattress protector ripped. Mattress you cud feel the springs young colin was good if you asked for anything he was there with it. Breakfast was continental no meals although web site states they are. Clothing left in draws from previous occupants. We couldn't even lock the door from the inside over all our stay here was very poor we definitely will not be using this place again

Our arrival we were shown to two rooms on the top floor we were expecting a triple as it was just us & our daughter but even on the way up my heart sank, tired decor & a dank feel, however the room was a good size, very basic & dated but clean with a TV & good wifi, but it was noticeably cold, & we were told the breakfast would not be a hearty Scottish fry up we were expecting but continental so we informed them we would not require any, my husband went back down to ask about the heating to be told there was a problem with the boiler hence the small oscelating heater, which did heat the room up but was so bright we could not leave it on overnight, so we froze in our separate rooms we went down to the bar to have a drink to be told our 13 year old was not allowed to sit in the bar ( it was approx 6pm) so we were shown to a cold miserable lounge upstairs to sit on our own, Colin the young barman seemed to be covering all areas the hotel the bar, he really looked after us, he was so good, if it were not for his impeccable manner & aim to please we might just of got back in the car & left, it's grim, I'm sure it's a welcome watering hole for the locals who were all very pleasant, but please, please do something about upgrading this place it is not fit for purpose as a hotel as it stands.

Not sure where to start. I am just so grateful that I have a family with such a wonderful sense of humour -I have not laughed for so so long in one night. This place is so very bad, that we had to laugh, and god we laughed!! booking a triple room for my family, we were put in two separate rooms. Both a bit damp, both with no heating, both with a small electric heater, both with decor from a top a top gear wrecking set (1960s caravan wrecking episode) and you have to share the bathroom in the corridor- with who else? On trip advisor 2017 reviews- it tells you that ‘food is very good, and family loved it’ guess what? they don’t serve food, bar is tiny, they don’t allow children etc.. so we where asked to sit up in the lounge ( A dark, grim, cold spare room upstairs) spotted a Chinese takeaway across the road and we sat and ate the carry out (In the cold, badly lit room) Only positive aspect of the place worth a mention was Colin the barman, who visually, but not verbally expressed his sympathy and was extremely pleasant, polite and helpful- so what ever brewery owns this place, please! please! cherish him and treat him right. Give him a pay rise or let him be as good as he is in another more looked after place. As a man who behaves with such generosity, patience and courtesy- despite being in the embarrassing situation to be offering such false advertised/ poor accommodation deserves a medal and a better chance in life. I would suggest that it is seriously revamped, knocked down or turned into a hostel. Cheap? Yes! but very grim accommodation-that could maybe only just rate as being a hostel and never ever as a hotel. I would not recommend this place, even to people I may not like.

Unfortunately, the hotel was in a bit of an upheaval for my overnight stay because of boiler problems and was having to close for 3 days. When I arrived my bedroom was cool so I turned on the radiator and it heated up quickly. As the evening went on it cooled down completely so I went down to the bar to report it. The very helpful barman came up to have a look and after speaking to the owner, returned with a heater, so I didn't have a cold stay. I didn't have breakfast as Colin (mine host) explained that workmen were about to start drilling through the wall and it would be extremely noisy. He was happy to provide me with breakfast but was thinking of my comfort so I went over to the church and had some there. Colin reduced the cost of my stay by quite a bit because of the upheaval so I can't say fairer than that. Thank you Colin. The hotel is very old and a bit tired but my bedroom was very clean and nicely decorated (some drawer handles missing). The kettle wasn't working but there was no problem as I got one from another room. I'm pretty sure the breakfast would have been very good indeed as what was laid out looked inviting. If I'm in the area again, I'd be happy to return. The staff I met and Colin, were extremely friendly and helpful and so was one of the locals I spoke with.

We had booked a room for three (My wife, my step son and myself) and it turned out that there was only a double size bed. I had to sleep directly on the floor and the attendant seemed to not care about the situation. To think about the sign on the wall "Familly friendly" I could almost burst at laugh. I've waited two months before writting this comment to be able to stay polite. To summerize: Just avoid this place.

Clean comfortable, quiet and cosy room. Amazing, tasteful, delicious, and plenty enough home cooked breakfast. They buy food from the local farms so the flavor is incredible. Great bar with friendly local customers. Welcoming staff happy to help and make your accommodation enjoyable. . We will definitely book again
