Detailed Reviews
Unfortunately, the hotel was in a bit of an upheaval for my overnight stay because of boiler problems and was having to close for 3 days. When I arrived my bedroom was cool so I turned on the radiator and it heated up quickly. As the evening went on it cooled down completely so I went down to the bar to report it. The very helpful barman came up to have a look and after speaking to the owner, returned with a heater, so I didn't have a cold stay. I didn't have breakfast as Colin (mine host) explained that workmen were about to start drilling through the wall and it would be extremely noisy. He was happy to provide me with breakfast but was thinking of my comfort so I went over to the church and had some there. Colin reduced the cost of my stay by quite a bit because of the upheaval so I can't say fairer than that. Thank you Colin.
The hotel is very old and a bit tired but my bedroom was very clean and nicely decorated (some drawer handles missing). The kettle wasn't working but there was no problem as I got one from another room. I'm pretty sure the breakfast would have been very good indeed as what was laid out looked inviting. If I'm in the area again, I'd be happy to return. The staff I met and Colin, were extremely friendly and helpful and so was one of the locals I spoke with.

This hotel is in new hands and has just had its exterior beautifully repainted. The restaurant is now serving good, home-cooked food in generous portions and at very reasonable prices. A welcome addition to the middle of Kinross!

Response from Garry S, Head Chef at Salutation Hotel
Responded 19 Nov 2016
Hi AScotsman, Thank you so much for your kind words. We've been working hard the last couple of weeks to get The Crannog open in time for the nights closing in and making sure the restaurant is a warm and cosy place to spend a bit of time eating good food. Please feel free to come back if you're ever passing through Kinross again. Regards, Management.

We took refuge in the bar whilst the weather did its worst! A proper Scottish bar full of proper Scottish locals. Two blokes had a brilliant drunk
argument/ discussion for an hour, we could not understand a single word that was said!

The room was very tired, but clean. We stayed for just one night to attend a friends party. At 4.45 the noise from upstairs was horrendous - loud music, loud sex and loud banter. I don’t know if this is staff quarters or other guests. But as there is no reception or staff in over night - no had no option but to listen to it, until we got a about 8 and left.

Myself and my wife spent 4 nights in Kinross. We popped into the Salutation for a quick drink and ended up staying there for the whole evening.
What a cracking pub, original features, great choice of beverages, the locals were welcoming, and the landlady was very obliging.
That's all you want from a great local pub.
We will definitely pop back in for drinks and good company when we visit Scotland again.
Highly recommended.

Not sure where to start. I am just so grateful that I have a family with such a wonderful sense of humour -I have not laughed for so so long in one night. This place is so very bad, that we had to laugh, and god we laughed!! booking a triple room for my family, we were put in two separate rooms. Both a bit damp, both with no heating, both with a small electric heater, both with decor from a top a top gear wrecking set (1960s caravan wrecking episode) and you have to share the bathroom in the corridor- with who else? On trip advisor 2017 reviews- it tells you that ‘food is very good, and family loved it’ guess what? they don’t serve food, bar is tiny, they don’t allow children etc.. so we where asked to sit up in the lounge ( A dark, grim, cold spare room upstairs) spotted a Chinese takeaway across the road and we sat and ate the carry out (In the cold, badly lit room) Only positive aspect of the place worth a mention was Colin the barman, who visually, but not verbally expressed his sympathy and was extremely pleasant, polite and helpful- so what ever brewery owns this place, please! please! cherish him and treat him right. Give him a pay rise or let him be as good as he is in another more looked after place. As a man who behaves with such generosity, patience and courtesy- despite being in the embarrassing situation to be offering such false advertised/ poor accommodation deserves a medal and a better chance in life. I would suggest that it is seriously revamped, knocked down or turned into a hostel. Cheap? Yes! but very grim accommodation-that could maybe only just rate as being a hostel and never ever as a hotel.
I would not recommend this place, even to people I may not like.

I travel the uk doing tree work for the national grid and utility company's amongst others year in and out so I think I can give a fair review, I happened on this hotel after telling the holiday inn in Edinburgh to keep their hotels from now on (I still paid for 4 nights and never even went there) because I no they have no pets but I had a broken window in my van and they wer happy to have my 15 year old small terrier freeze to death rather than break the rule on Xmas eve for one night so I called at the salutation hotel on my travels and have been here till now and am about to spend New Years eve with some of the friendliest and helpful staff and local people I have ever met in my 30 years of traveling with my work so here is to all of you thanks for having me and my dog it's been a pleasure happy new year and I look forward to seeing you all again soon. And to the holiday inn anywhere in the world sorry but Glenross has finished it for you all, all the best Kinross Scotland United Kingdom xx

Just to stay in a place full of history for me was enough. There's an retro atmosphere everywhere, people are nice, the room was cozy enough for a single person. I loved to walk in the hotel at night, looking for old ghosts and talking to very old living persons. If you wish to live history, go to this old hotel..

We had booked a room for three (My wife, my step son and myself) and it turned out that there was only a double size bed.
I had to sleep directly on the floor and the attendant seemed to not care about the situation.
To think about the sign on the wall "Familly friendly" I could almost burst at laugh.
I've waited two months before writting this comment to be able to stay polite.
To summerize: Just avoid this place.

Clean comfortable, quiet and cosy room.
Amazing, tasteful, delicious, and plenty enough home cooked breakfast. They buy food from the local farms so the flavor is incredible.
Great bar with friendly local customers.
Welcoming staff happy to help and make your accommodation enjoyable. .
We will definitely book again
