I'm not normally a person who complains or reviews often but felt I should after tonight. After reading positive reviews, was very disappointed this evening - hard to find any positives. 1) Inappropriate music - did not expect to hear Outkast or Destinys child playing overly loud when we were seated. Not really what one would expect in a Highland restaurant. 2) There was only ONE white wine available out of a wine list of 12 I think. I must say, the wine available was very nice - that and the courteous waiter are the reasons why this review is 2 stars and not 1. To be this close to the start of tourist season and have only one white wine is laughable and inexcusable. 3) The food. Starters were OK, but nothing more than that - a 5 out of 10. My wife and I both had haddock and chips as a main, possibly the poorest fish and chips I've ever had. In my opinion, oven baked from frozen, chips and the fish. Tasteless and dry. I eat a lot of seafood and this was really poor, 3 out of 10 if that. Can't say we were impressed by the menu either, standard pub fodder. Will certainly not be returning.

Booked last minute for one night with no prior knowledge of the establishment. Enjoyed my stay immensely. This modest hotel succeeds in creating a really homely vibe and is staffed throughout with very decent human beings. I loved my room - a spacious double with a full en suite. A modern and vigorous shower was a huge plus point as was the mini fridge - with enough space to chill two large cans of beer! A Nespresso coffee machine and capsules is another nice touch along with a full range of bathroom essentials - I slept well. I observed a family having lunch in the bar …. the food looked fabulous and I regret that I didn’t have the opportunity to test the chef. I will definitely contrive a reason to come back. An excellent experience overall.

We were on the road and looking for a place to have lunch when we found the Garth Hotel. They just reopened after the holidays. Belinda and Ann welcomed us, lit a fire and brought us a small meal. It felt like we arrived home. That's why we changed our plans for the next days and asked for a room to stay. We had a wonderful time at the Garth Hotel (dinner and breakfast was great too!) and will come back for sure! Thanks again ladies! N. & M. Cataldo

Please note this is a review of the restaurant only. We went in at lunch time on a Sunday after a walk nearby. We were asked if we had a booking - despite there only being 2 other tables occupied, and nobody else coming in while we were there. The staff tried to seat us in a darker corner, but gave us one the several free window seats when we asked. There was no atmosphere or ambience at all. We asked if it would be possible to play some music, at which point they turned on a CD of melancholic 1930/1940s music (we heard someone say it had been repeated several times before). Staff (including the lady on the front desk) generally seemed quite dour and unenthusiastic, and it wasn’t a particularly welcoming experience. The food was distinctly average and had clearly been sat out in the kitchen for a while. Soup was supposedly carrot and orange, but tasted only of carrot. The venison starter had very little venison, and for how it tasted could have been any meat. Meat served with the roast was 2 thin slices. Yorkshire puddings were very dry and lacking taste, some were burnt. Roast potatoes were yellow from the amount of oil, very dry and lacking taste. I’ve never had a soda and lime that tasted so little of lime. Overall a very bizarre and underwhelming experience and wouldn’t recommend.

Decided to stay here given the positive reviews. When we checked in we were met by an extremely dour lady. No warm welcome . No "enjoy your stay ". Later we went down for dinner which we were having in the snug. We had our dog with us. No one took us to our table. The young guy who eventually served us was extremely welcoming. Meal was nice but not exactly as described on the menu. Things missing . In the morning it was a similar story regards us waiting about to be seated or directed to the breakfast buffet. To be honest we felt forgotten about. On check out there was a different lady there who appeared more cheery. However she just sat and watched as my sister and I struggled getting out the door with all our luggage and dog. No offer to even hold the door open. All in all not a great experience or warm highland welcome.

Hi Nikki, Thank you for taking the time to review your stay with us at the Garth Hotel. I do remember talking to you in the snug and going through the description of your dish on the menu to reassure you that you did have the correct accompaniment to your venison. We're sorry you felt forgotten about, that's really not the type of experience we aim to give our guests. I hope that you will accept our apologies and allow us to welcome you back sometime in the near future.

The reception staff were dour (unwelcoming and unsmiling). The room was grubby, skirting boards and edges of the room, also bathroom floor. Breakfast on 3 consecutive mornings was frazzled (dried up around the edges). Toilet flush not working. We had to fill waste bin with water from the bath to flush. On our last day we came back to the room to find an orange banner obliterating our view. No mention of this to us. There were good staff - the receptionist as we left, the young man on breakfast who appeared to be new to the job, the lovely Joan and the handy man. This trip terribly disappointing because we have stayed on a number of occasions. Needless to say after this debacle we will not be back. I have emailed the CEO of the company that owns the Garth but to no avail.

The welcome is warm, the rooms very acceptable and the food the best we found in the area of this agreeable town: there is an artist in the kitchen; full scottish breakfast is for caber tossers At the moment the full enjoyment of this food is rather lowered by the sub-baronial gloom, tartan and shields everywhere, of the dining room and its planned refurbishment will I hope make something much brighter; a few cans of white paint on the hotel outside would also not go amiss

Stayed here for 2 nights whilst visiting a friend who lives in the town, all staff we met were professional and friendly, breakfast was absolutely delicious both mornings and they actually cook there toast properly and not just hot bread!! Had the full Scottish the first morning and avocado and poached eggs on toast the second morning. We ate in the hotel for dinner on the Sunday night and it was a roast, I had beef and my husband the lamb, it was all well cooked, our only criticism is the main came out really quickly after the starter. Room was lovely, a comfy bed, coffee machine and good bathroom with bath and shower. Very squeaky floors but it’s an old old building so can’t be helped, It looks a little tatty from the outside but don’t let that put you off and we would certainly stay here again whilst visiting.
