Decently distanced seating but it still felt so warm and welcoming and full of families, some with children and the odd dog - such a delight.
Plenty of outdoor seating if the weather is clement too.
Obviously the views remain stupendous and our mattress was the best I can remember sleeping on.
On arrival it was clear this place is beautiful. The narrow country lanes that approach the hotel are very well maintained with endless places to let others pass in the opposite direction. No toll keeper on my visit so there was no £2 fee for approaching the hotel.
To check in you must visit the bar depending on what time you arrive. This wasn’t immediately clear to us but everybody is so happy and friendly that we found check in soon enough.
I opted for a room with partial sea views and it was exactly as described. The hotel sits behind the cottages so if you’re renting a room like this you’ll see the sea if you stand at the large sash window. The room was very clean and very pleasant, a little flaky paint but it’s to be expected from an old property battered by the sea.
Breakfast is included and was excellent, completely faultless and delicious. Locally sourced ingredients cooked perfectly.
This place would be a bargain without the surroundings, and gives chain hotels a run for their money price-wise, but the surroundings made this hotel stay very special and next time we’ll return when not on business.
There is literally nothing at the Quay except the hotel and the scenery (and the excellent little museum). But this is all you need when the welcome is so warm, the food is so great, the staff work so hard and smile relentlessly.
And as for the location... it is simply breathtaking.
Do visit the museum. I am so glad we stayed on, on our last day, to wait for opening (11am). It is only £1 to enter and is jam packed full of information and artefacts. I wish we had gone on the fist day now, to put in context what we saw during our stay. There has clearly been so much love and care expended on it, and it is thought provoking and a poignant way of honouring those lost to the sea and sky along the coast over the years.
Our room was immaculately clean, and perfect for our needs. Beds were immensely comfortable, piping hot shower with good pressure, rooms made up daily. Breakfast was delicious, plentiful, and nothing was too much trouble, even with some more tricky fellow guests, We observed the lady taking orders being incredibly gracious with a large party with very particular orders who arrived at the end of service on 2 mornings.
If you don't need much by way of entertainment, this is definitely the place for you to enjoy the hospitality and scenery. Beautiful in summer, with good swimming and beach on your doorstep - and doubtless cosy and romantic in winter. Can't wait to go again.
We stayed in room 12 the family room and I was nervous about the noise from the people drinking outside but I was out like a light by 10:30am. The room was spotless and the bedding felt so soft and luxurious. We weren’t sure about dinner but did stay in the end. My husband declared the chips the best he has ever eaten (he usually eats one/two only) . My 11 yo demolished the adults fish and chips ! I loved the fish cakes and it was nice to have new potatoes for a change and not chips. I rarely have desert but they had Bakewell tart and I couldn’t say no ….. it was my sons first Bakewell … we were both happy , the portion was enough for the three of us !
The location is simply spectacular and I’m already dreaming of a Xmas holiday with a lot of books and a log fire.
Cannot say enough good things about this place and the staff.
Some rooms have a sea view and are well worth splashing out for, ours (room 17) was very spacious with a bay window and large ensuiite.
We chose to have dinner in the bar, which had a good range of choices, plus a small range of keg/real ales.
Our food was delicious, with generous portion sizes, and well priced too. Breakfast also had a good range of choices, and again was very enjoyable. Packed lunches are available, and are good value
Service was excellent, and particularly well organised.
Menu was fairly standard. Order taken efficiently and drinks delivered by a youngish chap who was friendly. Bit of a rigmarole about taking own drinks off of the tray. Food was OK but I never expect more than good pub food at the Wreckers.
They had tried hard with CV-19 precautions and succeeded. It did, of course, mean that the atmosphere was very different. I have spent many an evening sitting there listening to locals and visitors alike but the ‘craic’ was missing this time. Did enjoy the visit from the Jack Russel that definitely was not under a table! 😄😄
In retrospect we may have been better sitting outside, enjoying the views and the sunset. If you’re down that was it is worth visiting ( it always is) but please, try and make the welcome a little warmer ( one of our party has spent 35 years in a service industry and another ran a gastro-pub) as we felt that was what was really lacking.
GREAT location, so wild , in very wild weather
Restaurant - good hearty food, well served, highly recommend. My husband recommends a good pint of ale.
Highly recommend finding your way here
We stayed for one night in the self contained cottage which was really comfortable, extremely clean and had great views. Staff were incredibly helpful right from making the booking. We ate in the Wreckers Bar in the evening. Great range of food on the menu, all our meals were tasty, plentiful and very reasonably priced.
Breakfast was also great and those departing early were given a very generous food parcel for the journey instead.
This summer has been incredibly challenging for hoteliers but Hartland Quay Hôtel are doing a fantastic job and we will definitely be back!
We stayed in the cottage with friends on a B&B basis.
We were warned by the hotel that there would be disruption due to building work taking place, as the hotel roof was being replaced.
It didn't detract from our stay as the view from the cottage was un affected.
The location is second to none. Right on the rocky coastline. We could sit in our living room watching the waves crash against the rocks below.
Great coastal walks on your doorstep.
We ate in the hotel bar each night during our stay. Really enjoyed the fish and chips.
Good selection of beers behind the bar.
Great cooked breakfast each morning, served with a smile by the management.
The only 2 criticisms are
1 The WiFi in the cottage is almost useless. The signal is only detectable in the upstairs bedroom and part of the living room, no signal atall in the downstairs rooms.
2 The 'picture' window in the cottage living room which looks out across the rocky bay was very dirty on the outside, meaning that viewing and photographs were degraded.
I know sea salt will contribute to this but it didn't look like it had been cleaned in a while. The window didn't open or I'd have happily cleaned it myself.
These are minor grumbles which in no way would put me off returning to this hotel.
It's one of a kind and if you stay once, you'll definitely return.
"The seating areas outside, and the pub can get very busy during peek times, so best to book before hand."Read full review
